Chapter 8 Selling Bags

The next morning, Yang Qingheng took the rice and flour to the neighbor's, thought for a moment, and then went back to her room to grab a handful of candy and put it in her pocket.

When Sister-in-law Sun opened the door and saw it was her, she quickly greeted her, "Qingheng, you're up so early! Come in quickly, the porridge is already cooked, you can eat it in a little while. Have a sweet potato to tide you over first."

He then turned and called out to the kitchen, "Tiger, get a sweet potato for your Aunt Qingheng."

Yang Qingheng looked up and saw a five or six-year-old boy with a chubby face, who darted out like a cat, holding a sweet potato bigger than his palm: "Here, for you."

"Yes, thank you, Tiger." Yang Qingheng said gently, reaching out to take it.

Tiger saw his mother go into the kitchen, and his face immediately changed. He made a face at her and ran inside in a flash, yelling, "You old hag!"

Yang Qingheng was stunned and almost didn't react. She laughed in anger, grabbed the sweet potato, rushed over, grabbed his collar, and lifted him up: "You brat, what did you say? Say it again!"

He's so young and already behaving badly; she'll teach him a lesson!

"Old hag, old hag! Let me go!" Yang Qingheng was just a child, and compared to Hu Zi, she was practically a giant. Just a little lesson was enough to scare her into screaming, which alerted Sister-in-law Sun inside.

Yang Qingheng put him down and explained to Sister-in-law Sun, "This kid just called me an old hag. I'll ask him who taught him that."

Children don't think like that; they just learned it from adults and are now repeating it to her.

When Tiger saw his mother arrive, he clung to her leg as if she were his savior.

Upon hearing this, Sister-in-law Sun, fearing that Yang Qingheng would suspect her, hurriedly waved her hands, saying, "This, this, I never taught her this."

The more she explained, the more confused she became. She gave Tiger's bottom a couple of hard slaps: "You brat, where did you learn such rude talk? I'll beat you to death today!"

"You, you, you! You're siding with outsiders!"

Tiger couldn't believe that his own mother was siding with Yang Qingheng, that old hag, instead of her own son. He roared in anger, but calmed down after being hit a couple of times.

He stood with his hands behind his back and refused to say a word.

Sister-in-law Sun wasn't buying it and slapped him on the head: "Stop pretending, hurry up and tell me."

Under his mother's coercion, Hu Zi revealed the reason with a humiliated face: "It was Sister Jiao Yan who said that Yang Qing Heng next door stole Brother Heng Jue and likes to abuse children."

Sister-in-law Sun's face turned ashen, and she punched Tiger twice: "You brat, you believe everything people say!" Luckily, she was there today, otherwise Yang Qingheng would have misunderstood!

Thinking of Li Jiaoyan, she was so angry that her teeth itched. This woman even used children. She was a real scoundrel. She used to think Li Jiaoyan was a good girl and even helped to match her up with Song Hengjue.

You can know a person's face but not their heart.

It was Li Jiaoyan again. Yang Qingheng pursed her lips and helplessly stopped Sister-in-law Sun: "Forget it, what does a child know? If you hit her again, you'll hurt her."

Sister-in-law Sun paused, sniffed, and suddenly shouted, "My stewed potatoes!" and rushed into the kitchen.

Seeing that Sister-in-law Sun had run away, Yang Qingheng sneered and patted Hu Zi's cheek: "You brat, you're pretty cocky!"

She really is an old hag!

Tiger's eyes widened in disbelief, unable to comprehend why the woman who had been so kind and gentle a moment ago had suddenly changed her expression.

“You… it’s wrong to bully children.” He retorted, his voice strong but his words betraying his inner weakness.

Yang Qingheng sneered, brandishing her fist at him, which startled Hu Zi. He immediately squatted down, covered his head, and tears welled up in his eyes.

"Hey, we're back to normal." Yang Qingheng felt guilty for making him cry, so she kicked Hu Zi's butt with her toe and opened her palm, revealing a few colorful fruit candies.

Tiger pouted. He was initially furious with her, but what child could resist the allure of fruit candy? He eagerly reached out his hand.

Feeling obligated to someone who pays his bills, he inexplicably found Yang Qingheng somewhat endearing.

But his mouth was glued shut, and he couldn't say anything to apologize. His face turned red, and he ran away in a flash.

Yang Qingheng chuckled and strode into the main room. Just then, Sister-in-law Sun came out carrying a bowl: "The food is ready, come and eat quickly."

Yang Qingheng responded, took the bowl, and sat down casually.

Breakfast consisted of a small dish of eggs and a plate of green vegetables. It seemed simple, but in an era where one might not even be able to eat meat once a week, it was considered the highest form of etiquette.

Yang Qingheng silently kept it in mind.

"My cooking skills aren't as good as your Hengjue's, but I can still eat a lot. You're not fully recovered yet, so eat more." Sister-in-law Sun said kindly, putting a full mouthful of eggs on Yang Qingheng's plate.

Knowing that Hu Zi was being dramatic, she didn't specifically invite him to dinner. Instead, she warmed up some porridge in the pan, planning to bring it to his room after Yang Qingheng left.

Yang Qingheng took a bite and gave a thumbs up: "Sister-in-law, you are too modest. Your cooking skills are definitely those of a master chef. No wonder you can raise Tiger to be so strong."

As Sun's sister-in-law received the praise, her smile grew wider and wider, and her guard against her lowered considerably. She began to chatter on and on about Tiger's funny stories, and from time to time, she would mention a few things that happened in the village.

"Sister-in-law, you just said you were going to town. What are you going to town for?" Yang Qingheng asked curiously.

Sister-in-law Sun sighed, "It's all because of that brat. He insisted that all the kids in his class had new schoolbags from the supply and marketing cooperative, and forced me to buy him one."

She gets angry just thinking about it. The cloth bag she used to use to carry vegetables could also be used to carry books, but this kid just wouldn't use it and insisted on buying those fancy but useless things.

Yang Qingheng's eyes flickered slightly, and she suddenly smiled and said, "Sister-in-law, I learned needlework from someone when I was in the city. I can also make schoolbags. I just bought some fabric these days, so I'll make one for Hu Zi."
