“That’s right, I can see you’re all educated. Those two old bastards used to beat Yang Qingheng every day, and now they expect her to be filial? That’s not fair.” Sister-in-law Sun rolled up Yang Qingheng’s sleeve and looked at the crisscrossing scars. Everyone couldn’t help but gasp, and their gazes toward Gao Xiao’e changed.
“Gao Xiao’e has been coming to ask for money for more than just a day or two. If you ask me, let’s just do this,” Sister Sun understood Yang Qingheng’s look and said loudly in line with her meaning, “Let them agree to break off this relationship, so that they won’t bother us every day.”
The man in the red armband stroked his chin: "That's a good idea."
Gao Xiao'e already knew about Yao Ying's hospitalization and surgery, and had long given up hope of getting the money. Sun's words undoubtedly shocked her, and she immediately stood up.
He raised his chin and said, "It's not impossible. I've raised you for so many years, and I deserve credit for my hard work. I'll give you at least a thousand."
"A thousand?" Sister-in-law Sun spat in her face. "Why don't you just rob someone? You already took a lot of the bride price before, not to mention Qingheng is in a difficult situation now."
Yang Qingheng nodded: "Three hundred at most, no more."
Gao Xiao'e cursed loudly, "'You little slut, you're really dreaming...'"
"Shut up. If you don't want things to stay this way, then the relationship is over." The woman in red armbands said coldly.
Upon hearing that she wouldn't get a single penny, Gao Xiao'e panicked: "How about five hundred?"
Under the cold stares of the others, he gritted his teeth and reluctantly agreed, "Three hundred it is."
The letter severing ties was quickly written and everyone witnessed it.
Gao Xiao'e stretched out her hand: "Hurry up and look, give me the money!"
Yang Qingheng was in a dilemma and pleaded with everyone: "As you all know, my family really has no money left. Could I borrow some money from you first? I will pay you back when the village distributes money at the end of the year."
Upon hearing that they needed to borrow money, everyone took a step back and avoided eye contact. Only a few people reluctantly pulled out a few dollars.
Everyone knows that Yao Ying is the only one in their family earning work points now, and they can barely afford to eat. If they lend her the money, it's gone forever.
Yang Qingheng lowered her eyes in disappointment, then smiled at Sister-in-law Sun: "Sister-in-law, we're the closest of friends. If they're unwilling to lend it, you can't be unwilling to lend it either, can you?"
At first glance, it sounded like moral blackmail, and everyone frowned, expressing their dissatisfaction with Yang Qingheng's shameless behavior.
Only Sister-in-law Sun understood what she meant.
Yang Qingheng has been buying good things to nourish Yao Ying's body and performing surgery for her recently. It would be too abnormal for her to still be able to come up with two hundred yuan now, as it would easily attract unwanted attention.
Sister-in-law Sun said with difficulty, "Qingheng, as you know, my son Huzi will be starting school next year. It's not that I'm unwilling to lend him the money, but I really can't afford it."
Yang Qingheng suddenly got angry: "Sister-in-law Sun, I've always treated you well. You don't consider me a friend. Don't you trust me?"
This attempt at moral blackmail put Sister Sun in a difficult position. In the end, she gritted her teeth and lent her two hundred yuan, repeatedly telling her to pay it back as soon as possible.
Gao Xiao'e received the money, beaming with pride, and then turned and left.
After receiving Yang Qingheng's red envelope, the man in red armbands said nothing more and left quickly, leaving a group of villagers watching the spectacle.
"Sister-in-law Sun, you're acting all high and mighty here today, lending someone two hundred yuan. If your Xingnong finds out, he'll beat you to death when he gets back!" someone said, gloating and deliberately trying to scare her.
"Given Song Hengjue's family situation, I'm afraid you won't be able to get this money back."
...
They were all people who loved watching the drama unfold. They talked a lot, but when they saw that Sister-in-law Sun wasn't paying attention to them, they got bored and went home in twos and threes.
I'm so glad I didn't get too close to Yang Qingheng back then, otherwise they would be the ones being begged by Yang Qingheng to lend them money today.
Listening to their words, Sister-in-law Sun felt no panic at all; instead, she wanted to laugh.
They had no idea how much money she was making with Yang Qingheng. Let alone two hundred, she wouldn't even blink if asked to lend Yang Qingheng five hundred now.
Yang Qingheng closed the courtyard gate and led Sister-in-law Sun inside: "This money can be deducted directly from next month's profits."
Sister-in-law Sun nodded.
Yang Qingheng always felt that the house was vulnerable to thieves since no one was home, so she asked her sister-in-law Sun to take an iron shovel and bury the remaining antiques under the bed in the yard. She packed a few sets of clothes, took some cash, and hurriedly headed to the hospital.
Yang Qingheng pushed open the ward door, her gaze sweeping over Song Hengjue's face before landing on Yao Ying with a natural smile: "Mom, how are you feeling today? Are you feeling any better?"
“Okay, okay, of course it is,” Yao Ying patted the bedside enthusiastically. “You haven’t eaten yet, have you? Hengjue borrowed the kitchen to cook today, come and eat quickly.”
He stuffed the vegetables into her hands like a precious treasure.
When Yang Qing heard that it was made by Song Hengjue, she was reluctant to accept it, but seeing the old lady's expectant eyes, she forced a smile and reluctantly took it.
After a busy afternoon, I was really hungry, so I didn't care about anything else and opened my lunchbox.
The tender, orange-red meat gleamed enticingly, and its rich aroma instantly filled the entire ward, causing the family member in the next bed to unconsciously swallow and their eyes to drift in their direction.
Song Hengjue's cooking skills are really good.
Yang Qingheng raised an eyebrow, picked up her chopsticks, and was about to put them in her mouth when she suddenly paused, as if remembering something. "Mom, what kind of dish is this?"
"Braised rabbit, have you forgotten?" Yao Ying's eyes were full of smiles. "When you first married into our family, you didn't like our food. Later, Hengjue specially went to the mountains to get a rabbit and made this dish for you. You ate two bowls of rice back then. Have you forgotten?"
