Chapter 25 Gu Xixi takes the blame
Gu Nan also woke up and sat on the bed, looking around blankly. His eyes had triple eyelids and he looked a little silly and cute.
"Did you wet the bed?" Yu Hui walked forward and saw a large wet area in front of where Gu Xi was kneeling. She realized something was wrong and turned to look at Gu Dong.
The latter looked out the window guiltily, his red ears revealing himself.
Yu Hui smiled, looked at the guilty and pitiful Gu Xixi and asked, "I remember you slept inside last night, why did you pee outside?"
Gu Xixi: "Brother said I rolled outside after falling asleep, and I was outside when I woke up."
Gu Xixi had no doubt at all that she wet the bed.
"Oh—" Yu Hui drew out the word, "Then you rolled quite far."
Gu Xixi scratched his head embarrassedly. His eldest brother and second brother both said that he had irregular sleeping habits. He would roll around when he fell asleep. He would wake up in a different position every morning and even woke up under the bed.
"It's okay, let's wash the quilt with mom today." Yu Hui didn't intend to expose Gu Dong, as a way of saving some face for his elder brother.
Gu Xixi quickly agreed. It was great that his mother was not angry after that. In the past, when he wet the bed, his mother would be very angry and make him stand in his wet pants as punishment. His father would change the wet pants when he came back.
"You're awake now. Are you dizzy?" Yu Hui reached out and touched Gu Nan's forehead, who still had a silly look on his face. His forehead was not hot, and he didn't have a fever.
Gu Nan shook his head.
"I'm glad you're not dizzy. I'll take you to change the medicine after breakfast."
"I'm going to make breakfast. Gu Dong, you take your brothers to get up and wash up."
Gu Dong rarely said "hmm".
Yu Hui cooked a pot of sweet potato porridge. When the porridge was almost done, she put the steamer in the pot and put the buns on it to steam.
Beibei woke up just as the buns were steamed.
Yu Hui went into the bedroom, changed her diaper, put on her clothes, wiped her face and hands with a wet towel, and put her in the cradle, leaving Gu Dong, who had already washed up, to look after her.
Before finishing breakfast, Yu Lixin was already waiting for Gu Dong at the gate of the courtyard. Yu Jianshe had to be on duty in the morning and had already left.
Gu Dong finished his porridge in two gulps, picked up his schoolbag, took a bun and was about to leave.
"Wait." Yu Hui stopped him. "Get a bun for your brother Lixin too."
After hearing this, Gu Dong went back and took a bun. Yu Lixin, who was at the gate, heard it and said with a smile, "Thank you, Aunt Yu."
"Here, Brother Lixin." Gu Dong gave the hot buns to Yu Lixin, and the two brothers went to school happily.
Gu Dong had already eaten three buns and drank two bowls of porridge. His stomach was full now, but he still wanted to eat more buns. Just as he was about to take a bite, Yu Lixin stopped him.
"Don't eat yet."
"Why?" Gu Dong blinked in confusion.
"I'll eat it when I meet Zhou Dabao."
Gu Dong understood immediately and nodded vigorously.
Zhou Dabao is the grandson of Chef Zhou from the military district cafeteria. He is very annoying. He likes to bring a different breakfast every day. When he meets them on the road, he eats it in front of them and pretends that the food tastes especially good to make them jealous.
Children like Yu Lixin and Gu Dong's age were hungry, and since breakfast wasn't a big deal at home, their early-morning meals were mostly porridge and pickles. Sometimes, they'd just go to the cafeteria and get some steamed buns, dumplings, and fried dough sticks.
They also feel uncomfortable being tempted by Zhou Dabao's meat patties, meat buns, fried dough sticks and fried cakes every day.
Today they got some delicious meat buns and wanted to tempt Zhou Dabao too.
As soon as they walked out of the yard, they met Zhou Dabao, who was also holding a round bun. Behind him were several children who were close to him.
When Zhou Dabao saw the steamed buns in Yu Lixin and Gu Dong's hands, he said, "Yu Lixin, Gu Dong, you guys also eat steamed buns in the morning."
"Yeah." Yu Lixin raised his chin. "Gu Dong's mom made this. It's super delicious."
Zhou Dabao laughed, "Gu Dong, doesn't your stepmother even give you meat to eat? How could she possibly make dumplings for you?"
"No, Gu Dong's stepmother is very nice. They were eating meat all day yesterday."
"Scallion pancakes with meat filling in the morning, braised pork at noon, and steamed buns with pork and scallion filling in the evening." He ate scallion pancakes and steamed buns with pork and scallion filling, but didn't eat the braised pork. Yu Lixin felt a little regretful.
"Really?" asked a child behind Zhou Dabao.
"Yeah." Gu Dong nodded coldly.
It's not that he is deliberately being aloof, it's that he doesn't want to admit it, but he has to admit it, so he seems a little aloof.
"My family can't eat meat this many times in half a month."
"It's the same in my family." The two children who spoke looked at Gu Dong with envy.
They are all children of canteen staff, and their family conditions are slightly worse.
Zhou Dabao glared at his two friends unhappily. He never allowed anyone to surpass him in eating. After all, his grandfather was the head chef in the military canteen.
"The buns made by your stepmother are definitely not as delicious as the ones made by my grandfather." Zhou Dabao took a bite of the bun in his hand, and the sauce-colored meat filling was revealed. The aroma of meat wafted out, causing the children following behind him to swallow their saliva.
"Hmm, it smells so good." Zhou Dabao closed his eyes with a look of enjoyment.
Yu Lixin and Gu Dong smiled at each other, took a big bite of the bun, and the more fragrant meat filling wafted out.
"Look at how much meat filling there is in my bun and how thin the skin is. Look at yours, there is just a little meat... My bun tastes better than yours." Yu Lixin pointed at the bun filling and showed it to Zhou Dabao.
Zhou Dabao took a look and found that the meat filling was indeed more than that in his own buns, and the smell was also very tempting, more fragrant than the buns in his hand.
"More meat filling doesn't mean it tastes better, right?" Zhou Dabao said, and when no one responded, he turned around and saw several friends behind him staring at the buns in Gu Dong and Yu Lixin's hands.
"Mr. Gu's buns are really better than the ones your grandfather makes." Wu Chao came over with a few children of the same age.
"Great! I was wondering whose house was steaming buns yesterday. The aroma kept me craving them the whole afternoon. Turns out it's yours, Gu Dong."
"I've been craving it all afternoon. This morning, I asked my mom for money to get some from the cafeteria. It tasted nothing like what I smelled. It tasted just like the buns in Gu Dong's hand."
"Hehe..." Wu Chao laughed proudly, "You guys have been craving them all afternoon and haven't had any to eat. I ate eight of them last night and nearly burst my stomach. They were so delicious."
"How did you get it?" A boy next to Wu Chao asked, hooking his neck.
"My mother gave two milk powder coupons to Gu Dong's stepmother, so she sent some buns to express her gratitude. Gu Dong, your stepmother's cooking skills are really amazing." Wu Chao gave a thumbs up when he said this.
"Impossible." Zhou Dabao stiffened his neck. "No one can make buns better than my grandfather's."
His grandfather's cooking skills are the best in the world. No matter who in this courtyard is having a wedding or entertaining relatives and friends, they have to be polite, give a box of good cigarettes, and ask his grandfather to help cook a table. If it is a happy occasion, they have to give a big red envelope.
