Chapter 280 Drooling with Envy
The next morning, Gu Dong told his mother what dishes he wanted to eat for his birthday.
Yu Hui assured him that these dishes would definitely be at tomorrow's birthday party.
In the blink of an eye, it was Gu Dong's birthday. He put on a new cotton-padded jacket and new shoes, and used a comb dipped in water to comb his messy hair into a more tidy shape.
Gu Huai also had a day off today. After breakfast, he rode his bicycle and took Yu Hui to the market to buy vegetables.
"Live shrimps, live shrimps, fresh big live shrimps." Yu Hui heard the shouting as soon as she entered the market.
Large live shrimps are relatively rare in the market, so Yu Hui naturally couldn't miss it. She followed the shouting and walked to the shrimp stall, while Gu Huai followed behind, pushing his bicycle.
Live shrimps are rare, and there were quite a few people gathered in front of the stall, but most of them were looking and few were buying.
"One yuan per pound, this is too expensive."
"That's right, you can buy two kilograms of lean pork."
The stall owners, two young men, didn't get angry when they heard everyone talking. Instead, they smiled and explained, "These large live shrimp are rare. Our team has been raising them for two years to get this many, and the investment is high, so they're more expensive."
“It’s still too expensive.”
"That's right, if you want less, I can take a pound."
"Yeah, less?"
The stall owner waved his hands in embarrassment, saying, "It really can't be less. Before we came here, the village chief gave a strict order: at least one yuan per pound, not a cent less."
Yu Hui didn't say anything. She squatted on the ground, picked up the shrimp and looked at it. The shrimp was very lively and quite big. If it was made into dry pot spicy shrimp, it would definitely taste good.
"Sister, would you like two pounds?" The young man greeted Yu Hui as he saw her picking up the shrimps.
Yu Hui stood up and said, "I don't have anything to put the shrimp in. I'll ask my husband to go back and get a bucket, and then I'll buy some."
The young man smiled and said okay.
These shrimps are eaten fresh. If they are out of water, they will die soon. Yu Hui wants the shrimps to be alive.
"Ride your bike back and bring a bucket. I'll go buy other vegetables first." Yu Hui turned her head and spoke to Gu Huai, but saw that the corners of his mouth were raised, and he looked very happy.
I don’t know what you are so happy about?
"Okay." Gu Huai nodded with a smile.
Xiaohui just said "my man." Yes, he is Xiaohui's man!
Gu Huai rode his bike back to get the bucket, and Yu Hui went to the pork stall and bought two pounds of pork tenderloin, five pounds of spare ribs, and three pounds of pork belly.
The tenderloin is made into sweet and sour pork tenderloin, the ribs are used to make sweet and sour ribs and stew soup, and the pork belly is used to make crispy meat.
Fried crispy pork requires pork belly with both fat and lean meat, which tastes better after frying.
Yu Hui also bought a big rooster, planning to make a chicken pot. She was standing in front of the chicken stall, watching someone slaughter a chicken, when Gu Huai came pushing his bicycle and carrying a bucket.
"I didn't find you in front of the pork stall, so I guess you are here." Gu Huai walked forward with a smile, took the meat from Yu Hui's hand, and put it into the basket in front of the bicycle.
Yu Hui chatted with Gu Huai for a while, and then the chicken was killed. Gu Huai tied the chicken's feet with straw ropes and hung it on the handlebars.
The two returned to the shrimp stall, and Yu Hui chose four and a half pounds of shrimp, spending four dollars and fifty cents.
Then the two of them went to buy a big grass carp. How could they celebrate their birthday without fish?
For vegetarian dishes, I bought eggplant, tomato, cabbage, potato, lotus root and winter melon.
After returning home and resting for a while, Yu Hui, Gu Huai and Gu Hongmei went into the kitchen to prepare food.
Gu Dong wanted to help in the kitchen, but Yu Hui asked him to leave. "It's your birthday today. You're the oldest, how can you do any work? Go watch TV with your younger siblings."
Although he couldn't help, Gu Dong still went out happily.
"Where are you going now?" Wu Tingting walked downstairs with a book and saw her younger brother Wu Chao standing in front of the mirror, using his father's hair wax to part his hair into a 3:7 ratio.
Wu Chao turned around, raised his chin proudly and said, "It's Gu Dong's birthday today, and he invited me to celebrate his birthday. I want to go to his house and eat delicious food."
"Gu Dong said that today we have fried crispy pork, sweet and sour spare ribs, and sweet and sour pork."
Wu Tingting looked at her brother with envy. Why doesn’t Gu Dong have a biological sister?
She wanted to play with her cousin Gu Dong, but before she could even start, she went to join the army.
"What is sweet and sour pork?" It was the first time she heard of this dish.
Wu Chao thought for a moment and said, "Gu Dong said it's a northern dish, sour and sweet, crispy on the outside and tender meat on the inside."
Wu Tingting was even more envious, because her favorite dishes were sour and sweet.
"Okay, I won't talk to you anymore. I have to go to Gu Dong's house. Gu Dong asked us to go there early so we can watch TV together."
After saying that, Wu Chao skipped out of the house, leaving his sister Wu Tingting drooling with envy at home.
As soon as he went out, Wu Chao met Zhao Jialin.
The two brothers walked towards Gu's house arm in arm, asking each other what gift they had prepared for Gu Dong.
Zhao Jialin pulled out a book from his arms. "Composition Collection. Didn't Gu Dong say he wasn't good at writing? This composition collection will be very helpful for him."
This book was bought for him by his aunt from Beijing and sent back to him. He had read it many times. He had no brothers or sisters at home to inherit it, so he simply gave it to Gu Dong as a gift.
"What are you preparing?" Zhao Jialin asked Wu Chao.
Wu Chao smiled mysteriously and pulled out a harmonica from his pocket.
Zhao Jialin was very surprised and said, "Isn't this the harmonica that you asked Aunt Li to buy you when you were eight years old after you threw a tantrum at the state-owned store?"
"What do you mean by throwing a tantrum? When did I ever throw a tantrum?" Wu Chao blushed when he mentioned the past that he did not want to recall, and he denied it flatly.
Zhao Jialin laughed, "Okay, okay, you didn't. The person who threw a tantrum in the state-owned store and won the attention of half the store's people was not you, Wu Chao."
Wu Chao clenched his fist and hit him.
Zhao Jialin smiled and dodged, "This harmonica costs several dollars, and you are willing to give it to Gu Dong. Don't you like it very much?"
Wu Chao bared his teeth. "What's the point of liking it? I have no musical talent and I can never learn to play the harmonica. Instead of leaving it at home gathering dust, I might as well give it to Gu Dong. It will also make me look very generous."
No matter what, this harmonica is a valuable item. If I give it to Gu Dong, he will definitely think of him whenever Aunt Yu makes something delicious in the future.
Zhao Jialin raised his eyebrows and said nothing.
The two arrived at the door of Gu's house, and before entering the yard, Wu Chao called Gu Dong's name.
Gu Dong came out to greet them. The two well-educated people went to the kitchen to greet the adults as soon as they heard that they were in the kitchen.
"Uncle Gu, Aunt Yu, Aunt Gu."
"Come on." Yu Hui greeted as she prepared the flour for the fried crispy pork. "Come to the main room and watch TV."
"Gu Dong, don't forget to take out the candy and biscuits for your brother Chaochao and the others."
"Okay." Gu Dong responded with a smile, "Brother Chaochao, Brother Jialin, let's go watch TV. It's showing "Monkey King: Havoc in Heaven" now."
Their eyes lit up and they quickly followed Gu Dong out of the kitchen.
