Chapter 3: Discovering the Letters in the Box
Hearing a knock at the door, Zheng Jiayu, who was at home, tensed up immediately. She grabbed a kitchen knife and hid in front of the door, asking, "Who is it?"
"Gu Yunting".
Upon hearing the name, Zheng Jiayu paused for a moment, somewhat surprised.
I didn't expect them to arrive so quickly.
Looking at the kitchen knife in her hand, Zheng Jiayu quickly put it back before opening the door for Gu Yunting and the others.
Upon opening the door, they saw Gu Yunting standing there with two other people. These two men, just like Gu Yunting, were also soldiers.
Looking at Zheng Jiayu, whose long hair was half-down and who was wearing a red floral dress, Gu Yunting was taken aback at first, and then said, "I am Gu Yunting."
"Zheng Jiayu, please come in first. I'll go call Uncle Xiang and let him know you've arrived."
Gu Yunting did not stop her, and watched as Zheng Jiayu made a phone call to Captain Xiang.
Upon learning that Gu Yunting and the others had arrived, Captain Xiang hurried back from outside.
Seeing the three approaching, the captain smiled.
"It's good that you're here. I'm relieved that you took Jiayu away this time, so Li Zonglin won't keep an eye on her." These past two days, Li Zonglin has been asking him about Zheng Jiayu's situation, and even wanted Zheng Jiayu to marry Li Jian.
In short, the idea was to trap Zheng Jiayu in the Li family.
"Uncle Xiang, has the Li family not given up yet?"
Captain Xiang's expression immediately turned serious: "Give up? How could they give up? After all, they haven't gotten what your parents left behind yet. They won't just give up like that."
Listening to their conversation, Gu Yunting asked, "What exactly did they leave behind that made these people so willing to do anything to kill Jia Yu's mother?"
Zheng Jiayu glanced at Gu Yunting; this guy was quite outgoing.
"I don't know much about this. My parents never told me, but Uncle Xiang said he heard my parents mention it. It must be a very powerful weapon, but he doesn't know exactly what it is," Zheng Jiayu said, frowning and shaking her head, looking somewhat confused.
Gu Yunting was somewhat baffled by their complete lack of knowledge.
If Zheng Jiayu's parents really left nothing behind, this would be a significant matter for them.
"Is there anything special about what your parents left you?"
Zheng Jiayu had never actually looked at the things her parents left behind.
After getting up and returning to her room at the Xiang family's house, Zheng Jiayu took out a wooden box from the room.
He placed it on the table and looked at everyone, saying, "These are the things my parents left me, but I'm not really sure what's inside. I haven't looked at them carefully yet."
As she spoke, Zheng Jiayu opened the wooden box.
Inside was a bankbook, a stack of money, some receipts, her marriage certificate, and engagement gifts from the Gu family.
These things don't look particularly special.
Zheng Jiayu took everything out of the box.
When Zheng Jiayu took the item out, Gu Yunting noticed something was off about the box.
He quickly picked up the box and examined it carefully.
Is there something wrong with this box?
Gu Yunting did not answer Zheng Jiayu's question, but looked at the box seriously and opened the box under everyone's gaze.
There is also a hidden compartment at the bottom of the box.
There were several letters in this compartment.
Zheng Jiayu was stunned when she saw the letters and stared blankly at Gu Yunting.
How exactly did he discover it?
Gu Yunting handed the letter to Zheng Jiayu: "Take a look and see if there are any clues in this."
Zheng Jiayu didn't stand on ceremony and opened the letter to read it carefully.
The more Zheng Jiayu looked, the more she felt something was wrong.
The letter only describes some daily events, but these events seem to be arranged in a specific order.
A recent letter even had many numbers written on the back.
Moreover, these numbers are all random and have no discernible pattern.
Captain Xiang and the others also saw the contents of the letter. Captain Xiang looked at Zheng Jiayu in front of him and asked, "Jiayu, are you familiar with these numbers?"
“There’s no pattern to it, and I think there’s something wrong with the content of the letters.” Although that’s what she thought, Zheng Jiayu couldn’t quite put her finger on what the problem was.
In short, it's all about intuition.
“We can’t figure out what’s written in these right now. Take them to Gu Yunting and take your time to look at them. Maybe you’ll find out what your parents are trying to tell you.” That’s what Captain Xiang wanted to say.
There must be someone who can decipher what they left behind, and that person can only be Zheng Jiayu.
Zheng Jiayu carefully put the letters back in order and put them away: "Uncle Xiang, don't worry, I will definitely call you if I have any news."
Captain Xiang quickly waved his hand at this, saying, "No, Jiayu, you can't tell us. Once you tell us, many things will change."
"If someone targets me here or something, you'll be in danger." It's not safe here, and he absolutely cannot let Zheng Jiayu come here to die.
Before Zheng Jiayu could say anything more, Gu Yunting spoke up: "Captain Xiang is right. This place is no longer safe. There is a risk of the message being leaked at any time. You will only have a chance if you capture all the traitors here."
Although Zheng Jiayu was unwilling, she knew that Gu Yunting was right.
If this place is indeed unsafe, then Li Zonglin's family is definitely in trouble.
"Captain Xiang, we're leaving tomorrow." Gu Yunting looked at Captain Xiang and told him that they would be leaving soon.
Captain Xiang was not surprised by their early departure: "Good, leave quickly and don't linger."
The sooner Zheng Jiayu leaves, the sooner her safety will be guaranteed.
Captain Xiang patted Zheng Jiayu on the shoulder: "Jiayu, be careful when you get to the north. Don't trust anyone except Gu Yunting and the others."
"Uncle Xiang, don't worry, I've got it."
Captain Xiang had some things to attend to, so he left first. After the others left, Gu Yunting told his friend to go to the guesthouse to rest, as he still had things to say to Zheng Jiayu.
After everyone left, Gu Yunting looked at Zheng Jiayu and said, "There's someone over there who keeps bothering me, so I hope you can take care of him when you go back."
Zheng Jiayu was stunned. This person was really straightforward; he could say such things directly.
"You really dislike that person?"
"They kept harassing me and even threatened me with my family members."
Upon hearing Gu Yunting's words, Zheng Jiayu immediately understood just how much Gu Yunting disliked this person.
"No problem, leave this to me."
Gu Yunting nodded in satisfaction.
The thought of getting rid of that person once he went back made Gu Yunting feel better.
