Chapter 137 Jiang Zhizhi Cannot Live
Jiang Zhizhi turned around in confusion and followed Tian Aiqin home.
She was secretly wondering what was going on. The man she had just met looked a bit older, and although he was thin, he had a commanding presence. Before she turned around, he had indeed been staring at them.
Yet, I didn't sense any malicious gaze.
Who could it be?
Tian Aiqin was quick and efficient at cooking, but insisted that Jiang Zhizhi's arm injury hadn't fully healed and that she should just be the one tending the fire.
I stewed pork ribs, and also stir-fried pork belly, cabbage, and glass noodles, making a big pot of it.
I made a thick stack of scallion pancakes.
While making pancakes, Tian Aiqin said to Jiang Zhizhi, "In the past, when Zhou Xiye and his team went on missions, they weren't the kind that left immediately. Old Li would ask me to make scallion pancakes. A group of young men in their early twenties would gather around the pan, and I couldn't make enough for them to eat."
"Zhou Xiye has always been the most composed among these kids. I didn't know he came from a compound before, but I thought he had a good temperament."
He rambled on and on, mostly praising Zhou Xiye.
It was two hours later when the two of them brought the food to the hospital.
Li Zhuo is in Zhou Xiye's hospital room.
Jiang Zhizhi was a little surprised: "Why didn't Shang Xingzhou come?"
Li Zhuo shook his head: "You left not long ago, and his father came to pick him up."
Jiang Zhizhi asked in surprise, "They picked you up? Didn't they even say goodbye?"
Li Zhuo was also quite surprised: "His father came with his secretary, saying he was in a hurry and left in a rush. Shang Xingzhou said he wanted to say goodbye to you, but his father said there wasn't enough time and asked him to leave a message for me, which I would then pass on."
Since Shang Shiyi held a high position and wielded great power, Li Zhuo dared not say much. He watched them rush in and then hurriedly leave with Shang Xingzhou.
Jiang Zhizhi thought about it and it made sense. After all, Shang Xingzhou's father was a leader, so there was no need to waste time on people like them.
Li Zhuo then relayed Shang Xingzhou's message: "Shang Xingzhou said that if you have the chance to go to Shanghai in the future, be sure to look him up, and he even left an address."
He then handed the note left by Shang Xingzhou to Jiang Zhizhi.
Jiang Zhizhi glanced at the note, appearing nonchalant, but she was actually a little sad inside.
She had never had any siblings before, and suddenly a little tail followed her around calling her "sister" every day. She had gotten used to it these past few days, but then the little tail left.
Seeing Jiang Zhizhi's low spirits, Zhou Xiye sat up straight and said, "Let's eat first. I'll go back to Beijing after I'm discharged from the hospital to pack my things. Beijing is not far from Shanghai. We can go and visit it when we have time."
Jiang Zhizhi's attention was instantly diverted: "You can be discharged from the hospital? You're going to Beijing so soon, but what about your leg?"
Think about it, when we came here, we took a train for dozens of hours. Zhou Xiye's leg was still in the recovery period. If he had taken a train for dozens of hours, wouldn't the wound have festered?
Li Zhuo smiled and said, "Sister-in-law, don't worry, you'll be going back by plane, it'll be quick."
Jiang Zhizhi became interested again, as she had never been on an airplane from this era before.
Moreover, in this era, ordinary people can't even get a flight, except for national leaders and those on special missions.
So, is Zhou Xiye rushing back for some special mission?
...
Bian Yucheng secretly observed Jiang Zhizhi several times and became increasingly certain that Jiang Zhizhi was Bian Suxi's daughter.
I just don't know why Jiang Zhizhi ended up being raised by the Jiang family.
Knowing that Jiang Zhenhua was being sent down to the countryside nearby, they found out his address and went there.
Jiang Zhenhua had no contact with the Bian family, nor did they have any professional interaction; he had heard of them but never met them.
The Bian family has an adopted daughter. I once heard a colleague gossip that Bian Yucheng's grandfather was once a long-term worker for the Bian family. He didn't even have a surname at first, but eventually he took the surname Bian from his master and was named Bian Zhiwu.
The Bian family's businesses were very large back then, with countless docks and yarn factories.
However, the Bian family had few descendants to begin with, and in the end, only one daughter, Bian Suxi, survived. During the War of Resistance against Japan, the Bian family donated most of their assets to support the war effort.
Bian Suxi was sent abroad at the age of ten and returned to China at the age of fifteen. Not long after her return, her parents died in an accident.
Before his death, Bian's father entrusted his daughter to Bian Zhiwu in his household, asking him to raise her.
Later, for reasons unknown, Bian Suxi died in a fire, and the Bian family completely fell into the hands of Bian Zhiwu.
Every time the topic was discussed, someone would say that the old couple from the Bian family died under mysterious circumstances, and how could a poor fifteen-year-old orphan girl possibly keep such a vast fortune?
Jiang Zhenhua listened without offering any opinions.
Now Bian Yucheng came to his door and showed him a photo of Bian Suxi, who does look a lot like Zhizhi.
Somewhat confused about Bian Yucheng's purpose in coming: "You've come to reunite with your relatives?"
Bian Yucheng hesitated for a moment: "Uncle Jiang, after my aunt died, our whole family was very sad. I was old enough to remember things at that time. My aunt was very good to us children. If we can find her and her daughter, our family can be reunited. That is my grandfather's greatest wish."
Jiang Zhenhua squinted at Bian Yucheng: "Looking alike doesn't necessarily mean it's true. Our children were switched at birth, and Zhizhi's biological parents have been found. Therefore, Zhizhi is not your aunt's child."
Bian Yucheng frowned: "How could that be? When I see Zhizhi, I feel a strange sense of familiarity, as if I'm seeing my aunt when she was young."
Jiang Zhenhua said with regret, "Zhizhi's biological parents are both gone now, so there's no way to give you the answer. Besides, you already published a statement in the newspaper that your aunt had died in the fire. How come you published it in the newspaper when no body was found?"
Bian Yucheng paused for a moment: "At the time, three bodies were left at the scene, all of them charred. We judged from their body shape that they were my aunt."
Jiang Zhenhua frowned: "That shouldn't be the case. I remember your fourth uncle is a forensic doctor, quite famous in Beijing. Didn't you guys do any forensic examination?"
Bian Yucheng awkwardly evaded the question: "I was young at the time, and I don't remember the specifics. All we hope for now is that my aunt is still alive."
Jiang Zhenhua picked up the teacup, lowered his eyes, blew on the tea leaves, and took a small sip.
He didn't know Bian Yucheng's purpose in coming, but it was definitely not what he said—that he wanted to find his aunt and her daughter so that the family could be reunited.
He saw human nature all too clearly at his age.
Even if Zhizhi is Bian Suxi's daughter, we can't acknowledge her now, given the current climate.
Seeing that Jiang Zhenhua was no longer speaking, Bian Yucheng sat awkwardly for a while before getting up and saying, "Uncle Jiang, I'll go back now. If you have any clues about my aunt, please let me know."
Jiang Zhenhua stood up and said, "Of course I will. I also want your family to be reunited."
Watching Bian Yucheng walk away, Jiang Zhenhua returned to his room. Fortunately, Song Wanying wasn't there today, and the fewer people who knew about this, the better.
However, just in case, Jiang Zhenhua decided to take a couple of days off to visit Zhou Xiye.
Bian Yucheng clearly had ulterior motives; Zhou Xiye needed to be prepared.
Just as she was making plans, Song Wanying returned from outside, carrying a large bag of things, her face full of surprise: "Someone asked me for directions just now, and then gave me this big bag of things as a thank you gift, all of them are high-end nutritional supplements."
