Chapter 52 Spoil Your Own Wife
Zhang Zhao managed to fix the car with some effort, and it was already past noon when he got to the city.
Zhou Xiye glanced at his watch and asked Jiang Zhizhi for her opinion: "It's past noon. Shall we go eat first, and then I'll take you to the guesthouse?"
Just as Jiang Zhizhi was about to say no, Zhang Zhao interrupted, "Technician Jiang, we're hungry too. If we take you there to eat, it'll be an hour later. Since we're going to eat anyway, let's eat together. I'm treating you to today's meal."
Jiang Zhizhi didn't know exactly how big Ganbei City was, or how far it was from where they were to Huacheng Hotel. She couldn't let the three of them go hungry with her, so she nodded and said, "Okay, but let me treat you to a meal."
Zhang Zhao laughed without saying anything; in short, they wouldn't let a female comrade treat them to a meal.
Zhou Xiye and his group were very familiar with the city. They walked through two alleys and parked their car in front of a state-run canteen.
It was lunchtime, and the restaurant was packed with people eating.
The meals were simple, including steamed buns, noodles, and two simple stir-fries. The steamed buns had two fillings: pork and scallions, and vegetarian cabbage and glass noodles. The noodles were tomato and egg noodles with a gravy.
While Jiang Zhizhi was still looking at the price list, Zhou Xiye had already asked the waiter to order.
We ordered two stir-fried dishes, ten steamed buns, and four bowls of noodles.
There are many people, so we have to share tables.
We finally found a spot in the corner, and the four of us squeezed in to sit down.
Jiang Zhizhi sat next to Zhou Xiye, watching the lively crowd around her. Most of them were sitting there slurping down a small bowl of noodles. She glanced at it and saw that although it was called tomato and egg noodles, there was only a tiny bit of egg in it.
But that didn't stop everyone from having a very happy and satisfying meal.
I sighed inwardly once again, thinking how content and happy people are these days!
Zhou Xiye got up and went out for a while. He came back after a while with three bottles of soda. He gave one bottle to Zhang Zhao and the young soldier, and placed the last bottle in front of Jiang Zhizhi: "There are a lot of people, and the food will take a while. Drink some soda to fill your stomach first."
Jiang Zhizhi stared at the orange-yellow soda in the glass bottle with some surprise; she had thought that such a thing didn't exist in this era!
She turned her head and looked at Zhou Xiye with a smile: "Thank you, Captain Zhou."
I picked it up and took a sip. The orange flavor was very strong, sweet and slightly bubbly. It tasted so much better than the orange juice I drank later!
Satisfied, her eyes crinkled with a smile as she turned to look at Zhou Xiye: "It tastes pretty good."
Zhou Xiye lowered his eyes, and his expression seemed much gentler: "Drink less first, we still have to eat later."
Zhang Zhao almost couldn't swallow the soda in his mouth. How many times had his boss gone out? He had never drunk soda before. These were things for girls, and they, as grown men, didn't like them either.
Today, the boss bought a bottle of soda for Technician Jiang, and also bought one for both of them!
Something's not right, something's very wrong!
The boss's attitude towards Jiang Zhizhi is very strange!
He was filled with gossip he wanted to share, but when he turned to look at the oblivious young soldier beside him, who was happily drinking soda, he sighed inwardly, realizing he had no one to share it with.
When the food was served, Zhang Zhao pushed a plate of steamed buns directly in front of Jiang Zhizhi: "I remember you really like steamed buns, you can eat five at a time, right? These are better than the ones at the train station, you should try them."
Jiang Zhizhi paused, her hand about to grab the steamed bun. Zhang Zhao actually remembered that she had eaten steamed buns at the Beijing train station?
Did they all see her eat five steamed buns in one go?
Her earlobes turned red; how could she possibly eat like that?
Zhou Xiye gave Zhang Zhao a sharp look: "Hurry up and eat."
Fortunately, Jiang Zhizhi had a strong mentality. She was only embarrassed for a moment, and then calmly continued eating. After all, eating is the most important thing in the world.
...
After the meal, Zhou Xiye and the others first took Jiang Zhizhi to the Huacheng Hotel.
Jiang Zhizhi entered the hall, and Dong Xinguo and the commune's technicians had just arrived.
Dong Xinguo said apologetically, "We came here early this morning and had a meeting in the city first, so we didn't ask you to come with us. We can go back together."
Jiang Zhizhi didn't care about that: "It's okay, I just happened to get a ride here, it's very convenient."
Dong Xinguo smiled and said, "That's good. Let's stay at this hotel for today and go to the workshop first thing tomorrow morning. The dormitory over there hasn't been vacated yet."
Jiang Zhizhi didn't care, as long as she had a place to stay.
After checking into the room, she went upstairs with her bag to put her things down, and when she came downstairs with the thermos to get hot water, she noticed that the woman standing in the lobby looked familiar.
Jiang Zhizhi took two steps back and was still somewhat surprised when she saw the other person's face. It was actually Song Wanying.
Wasn't Song Wanying sent to the countryside? How come she's here?
Did she see Zhou Xiye just now?
This...her disguise is about to be exposed!
Jiang Zhizhi thought for a moment and decided to greet Song Wanying, since she had treated the original owner quite well before. Just as she was about to step over, she saw Sun Xiaoyue run in from outside, hugging Song Wanying and crying, "Mom, you've finally come to see me... I missed you so much, I've been so sad for days that I couldn't eat anything..."
Song Wanying's eyes also reddened. She patted her daughter's back and said, "Don't cry. I just rushed here to see you. I have to go back right away. I've brought you the money and food coupons you asked for. Be careful this time, and don't lose them. That's all your father and I have left."
Sun Xiaoyue choked back tears: "Mom, I promise I'll keep it safe. I'm so sorry, it was all my fault. Mom, you're here now, aren't you going to see Zhizhi?"
Song Wanying hesitated for a moment, then shook her head: "Forget it, I won't watch anymore. She's already married to Zhou Xiye, so her life definitely won't be hard. I need to go back quickly; I only took half a day off."
Sun Xiaoyue held Song Wanying's arm and reluctantly saw her off at the door.
Jiang Zhizhi heard Song Wanying's words and thought, "Alright, I don't need to be presumptuous and greet her."
I carried the thermos to get hot water and went upstairs.
It was just an accident. In the morning, she saw Sun Xiaoyue and Jiang Donghua secretly doing something shameless. After lunch, she went to the city.
If she hadn't taken Zhou Xiye's car, she could have run into Sun Xiaoyue at the commune.
Just imagining the scene would be quite exciting.
After resting for a bit, I decided to go out for a stroll. Since I'm in the city now, I should see what's available so I can tell Yang Fengmei about it when I get back.
As soon as the door to the room opened, the door to the room opposite also opened, and Sun Xiaoyue walked out.
That's quite a coincidence!
Sun Xiaoyue stared at Jiang Zhizhi in shock. How could she be in the city? Thinking about it, her face darkened: "You were following me?"
Jiang Zhizhi scoffed, "Would I be crazy enough to stalk you? Anyway, I didn't want to look for you in the first place, but since we've run into each other, why don't you come to my room and we can have a chat?"
Sun Xiaoyue didn't think Jiang Zhizhi would say anything nice, but she had other plans in mind. She put on a stern face and said, "What do I have to talk to you about?"
As he spoke, he walked towards Jiang Zhizhi...
