Groups of ordinary people were beating soldiers whose bodies were broken by the weight of their responsibilities.
A large crowd of people stood nearby, glaring angrily and spewing vulgar insults. Their already thin faces looked even more ferocious.
On the side of the crowd, several elderly people and men and women shouted for them to stop, but the people wouldn't listen and continued to punch and kick the people on the ground in a fit of rage.
They were not attacked by zombies, nor were they besieged by mutated plants and animals, yet they were about to die at the hands of the survivors they were protecting.
There were both good and evil people; they didn't participate in the beating and couldn't persuade the bad guys, so they could only worry helplessly.
Those who tried to break up the fight were the ones who got beaten up. The villains were blinded by rage and attacked indiscriminately, thinking they could kill as many as they could.
The majority of the remaining neutral parties did not participate and stood at a distance. Whether they were waiting for others to be killed so they could get a share of the spoils, or fearing that the military would rise up and they would suffer, only they themselves know.
There are also some who haven't shown their faces yet; their intentions remain unknown.
