A few minutes later, a stern-faced old man, probably in his fifties, walked over, his sharp eyes sweeping back and forth between Xie Lin and Shi Shi.
"You must be Comrade Xie. My department was in a meeting just now. A major incident concerning the safety of the city has occurred and we are quite anxious as it has not yet been resolved. I apologize for keeping you both waiting."
It was a very official statement; I didn't detect any dislike in it.
Xie Lin carefully observed the other party's worried expression. With Shi Shi present, the minister's expression seemed genuine, and the small blisters at the corners of his mouth proved that he was indeed anxious and upset.
In conclusion, he is a good leader.
Xie Lin cut to the chase: "Minister Chen, I'm here for a very important matter. I'm sure you're worried about the missing soldiers in the city, right?"
Minister Chen felt a chill run down his spine and raised his hand to stop him from continuing. "Gentlemen, please come to my office."
Although the entire department was aware of the case, it was best to be cautious; what he needed most right now was a clue.
Inside the office, the two sat upright, with Shishi seemingly oblivious to her surroundings.
Chen glanced at the restless girl who was looking around, but didn't pay much attention. He gestured for Xie Lin to continue the conversation.
What he didn't know was that Shishi was looking for a hidden compartment.
Stinky Egg said that today may be good, but tomorrow may not be. The old man may be good during the day, but will he turn bad at night?
Let's keep looking. If there's a hidden compartment, maybe he's about to turn into a bad guy.
Xie Lin was unaware that his teaching had been misinterpreted by his young wife; others were taking things out of context, but she was defining them at a specific point in time.
"Minister Chen, I was sent here by my superiors to conduct a covert investigation. I have now found the missing soldier, and I have come here to ask for your help."
"Really? You really found the person?" Minister Chen was overjoyed, his voice unconsciously rising an octave, and he jumped up.
A rough-around-the-edges guy, Minister Chen didn't care about etiquette at all. He urgently asked three questions in a row, "Comrade Xie, where are they? What's their situation? Are they alive or dead?"
As he asked the question, he suppressed his racing heartbeat, afraid that the loud pounding would affect his hearing.
Xie Lin saw his joy at regaining what he had lost, but didn't keep him in suspense.
“They’re all alive, but their condition isn’t good. My brothers have medics who are treating them right now. I’ve come here for something more important.”
"Minister Chen, according to the information I have received, the border will not be peaceful tonight. I need to make an encrypted call, and you can listen in here."
Is there anything more important than finding the missing soldier?
Minister Chen's forehead throbbed; his intuition told him it wasn't good news. "Okay, the phone's over there, please use it."
Xiao Dan waited in his office all night, just so he could answer the phone in time.
When he picked up the receiver and heard Xie's voice, his hands trembled, his heart pounded, and he was terrified of hearing bad news.
"Dad, I found the myna bird and the others. They were tortured terribly and haven't eaten for days."
"Fortunately, three tigers stumbled into the secret passage and fed them, which helped them survive."
After Xie Lin finished speaking, he could clearly hear the heavy breathing that had subsided on the other end.
"By the way, Shen Yijin's mission team stumbled upon the other side's plot. During their covert investigation, they fell into their trap and four of them were captured. We encountered them when he went to find backup."
"And then we happened to run into those three tigers. We became friends after fighting, and with their guidance, we were able to successfully rescue all the soldiers."
"Okay, that's good. Thank you for your hard work on this trip, Xiao Xie."
The old father finally felt relieved. Whether it was a human or a tiger that rescued him was not important; what mattered was that everyone was safe.
With a daughter around, keeping a few tigers in check is no problem.
But the next second he realized that his little heart had gone home too early.
"Dad, there's something even more urgent. The other side is incredibly audacious. They've dug a secret tunnel under our territory to connect the two sides of the river. Myna and the others are being hidden in that tunnel and have been humiliated beneath our land. This is an immense disgrace."
"I heard some horrifying news at the other end of the secret passage: they have a major operation planned for midnight tonight, a large-scale raid on the entire border at the same time."
Minister Chen found it utterly absurd to hear that tigers were feeding humans.
Humans are the natural enemies of tigers, so how could tigers possibly help humans?
He was still in a state of doubt when the next sentence struck him like a thunderbolt, making him so angry that he felt like his head was about to burst into flames.
How dare they dig a secret tunnel that spans both sides of the strait?
What audacity! What incredible audacity!
Xiao Dan was equally furious; this was simply outrageous.
In recent years, relations between the two countries have gradually deteriorated, but neither side expected the other to do this, which shows a complete disregard for the prestige of the Dragon Kingdom.
This is blatant provocation.
Well done!
"Xiao Xie, let's put the secret passage aside for now. Is the information from later on accurate?"
“It’s absolutely true, Dad. We need to take immediate action. Please notify all the troops stationed in various locations as soon as possible.”
"Okay, Xiao Xie, I'll take care of it right away. You all need to be careful over there and take good care of the children."
Xiao Dan completely believed this earth-shattering news and immediately contacted the Beijing authorities after hanging up the phone.
Minister Chen was also stunned by the huge news, his mind buzzing.
One wave subsides, another rises.
The other party has been harassing us frequently lately, but it has only been small-scale disturbances without any major conflicts or loss of life. Apart from being a headache, everything else is fine.
If it's a large-scale attack, things will be different. The enemy is militarily strong, and if we are on the defensive, we will be at a disadvantage and suffer countless casualties.
