Chapter 106 Xia Wan Flips the Table

Xia Wan dislikes it when others talk about her, especially elderly people like Grandma Wu.

Although she knew they were all acting out of concern for her, she just couldn't stand the feeling.

Therefore, when Grandma Wu started nagging, Xia Wan quickly grabbed her arm and said in a coquettish tone:

"Third Grandma, don't worry about me! Have you forgotten how strong I am? I won't easily run into danger! And I really didn't go deep into the mountains."

Hearing Xia Wan say this, Grandma Wu was slightly relieved and patted her hand to comfort her, saying, "That's good, as long as you didn't go to the deep mountains."

"But what are you planning to do with this rabbit? Why don't you take it home and eat it with your father?" Grandma Wu asked Xia Wan with a look of doubt in her eyes.

Xia Wan sighed helplessly and replied with a troubled expression, "You should know our family's situation... If I take this rabbit home, I'm afraid my father won't even get a piece of meat. So, I'd like to ask you for a favor."

Grandma Wu frowned as she recalled the Xia family members, instantly understanding Xia Wan's intentions.

She readily agreed, "I see. You want me to cook this rabbit for you, right? No problem, this old woman will let you taste my homemade braised rabbit today!"

Xia Wan smiled slightly: "Then thank you, Third Grandma. Now that the meat is cooked, we'll each have half."

Anyway, the rabbit is fat, so she doesn't mind giving half of it away. She has meat coupons, so she can buy meat whenever she wants in the future. It's just a bit troublesome, though, as she'll have to go to the supply and marketing cooperative.

"Why are you being so polite with me, girl?" Grandma Wu patted her hand, gesturing for her to go outside and wait.

"I'll go back and tell my dad first, and I'll come back later!"

Xia Wan didn't stand on ceremony. Since she couldn't help anyway, she decided to go home first. After all, the two houses were only separated by a wall, and she could come back later.

Although the Xia family's food wasn't good, they couldn't skimp on their share of the grain, and they couldn't let the Xia family benefit from it.

When Xia Wan returned to the Xia family home, breakfast was already prepared. Looking up, she saw a simple and meager breakfast laid out on the table.

That bowl of pickled vegetables had a dull color and a salty, astringent taste.

The bowl of clear porridge in front of each person was even more unbearable to look at; there were only a handful of rice grains in it, as if it was just there to make up the numbers.

Unlike the others, Xia Yuanbao had an extra bowl of bright yellow, smooth egg custard in front of him, which made him particularly eye-catching.

The staple food was coarse cornbread, which looked unappetizing.

Seeing this, Xia Wan couldn't help but purse her lips; this meal had been wasted again!

Logically speaking, Old Man Xia and Old Woman Xia should have accumulated a lot of wealth over the years, so I don't know why the food at home is so bad.

They probably secretly hid all the good food and drinks for themselves, or left them to their beloved grandson, Xia Yuanbao.

It's a strange thing, but Old Man Xia and Old Woman Xia doted on Xia Yuanbao in every way, treating him like a precious gem.

However, they didn't show much affection for Xia Jinbao, who was also their grandson. As for Xia Wan's older brother, Xia Tao, he was more like a marginal figure.

If it weren't for the fact that he has a job that brings some income to the family, Grandma Xia and the others probably wouldn't even bother to say a kind word to him!

Since Xia Tao got a job, the Xia family has been outwardly polite and harmonious towards him.

However, when Xia Wan returned, Xia Tao wholeheartedly protected his younger sister, which made the Xia family dissatisfied.

This morning, their attitude towards Xia Tao has already changed.

In the Xia family, the way of eating is similar to that of other families in the village. The most authoritative person in the family, Old Mrs. Xia, is in charge of distributing the food to everyone.

When it was Xia Wan's turn, there wasn't a single grain of rice in her bowl, and even the cornbread was the smallest of all.

"Is this my food? I can't be full with just this much!" Xia Wan looked at Old Madam Xia with a half-smile, glancing at the steamed egg custard in front of Xia Yuanbao out of the corner of her eye.

Very good. This kid hasn't even started eating yet. This steamed egg custard is the most nutritious thing on the table, so we can't let the little rascal contaminate it!

A hint of fear flashed in Grandma Xia's eyes. She was a little afraid that Xia Wan would cause trouble again, but she was still unhappy about wasting food on Xia Wan!

She said in a slightly unsteady voice, "You... you're just a little girl, not a strong laborer in the family, you don't need to eat so much!"

Xia Wan was amused by her matter-of-fact tone. Other people's strong laborers eat more because they earn more work points, and they don't let their women and children go hungry.

The Xia family is really something else. The strong laborers just eat a lot, but they don't do much work to earn more work points. Who are they trying to impress with their arrogant attitude?

"A bunch of good-for-nothings dare to call themselves strong laborers? If that's the case, then shouldn't I, who have earned a full set of work points, be eating something better?"

As Xia Wan spoke, she took the steamed egg custard in front of Xia Yuanbao and placed it in front of herself, taking a bite in a very noticeable manner.

"Tsk tsk, this is definitely food for strong laborers, it's delicious!"

"Wah! Grandma, I want to eat steamed egg custard... Waaah..." Xia Yuanbao cried loudly as she watched the steamed egg custard in front of her being taken away!

If it were anyone else, they might have cursed back, but unfortunately this is Xia Wan, so he didn't dare to curse for fear of getting beaten up!

Xia Wan ignored the complicated looks from the crowd and ate the steamed egg custard in her bowl one bite at a time.

It wasn't that the steamed egg custard was particularly delicious; it was mainly the changes in their facial expressions that were quite interesting.
