Standing in the center of the ward, Xia Shuhua felt the anger in her heart was like volcanic lava about to erupt, hot and surging, almost breaking through the dam of reason.
Her hands trembled slightly at her sides, her fingertips turned white from the force, and her teeth clenched so tightly they made a clicking sound, yet she still struggled to suppress her anger.
She forced a smile, but it was as stiff as a frozen lake in winter, distorted and unnatural, like a cheap mask forcibly pasted onto her face.
She feigned kindness, deliberately softening her voice with a nauseatingly fake intimacy, and said to Xia Wan, "Oh dear, how can you talk like that? Your aunt is only trying to be kind, it's all for your father's sake! I was thinking that after your father is discharged from the hospital, I'll bring your whole family to live in our house first, so that it will be convenient for someone to take care of him while he recovers!"
However, the eagerness and greed deep in her eyes, like a will-o'-the-wisp flickering in the darkness, though she tried her best to conceal it, still inadvertently exposed the ugliness in her heart.
In fact, just yesterday, Xia Shuhua's mother-in-law summoned her to her side, her expression cold and her tone leaving no room for doubt.
Her mother-in-law ordered her to bring Xia Jianguo to the house they had carefully prepared in advance, and then arrange for someone to take care of Xia Jianguo's entire family.
Xia Shuhua was convinced that her "generous act" would surely earn her the other party's deepest gratitude.
She had even fantasized countless times in her mind that Xia Wan and the others would be grateful to her and respectfully call her "great benefactor".
But reality was like a resounding slap in the face, leaving her humiliated and embarrassed.
This sudden setback caused the resentment in her heart to spread rapidly throughout her entire being, like wild grass growing wildly in spring.
Xia Wan sat quietly on the edge of the bed, her gaze sharp as she stared intently at Xia Shuhua.
From the moment Xia Shuhua stepped into the ward, Xia Wan took in her every move and every smile.
Looking at Xia Shuhua's feigned attentiveness, Xia Wan couldn't help but sneer inwardly.
But on the surface, she remained calm and composed, her expression as undisturbed as a still lake, without a ripple.
Xia Wan knew very well that the seemingly kind woman in front of her was actually a heartless snake and a dangerous person.
The moment she stepped into the ward, her fake smile and shifty eyes served as a warning light, revealing her ulterior motives.
There must be some unspeakable conspiracy behind it, like a venomous snake lurking in the dark, flicking its tongue, ready to launch a fatal attack at any moment.
So, Xia Wan secretly pondered how to cleverly expose the other party's true colors and make her ugly face have nowhere to hide in front of everyone.
"Hmph, you're not up to no good, are you? Bringing up the house? You arranged this house, who knows what kind of tricks are hidden inside? We definitely wouldn't dare move in!"
Xia Wan curled her lips slightly, a disdainful smile playing on her lips, her eyes filled with contempt and wariness.
She said with a disdainful look, her gaze like a sharp sword piercing straight into Xia Shuhua, as if trying to see through her heart.
She knew all too well that she couldn't easily believe this woman's lies; perhaps at this very moment, she was racking her brains, plotting how to scheme against her family.
Perhaps that so-called house is a carefully laid trap, and once you step in, there is no way to escape.
Hearing Xia Wan's merciless words, Xia Shuhua's long-suppressed emotions erupted like a flood bursting its banks.
She could no longer maintain her previous pretense; her facial muscles contorted with anger, and she unleashed a torrent of rebukes: "You ignorant brat, don't you know any manners? Even if you don't care about your image, you're still a married woman. As the saying goes, 'A married daughter is like water spilled from a cup,' it's none of your business to meddle in her family's affairs!"
Her voice was sharp and piercing, tearing through the quiet air of the ward, like sharp daggers stabbing straight at Xia Wan, attempting to hurt her with the blade of words and make her submit.
However, faced with Xia Shuhua's scolding, Xia Wan showed no fear whatsoever, but instead became even more calm and composed.
A slight upturn of her lips revealed a faint, mocking smile.
That smile seemed to be a merciless mockery of Xia Shuhua's incompetence and exasperation.
"Oh ho ho, what you're saying is absolutely hilarious! When did it become your place to interfere in my father's affairs? Besides, aren't you a married daughter yourself? Does that give you the right to meddle in your maternal family's business? And, does Grandpa Xia know that you came to the hospital to see my father today?"
Xia Wan's words came out like a barrage of bullets, each question like a heavy hammer blow, striking Xia Shuhua's heart with great force, leaving her feeling flustered.
Xia Shuhua's face instantly darkened, and her face, which was already flushed with anger, turned even more ashen.
A fleeting, almost imperceptible look of displeasure flashed across those once calm eyes, like a black lightning bolt streaking across the night sky.
However, this fleeting emotion was quickly masked by her forced, fake smile.
She tried to salvage the situation, continuing to weave her lies: "Your aunt is doing all this for your own good. You're still a naive young girl, and it's understandable that you don't understand some things. But your father and brother need to be recognized by their ancestors. Instead of wasting time here, why don't you come back to the Xia family with me now!"
