Chapter 21 Getting on the Train

They really are a family; they all thought of the same thing and prepared almost the same things.

"Godfather and Godmother, please stop busy. I already sent everything over yesterday. If you need anything in the future, I can just buy it directly from there!"

Xia Wan felt a warmth in her heart; this was the only family she had felt warmth from since she came into this world.

Yao Jianye asked with a smile, "Have you already mailed them all?"

Xia Wan nodded and said truthfully, "Yes, there are too many people on the train, and it's inconvenient to bring luggage. I thought I'd just bring a few clothes and daily necessities to avoid the trouble of squeezing around!"

She had heard how terrifying it was to squeeze onto trains in the 1970s, so she figured it was better to travel light! Besides, the postage wouldn't make a difference!

Yao Jianye shook his head, his gaze falling on the things he had prepared, as if searching for something: "This won't do. It only takes seven days to get from Suzhou to Harbin by train, but mailing things takes ten days."

Sun Hui rummaged through a pile of things and found a quilt, handing it to Xia Wan: "Wanwan, take this quilt with you. It's not cold in Heilongjiang Province yet, this quilt is enough! I'll mail the rest of the things over!"

Xia Wan was stunned on the spot; she had indeed overlooked the delivery time of the package.

Having gotten so used to modern express delivery services, I never even considered the timeliness issue of mailing packages in this world!

Xia Wan's tendency to feel awkward struck again. She scratched her head and chuckled dryly, "Ah, I forgot about that. Luckily, my godfather and godmother reminded me!"

“You’ve never traveled far from home or mailed anything, so it’s normal that you wouldn’t think of this!” Yao Jianye shook his head and chuckled. “I have a comrade-in-arms at the Yongmao County Public Security Bureau. If you run into any trouble there, you can go to him…”

The family surrounded Xia Wan, giving her instructions for a long time, until they finished dinner before letting Yao Li take her home!

On the way back, I kept reminding her to come back and visit when she has a holiday, because this will always be her home!

Yao Li, who appears gentle and polite but is actually cheerful, kept nagging the whole way, showing how worried she was about her younger sister going to the countryside alone!

"I understand, brother, I'll write to you!" Xia Wan looked helplessly at her nagging brother.

Yao Li seemed quite dissatisfied with her writing: "Writing letters is too slow. Remember to call Mom's factory after you get off the train. Mom and Dad are very worried about you!"

"Okay, I will. You go back now, brother. I'm going upstairs first." Xia Wan pointed upstairs.

Yao Li nodded: "I'll take you up. Those two shouldn't give you any more trouble!"

"No need, no need, I can go up myself. They won't dare to bully me now..."

Xia Wan tried her best to dissuade him, and finally made him give up the idea of following along.

Zhao Jiaojiao and Qiao Erbao seemed to have resigned themselves to their fate. Their belongings had already been packed together, and when Xia Wan came back, they only glanced up at her without daring to say anything more.

For reasons unknown, Zhao Jiaojiao explained in a low voice, "I signed up to go to the countryside. Grandma and Uncle will come to pick up Erbao tomorrow to go to the countryside!"

Xia Wan glanced at her indifferently: "It has nothing to do with me. From now on, we'll go our separate ways. We might never see each other again!"

Zhao Jiaojiao: "..."

However, Xia Wan didn't care about their thoughts at all. She simply took the things she needed to bring tomorrow back to her room, washed up, and went to bed!

Before going to sleep, I checked my current points, and... they're very low, only 12 points!

The next morning, just as the sky was beginning to lighten, Xia Wan groggily got out of bed, washed her face to wake herself up, and then grabbed her luggage and headed out the door.

The train station was bustling with people, mostly former educated youth sent to the countryside and their relatives who came to see them off. They all had tears in their eyes as they said goodbye to their families.

Xia Wan was walking through the crowd when she heard someone call her name from behind.

"Wanwan, wait!"

Xia Wan turned her head and saw Sun Hui and Yao Li walking towards her through the crowd.

Sun Huishen said in surprise, "You walk pretty fast, girl! We called for ages before we finally heard you!"

"Godmother, why are you here so early, brother?" Xia Wan asked in surprise, putting her arm around her.

Yesterday she said she didn't want them to deliver it anymore, since her place wasn't far from the train station anyway.

"Mom made dumplings for you and insisted on bringing them over, afraid you'd forget to eat and go hungry!" Yao Li teased with a smile.

Sun Hui slapped him on the back: "You brat, you were worried about Wanwan too, and even prepared braised pork in advance!"

Yao Li smiled at the two of them without explaining, since there was nothing shameful about worrying about his sister!

Xia Wan was amused by them, and her eyes welled up with tears: "Thank you, godmother!"

Whether they did it for the original owner or for her own sake, they all warmed her heart!

If she hadn't wanted to see if Old Xia still existed in this world, she would have wanted to find a job and stay here. There was no way she could resist this family's cuteness.

"Why are you being so polite with us? Wanwan, you need to know that we are family. You are our only daughter. If we don't love you, who will we love?"

Sun Hui held her in her arms and said gently, "You little girl, remember to write to us often, and don't try to bear everything on your own!"

Xia Wan nodded vigorously: "Okay, don't worry, godmother, I'll come back to see you whenever I have the chance!"

"Alright, the train is about to leave, the people from the educated youth office are starting to take attendance!" Yao Li pointed inside the platform and whispered to Xia Wan, "Your biological parents didn't treat you well, remember to write back, I'll find you a job so you can go back to the city!"

"Okay, I understand! Godmother, brother, you two go back now! I'll let you know I'm safe!"

Xia Wan waved vigorously and headed to the meeting point with her luggage on her back.

Sun Hui and her companion watched her collect her rural allowance from the educated youth office and board the train before leaving.

Xia Wan boarded the train with the crowd, and the hustle and bustle made her forget the sadness of parting for a moment.

She breathed a sigh of relief after finding her seat and putting down her luggage. Trains in the 1970s were truly extraordinary!

She even witnessed someone lose their shoe in the crowd and never be able to find it again!

Xia Wan quickly took her seat and watched others squeeze onto the train!

Thankfully, she didn't have a standing ticket, otherwise she would have been squeezed like a pancake!

"Comrade, are you also a sent-down youth?"

Xia Wan was engrossed in watching when she felt someone tugging at her clothes. Turning around, she saw a girl looking at her pitifully.

Xia Wan: "???"

What's wrong? She wondered if she had started bullying anyone yet. She was exhausted from just getting on the train, and there was no rush to collect points!

“Um, the comrades who got on the bus together should all be educated youth sent to the countryside. We were just queuing up together!” Xia Wan said seriously.

When the comrades at the educated youth office were taking attendance just now, they were all standing together. Does this girl have amnesia?

A hint of embarrassment flashed across the girl's face: "Is...is that so...I didn't notice just now..."
