I thought the journey would be smooth sailing, but to my surprise, we encountered a minor setback the day before we were about to get off the train.
In the early morning, sunlight streamed through the car window and fell on Xia Wan's face, gently waking her from her sleep.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes, felt a sudden urge to urinate, and then lazily stretched out a big yawn.
She turned to look at her brother sitting next to her, smiled and greeted him, then slowly stood up to go to the restroom.
Because the aisles inside the carriages are very narrow and passengers are carrying large bags of luggage, it is almost unavoidable for people to bump into each other.
After using the restroom in the summer evening, Xia let out a long sigh of relief, then carefully turned sideways, trying to avoid the crowd around her, and walked back step by step along the corridor.
The train was filled with an old and mixed atmosphere, as if telling the stories of its long journey.
The corridor was crowded with people, some sitting and some standing, some talking in hushed tones, and some resting with their eyes closed.
Xia Wan struggled through the crowd, with only one thought in her mind—to get back to her comfortable seat as quickly as possible.
Just as she was about to reach her seat, she accidentally bumped into a woman dressed in relatively fashionable clothes who was walking towards her.
At that moment, the woman was hurrying along with her head down, as if something urgent was weighing on her mind.
Xia Wan happened to be walking from another direction. Because the woman kept her head down, Xia Wan failed to notice her in time and avoid her.
Just as the two were about to pass each other, the water glass in the woman's hand suddenly tilted, and the water inside poured out as if it had found an outlet.
The water inevitably splashed onto Xia Wan's body.
Fortunately, it was winter, and everyone was wearing thick cotton-padded clothes to keep warm, so the water didn't cause Xia Wan too much trouble. And luckily, the water in the woman's cup wasn't too hot, so it wouldn't burn her skin.
Xia Wan frowned slightly, her gaze naturally turning to the woman opposite her.
However, she only glanced at her indifferently and had no intention of getting entangled with this woman any further.
So she gently turned to the side, preparing to make way for the woman to pass first.
However, things don't always go as people expect.
Xia Wan didn't want to cause trouble, but it was clear that this unreasonable woman had no such intention.
Perhaps seeing that Xia Wan was just a young girl and thought she was weak and easy to bully, the woman's face instantly turned gloomy. She pointed at Xia Wan and cursed without any politeness, "You brat, are you blind? Don't you know how to watch where you're going? If you bump into me and hurt me, can you afford to pay for it?"
Hearing this unreasonable accusation, Xia Wan raised her eyebrows, and a gloomy look gradually appeared in her originally calm eyes.
She stared directly at the arrogant woman before her and replied coldly, "Are you made of paper? That you'd break at the slightest touch?"
"You brat, how dare you speak to your elders like that! You have no manners!" The woman screamed as if she had been stepped on.
That face, which was originally somewhat charming, was now contorted with rage. The fat on her face jiggled with her exaggerated expressions, and her eyes were glared at Xia Wan as if she wanted to devour her alive.
At the same time, her strong, thick hands gripped Xia Wan's slender arm tightly, as if afraid that if she let go, the duck that was about to be eaten would fly away.
"Look at this! My brand new clothes cost me a lot of money! And you've torn them like this, you have to pay for them! Not a penny less!"
The woman made a fuss while looking down and pretending to examine her so-called "new clothes."
She pointed to a noticeable tear in her clothes. The tear looked straight and had neat edges, clearly not damage caused by a simple collision.
The woman raised her head and looked at Xia Wan again, carefully examining the plainly dressed, even shabby, girl from head to toe.
Seeing Xia Wan's faded old clothes and patched-up trousers, the woman's lips curled up slightly, revealing a hint of contempt and disdain.
He thought to himself: "Hmph, with his poor appearance, he probably couldn't afford to pay for this Dacron dress even if he sold all his possessions!"
Xia Wan looked down in the direction the woman was pointing and indeed found that the tear on the garment looked rather strange.
She wasn't the kind of pushover who would let anyone bully her. With just one glance, she knew perfectly well that she had run into a scoundrel trying to extort money from her!
Thinking of this, Xia Wan's originally calm eyes flashed with a sharp light, like a drawn sword piercing straight at the woman.
"You keep saying I caused this accident? What proof do you have?" Xia Wan straightened up, meeting the woman's fierce gaze without fear, and coldly questioned her.
The woman was stunned for a moment because she didn't expect Xia Wan to be so calm and composed, and she stood there dumbfounded.
But she quickly realized what was happening, put her hands on her hips, and adopted a shrewish stance, her voice becoming increasingly shrill and piercing: "Oh ho, you ignorant brat, you dare to deny it? It was clearly you who blindly bumped into me just now, and so many people here saw it clearly! If you don't want to pay compensation, then don't even think about leaving this place!"
