Cheng Jiawen took out the key that he hadn't used for a long time from his pocket and opened the door. The yard was quiet, and Xu's father and mother were not there.
Xu Qianjiao and Cheng Jiawen walked in and closed the door. Cheng Jiawen parked his bicycle in the yard and took the food out from the front of the bicycle.
"You said you had something to do tonight, so you were going to buy food?" Xu Qianjiao looked at Cheng Jiawen curiously.
Cheng Jiawen nodded and said, "Well, I went to see my good friend from high school and bought some food from him."
"With the recent weather, I heard a lot of people at the station saying that they need to store food. They said that the price of food on the black market has increased by one third, and if some time passes, the price of food will be even more expensive." Xu Qianjiao frowned, her face full of worry.
Cheng Jiawen stepped forward to smooth her brows, "Don't worry, I'll take care of the food. I'll be here a little later these days to get the food."
He sighed, "Now everyone in the city is consciously storing food. It's a little better in the village. Everyone has some food stored, so it's not as serious as in the city. But we can't relax either. It's better to keep a low profile on buying food. It's not the worst time yet. When the worst time comes, if others know that we have food, it may bring disaster..."
Xu Qianjiao nodded. "It's a crime to possess a treasure. When everyone has nothing to eat and only your family has it, what will everyone choose? I dare not think about it, I really dare not think about it..."
"Bang~" A loud noise suddenly came from the backyard, as if the whole world was shaking.
Cheng Jiawen and Xu Qianjiao looked at each other at the same time, with a hint of surprise and confusion in their eyes.
Cheng Jiawen subconsciously tightened his grip on Xu Qianjiao's hand and gently pushed her back. He then stepped forward to block the way and said softly, "Don't be afraid. Maybe something just fell. Follow me and we'll go take a look."
Xu Qianjiao nodded slightly to show that she understood, but her heart was still filled with uneasiness.
She clutched the corner of Cheng Jiawen's clothes tightly, as if that was the only support that could give her a sense of security.
The two walked side by side towards the backyard. With each step, the tense atmosphere grew more intense, making it hard to breathe.
One step, two steps, the two of them were getting closer and closer to the backyard.
What came into view was a big pit. Cheng Jiawen took Xu Qianjiao to the front of the pit and prepared to shine a flashlight inside.
Suddenly, Xu's mother heard a voice above her head, and she looked up at the two of them and said, "Jiaojiao, Jiawen, you're back."
The two were startled by the sudden sound, "Mom? What are you doing?" Xu Qianjiao patted her chest and said fearfully.
Xu's mother climbed out of the big pit underground, and Xu's father followed closely behind. Both of them were dirty, with mud all over their hair, clothes and shoes.
Xu Qianjiao went forward to help Xu's mother brush off the mud on her body, but Xu's mother grabbed her hand and said, "Oh, no need to brush off. Let's just go take a shower. Don't dirty your clothes."
Cheng Jiawen looked at the big pit, and vaguely understood what Xu's mother wanted to do. He couldn't help but admire in his heart: Xu's mother is very wise, and she has started to prepare for the future.
"Mom, what are you doing?" Xu Qianjiao asked curiously, looking at the big pit.
Xu's mother said with a smug look on her face, "Dig a cellar."
"Dig a cellar? Don't we have a cellar at home?" Xu Qianjiao didn't understand why they needed to dig another cellar. Her family already had a very large cellar, which was more than enough for their family to use.
Mother Xu wiped her face and rolled her eyes at her. "Stupid, it doesn't matter if there's one more. The previous one was dug out by someone else, and everyone knows about it. This one was dug out by myself, and only my family knows about it. If anything goes wrong later, I'll have a backup plan."
"By the way, Jiawen, if you come across any grain after work these days, please buy some. The weather this year is very abnormal, and it is very likely that we will not be able to make it in time for spring planting. If that is the case, after paying the public grain next year, there will probably be no grain to distribute." Xu's mother said worriedly.
"Okay, I get it, Mom. I've found a good guy. I'll bring some back every day. Slowly, it won't be so noticeable."
"Okay, as long as you know what's going on."
-------------------------------------
The next morning, Cheng Jiawen returned to the police station immediately after sending Xu Qianjiao to work.
He sat inside for a while, then saw Officer Liu walk in with an angry look on his face. Everyone was shocked to see him with the same expression again, "What happened again? The previous one hasn't been resolved yet, and now he's here again?"
"Come in for a meeting later."
After Officer Liu finished speaking, he immediately walked into the conference room. The people sitting outside looked at each other in confusion, and couldn't help but curse in their hearts: This year is really a turbulent time. It's only been a short time, and another case may have happened. They don't even give us a break.
