Chapter 2: Tit for Tat

"Click, click, click!"

Although supplies were scarce in that era, the quality of things was really good. This pair of scissors cuts clothes exceptionally smoothly, and just listening to the sound is refreshing.

In just a few minutes, Ning Xi cut a pile of clothes into rags, which were so tattered that they could not be tattered anymore. Then she threw them all into Lin Xiaoyue's room and flipped through her old homework books.

I tore off two pieces of paper and wrote a letter of complaint.

She took the household registration book to register Lin Xiaoyue to go to the countryside, and the letter of complaint was prepared for Lin Zhendong.

These brother and sister are of the same kind, acting like young masters and young ladies at home. When the original owner first came to this family, she often secretly threw away her meals.

I would rather waste food than let the original owner eat it.

Lin Zhendong started school early and joined the army after graduating from high school at the age of 18. He has now been a conscripted soldier for two years.

Lin Xiaoyue and Ning Xi both started school late and graduated this year. According to the policy, only one person in a family can stay, and the others who are unemployed have to go to the countryside.

Then Ning Xi was signed up.

The more important reason is that Lin Yongjun's current job originally belonged to Ning Xi, and she can take over as long as she graduates.

The original owner's father was a soldier. After being injured on the battlefield, he retired and worked in the finance department of a food factory. He died in an accident while saving someone after only a few years.

The city praised him and issued him a hero certificate. The factory also responded that his job position could be retained until Ning Xi came of age, and he could take over the job as long as Ning Xi obtained a high school diploma.

Then as expected, an accident happened.

He Hongjuan's remarried husband Lin Yongjun was unemployed, so she went to the factory to plead, hoping that the factory director would give the job to Lin Yongjun temporarily to reduce the burden on the family.

After several attempts, the factory finally agreed and signed an agreement, requiring Ning Xi to return to her job as soon as she graduated.

Lin Yongjun only has an elementary school education, so naturally he cannot work in finance. He can only be an assembly line worker. After working for so many years, he has actually done quite well.

I now earn 36 yuan a month, and I also receive other benefits during festivals and holidays.

How could he possibly give up such a good job when he was still young? Before Ning Xi got her diploma, he went to the street office to sign her up to go to the countryside.

The trip was to Nanji Province, thousands of miles away. It was the "double harvest" season, and according to Ning Xi's physical condition, it was not certain whether she could come back alive.

But this is not important, because now everyone knows that once you go to the countryside, you can never come back.

Ning Xi went to the street office with her household registration book, stuck her head in and looked inside. There was only a strange female staff member inside.

"God is helping me."

You have to know that population movement is strictly restricted now. There are only a few people in an area, and the street staff's job is to deal with the masses. I don't say that they know everyone, but they are definitely familiar to everyone.

"Hello, comrade. I'm here to sign up to go to the countryside. Here's my household registration book."

"What's your name?"

Guan Xiaohong just replaced her aunt to work at the Youth League Office today. She was assigned to the office to assist with the work. She didn't expect that someone would come to sign up on her first day of work, which really surprised her.

"Are you really going to the countryside?" She confirmed. The little girl looked unwell. "I heard life in the countryside is very hard."

Ning Xi: You are a very nice person~

But she was short of time, so she urged, "Going to the countryside is a response to the country's call. I am wholeheartedly dedicated to building the motherland. Please do it for me quickly."

After saying that, Ning Xi showed a skeptical expression, and her eyes seemed to be saying: How come you, a staff member, don’t have this much awareness?

Seeing that this man was determined to go to the countryside and was looking at her with such eyes, Guan Xiaohong felt that his kindness was taken for granted. She did not waste any more words, took the household registration booklet and quickly registered the information.

"By the way, comrade, could you tell me about arranging a place in Qing Province? I heard that it's quite difficult there, and it's perfect for me to do something big."

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, what stunning scenery! Look how much she considers others.

Guan Xiaohong: ...

With your tiny body, you'd collapse after just two days of farm work. How can you even dream of a big career?

However, looking at the mysterious and confident look of this female comrade, she swallowed her words of advice. Well, it's hard to persuade a damned ghost with kind words!

Maybe he really has great ambitions, but we can't judge people by their appearance, right?

"Okay, you can't go back on your word after you've registered. Go back and wait for notification." Guan Xiaohong quickly finished the process and returned the household registration booklet to her.

"Comrade, I heard there are subsidies for going to the countryside. There should be quite a few in these remote areas, right?"

Guan Xiaohong choked. It seemed like she came here for the subsidy. She didn't know whether to say she was smart or stupid.

However, she didn't show it on her face and said in a businesslike manner, "The subsidy will be distributed after the location of the queue is determined and approved by the higher authorities. I can't give it to you now."

"So when can I expect to receive it?"

"The last batch of applicants was huge, so this time we'll probably have to wait a little longer, probably at least a week at the earliest."

Guan Xiaohong sighed. It was difficult to mobilize people now. Everyone's enthusiasm for joining the queue had disappeared after seeing what happened to their predecessors.

"Don't worry, you won't be missing. Go back and wait for notification."

Ning Xi thought that it seemed that she would definitely not be able to get the money. Since she couldn't get it, Lin Xiaoyue couldn't get it either!

"Comrade, you misunderstood me. I don't want money. My family is well-off, my parents are both working, and my brother is a soldier. I want to donate this money to those in need!"

"Last time, Uncle Wang from our neighborhood almost died at home because he had a fever and couldn't afford medical treatment.

It's so pitiful, I can't bear to watch it, so I want to donate this money, just to do my bit, please help me!"
