Chapter 31: Calling for a Wife
The words had barely left his mouth.
The surrounding air pressure suddenly dropped.
Grandma Xu glared at Wenya secretly, warning her not to cause trouble at the gate and give others a show.
Wenya, however, seemed oblivious to the subtle cues and continued her provocations.
Ning Tang's eyes grew even colder, but she didn't show it on her face. Instead, she took Grandma Xu's arm and walked into the house with a smile on her face.
“I know my second sister-in-law is doing this for my own good. The child in my belly is not only the treasure of the Xu family, but also my heart and soul. As the mother, I care about it more than anyone else.”
“But at that time, Qiao Feng was fighting the wildfire, and I was a doctor. If he had been injured in the fire, it would have been irresponsible of me to only care about my own safety.”
Of her three grandsons, Grandma Xu naturally loved her youngest grandson the most.
Hearing Ning Tang's words, he immediately nodded, his eyes full of satisfaction and kindness. He tightened his grip on his granddaughter-in-law's hand, looking very affectionate.
When he turned to look at Wenya, his face immediately darkened.
"Tangtang can distinguish between what's important and what's not, so you don't need to worry about that."
“Wenya, it’s not that Grandma wants to criticize you, but Qiaofeng just survived, and Tangtang has lost a lot of weight and suffered a lot. Instead of caring about others, you’re criticizing the child. Is that reasonable?”
"Those who know you might think you're just worried and confused, but those who don't might think you just don't like Tangtang."
These words were like a slap in the face to Wenya.
Her face turned pale and then black. She wanted to open her mouth to explain, but was startled by the stare in Grandpa Xu's eyes.
Although the old man didn't say anything just now, judging from his frown and unpleasant expression, he was clearly protecting Ning Tang.
Xu Qiaofeng didn't speak, nor did he glance at Wenya.
It was as if he treated her like air, striding past her with his long legs.
Ning Tang steadily helped Grandma Xu into the house, her voice gentle: "Grandma, I'll have you go for a follow-up check-up later to see if you're feeling any better."
"Tangtang, you are such a sweet little darling of Grandma."
"By the way, Tangtang, I've had a bit of a headache these past few days. Could you please take a look at Grandpa's head later as well?"
Seeing everyone in the room surrounding Ning Tang, Wen Ya was so angry she wanted to set a torch on fire.
What good seed could a child born from a capitalist's daughter's womb possibly be?
Then, thinking of her cousin Lu Niannian, who was recuperating abroad, her eyes were filled with resentment and malice.
Having taken Nian Nian's place, she would never let Ning Tang get away with it!
Inside the house.
Ning Tang had already helped Grandma Xu sit on the sofa and put her hand on the old woman's wrist.
After a long pause, she said in a gentle tone, "Grandma, your pulse is much more stable than last time. As long as you take your tonic on time, you will gradually get better."
Grandma Xu nodded with a smile.
When she went out these past two days, many of her old friends asked her if she had taken some kind of magic pill, as she looked exceptionally healthy.
God knows how much she wanted to show off Ning Tang, her precious little darling.
If it weren't for the third sister insisting that the family keep quiet, she would have definitely said it back then!
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. Grandma Xu glared at Xu Qiaofeng, who was sitting next to her.
"..." Xu Qiaofeng was puzzled.
After finishing the last bite of the orange, he pointed at Ning Tang and said in a deep voice, "Ning Tang, please come upstairs. I have something to say to you."
Ning Tang was taken aback.
Seeing his uncomfortable sitting posture, I immediately understood.
"Qiaofeng, you're married now, why are you still so distant?" Grandpa Xu frowned unhappily after hearing Ning Tang's name. "Call her 'wife' at home, and call her by her name when you're out. Do I need to teach you such a simple thing?"
Knowing his grandfather's habit of being a chatterbox, Xu Qiaofeng put his hands in his pockets and said without thinking, "Wife, please come upstairs."
Ning Tang blushed instantly upon realizing what Xu Qiaofeng had called her.
They didn't dare to look at each other and turned to walk upstairs.
We didn't talk much until after we changed his bandages and went downstairs to eat.
Steaming hot food was already laid out on the table, and Aunt Zhang specially pushed the stewed pigeon soup, which was cooked until tender, in front of Ning Tang.
Ning Tang looked up and saw that both of her sisters-in-law had pigeon soup in their hands, which put her mind at ease.
Just as he was about to express his gratitude, Wenya, who was sitting next to him, suddenly spoke up.
"These pigeons look good; they seem like they'd be good for your health."
"Ning Tang, you're too thin. Here, have this too. Drink some more to help yourself."
As he spoke, he picked up his pigeon soup and poured it into Ning Tang's bowl, his enthusiastic manner making it seem as if he genuinely cared about her health.
No one had forgotten what she had said at the door earlier; her sudden change in personality caused everyone to frown.
Something unusual must be going on.
Ning Tang looked up at Wen Ya and said with a smile, "Thank you for your kindness, Second Sister-in-law."
Seeing that she had taken it, Wenya suddenly sighed.
She looked as if she was thinking about something troubling her.
He sighed for several minutes in a row.
With no one responding and the performance clearly on the verge of collapse, Wenya had no choice but to speak up, her face turning ashen:
"Sigh, seeing Ning Tang's appearance suddenly reminds me of Niannian. I wonder how that girl is doing outside."
"Qiaofeng, I still remember when you and Niannian were little, you played house together. She was the bride, and you wouldn't let anyone else be the groom. You even beat up your older brother."
The words had barely left his mouth.
Su Ying's eyes turned cold, and she put down her chopsticks with greater force.
"Second sister-in-law, that was all in the past. Why bring it up now?"
Xu Qiaolan was able to marry Su Ying back then entirely because of her perseverance.
Married for six years, he's still incredibly jealous.
Not to mention the opposite sex, Su Ying has to be wary of even the same sex.
Seeing the tense atmosphere, Wenya immediately panicked.
She quickly explained, "Sister-in-law, I was just joking, don't take it seriously."
Su Ying's family is on par with the Xu family; offending her would have unimaginable consequences...
Su Ying snorted coldly and didn't say anything.
At this moment, Xu Qiaofeng also looked up at Wenya, his tone as cold as ice.
"If Second Sister-in-law really has nothing to say, then sit down and eat properly, and stop bringing up irrelevant people."
"How can Nian Nian be a completely unrelated person..."
Wenya's face turned pale and then flushed as she was rebuked, and she couldn't utter a word for a long time.
He glanced at Ning Tang, who was calmly drinking soup with her head down, and felt both angry and anxious.
In the end, he didn't dare say anything, didn't even eat, and stormed out with his bag.
...
Family housing.
"Captain Zhang, you're back?"
The wives of soldiers downstairs greeted Zhang Yanfei and Ning Xin warmly.
"Just got back."
"You guys must have had a tough time this time, right?"
Zhang Yanfei wanted to go upstairs to rest, but these women wouldn't let her go, clearly they had something to say.
Seeing this, he let Ning Xin go up first.
"Hey, Captain Zhang, you were such a fine young man, how could you...sigh, what a pity."
The crowd looked hesitant, as if they wanted to say something but couldn't.
Zhang Yanfei frowned, "Sisters, just say what you want to say."
"It's nothing serious."
"These past few days, people in the building have been saying that Ning Xin is supposedly a capitalist's daughter, and that she faked illness and ran away from the Great Northern Wilderness."
"I don't know if this is true or not. There are rumors going around that are quite detailed. Your sisters-in-law are just worried that it will affect you."
"In the few days since you left, your regimental commander has been coming to inquire about things, I heard it's about performance reviews and promotions..."
