Chapter 27 Die, Ning Tang!
“From the beginning until now, you have been treating more than 30 wounded during the day and haven’t even had time to eat dinner.”
"Ning Tang, do you think you're made of iron?"
Xu Qiaofeng's voice was a few decibels deeper than before, his gaze falling on the woman's thin shoulders, his eyes hiding a deep, unfathomable darkness.
Ning Tang was taken aback.
She instinctively tried to pull her hand away, but he gripped it even tighter.
My heart felt like it had been gently brushed by a feather, a mixture of sourness and itch.
She thought Xu Qiaofeng was angry because he was worried about the child, but she didn't expect him to be concerned about his own health...
Thinking about her misunderstanding and her cold tone, Ning Tang felt a little lost.
Avoiding Xu Qiaofeng's intense gaze, she explained in a low voice, "I... I just didn't feel hungry when I got busy."
Since her rebirth, without Ning's mother's attempts to poison her, and with daily doses of nourishing Chinese medicine, her body has become much stronger than before.
And perhaps because of the woman in the space, she didn't feel heavy at all, except for being a little tired, even after a busy afternoon.
Xu Qiaofeng was unaware of these things, so he wouldn't believe this explanation.
He gently pulled her towards his tent by gripping her wrist.
There was no one in the tent; the other soldiers were outside rescuing people. Inside, there was only a waterproof nylon sheet laid on the ground as a mattress, and nothing else.
Ning Tang took in the surroundings and felt a pang of sympathy for the soldiers.
Xu Qiaofeng bent down and took out an aluminum lunchbox from his backpack. It was still warm to the touch, and he raised his eyebrows in satisfaction.
Upon opening the lid, the aroma of the food wafted out.
Inside was one meat dish and one vegetable dish, but not much meat; it was almost entirely vegetables, along with a full half-box of steaming brown rice, which looked like it had just been made.
Xu Qiaofeng handed over the chopsticks, his tone leaving no room for argument: "Here you go, eat it while it's hot."
"It's past lunchtime outside, and even if it's not, there's hardly any food left."
One sentence interrupted Ning Tang's attempt to refuse.
She took the chopsticks, glanced down at the food in the lunchbox, and said earnestly, "You haven't eaten either, have you? I'll cut it in half, and we'll eat together."
“I don’t like this dish.” Xu Qiaofeng interrupted her, sat down on the ground, and spread his long legs wide open.
Meeting Ning Tang's concerned gaze, he spoke in a stiff tone, revealing a hint of awkwardness: "I like to eat compressed biscuits, you can eat them yourself."
Ning Tang's expression became skeptical.
Does anyone really enjoy eating bland and tasteless compressed biscuits?
But then I thought, Xu Qiaofeng usually gets his meals cooked and delivered by Aunt Zhang, so maybe he really doesn't like the communal meals at the team's.
After thanking him softly, she began to eat in small bites.
Xu Qiaofeng, though he said those words, kept his gaze fixed on Ning Tang's swollen cheek from chewing, and the deep look in his eyes gradually softened.
After finishing her meal, before Ning Tang left, Xu Qiaofeng stuffed a mattress into her bed again.
"You doctors don't have enough blankets right now, and it gets cold at night. Take mine and use it for now."
"Then what will you do?"
"I'm a grown man, a real man. Even if I were left in the snow overnight, I'd be fine the next day. You should worry more about yourself."
As Ning Tang said this, she inexplicably felt that Xu Qiaofeng was being incredibly arrogant.
What he said makes sense; there's no need to refuse out of unnecessary pride and make things difficult for yourself.
...
the next day.
The wildfires are still burning, and they're even more ferocious than yesterday.
The number of wounded soldiers was several times greater.
Ning Tang had just finished treating the last wounded patient and was rinsing the scalpel when Ning Xin rushed in anxiously.
Seeing Ning Tang's eyes light up, he grabbed her arm and said anxiously, "Tangtang, come with me!"
"A tree on a hillside outside was burned down, and when it fell, there were still many people underneath. Oh dear, it was a terrible sight!"
Ning Tang suddenly stopped what she was doing and looked up at Ning Xin.
"Where exactly is it? Has anyone gone to rescue them?"
She couldn't sleep last night, so she went for a walk and realized the danger of wildfires. Large trees can not only injure people, but also potentially start new fires.
Every second of delay could result in another injury.
Ning Xin's lips slowly curved into a smile, but she quickly regained her composure. Seeing that Ning Tang had already picked up the first-aid kit, she pulled her and quickly walked outside.
"It's on that steep slope to the west."
"Brother Yanfei has already taken people over, but the tree is too heavy for them to lift. I heard there are more than ten people trapped underneath, and one of them can't even breathe..."
Upon hearing this, Ning Tang became even more anxious.
Completely unaware that Ning Xin beside him had a guilty look on her face.
Meanwhile, Xu Qiaofeng, who was standing some distance away, looked up and spotted the two figures.
Seeing Ning Xin leading Ning Tang into a secluded grove, he felt uneasy and quickly followed without thinking.
I followed Ningxin westward for a long time, and the more we walked, the more I felt something was wrong.
Along the way, not only did we not see any rescue doctors or nurses, but the fire situation was also much weaker than in other places. The only thing we could smell was the increasingly strong burnt smell.
Ning Tang sensed something was wrong and was about to call for someone to stop when Ning Xin grabbed her shoulder.
"We're almost there, just ahead on that little path!"
Ning Xin's voice was unsteady; it was her first time doing something wrong, and she was completely unsure of herself.
Seeing that Ning Tang had become suspicious, he didn't dare to look her in the eye.
"Ning Xin? Didn't you say that rescuers had arrived? Where are they? I haven't seen them." Ning Tang stopped and asked with a frown.
"They're all up ahead, you'll see when you go check."
Ning felt guilty and her usually harsh tone became somewhat gentle.
She considered letting it go, but when she saw the foreign brand watch on Ning Tang's wrist, that hesitation vanished instantly.
She had been pestering Zhang Yanfei for a long time but hadn't gotten the watch, and instead got scolded. Why should Ning Tang get it?
Why wear it so openly on your hand? Are you trying to show off?
A flash of hatred crossed Ning Xin's eyes, and she shoved Ning Tang's shoulder abruptly.
"Go to hell!"
"No matter which lifetime you live, Ning Tang, don't even think about living a better life than me!"
Ning Tang staggered backward from the sudden movement.
There was a hillside behind them; the consequences of falling down would be unimaginable.
She gritted her teeth and crashed into a large tree that was half burned.
The rough bark made her shoulder blades ache, and before she could even stand up straight, a crisp "crack" sound suddenly rang out above her head.
Ning Tang subconsciously looked up.
A tree branch, charred black by the fire, was breaking off downwards with flames still clinging to it, pointing directly at her head!
Just as it was about to fall.
Xu Qiaofeng's roar was almost hoarse and cracked as it rang in my ears.
"careful!"
He came from behind at an angle, and without thinking, he pulled Ning Tang into his arms.
He turned around and used his broad back to catch the falling branch.
Almost instantly, Xu Qiaofeng let out a muffled groan of pain.
The clothes were burned with several holes, and the faint smell of blood quickly filled Ning Tang's nose.
"Xu Qiaofeng?"
How's your back?
