Chapter 18: Sisters Together, It's Not a Bad Idea
A hint of coldness flashed in Ning Tang's eyes, but her face wore just the right amount of bewilderment:
"What are you saying, sister? Was the house burgled?"
"I was perfectly fine when I left home, how could this be..."
She paused, deliberately feigning a worried expression.
"Was the gate to your little garden not locked properly? I think I heard voices over there before I left."
Ning Xin insisted on building a small garden. To make things easier, she installed a simple fence gate, but she was too lazy to lock it. Her mother had told her off several times, but she wouldn't listen.
As expected, Ning Xin felt somewhat guilty and uncertain after what was said.
She changed the subject, carefully looked Ning Tang over, and only when she saw that Ning Tang didn't seem to be lying did she move on from the matter.
"Answer my question first."
"Didn't you run away from home? What are you doing in the military compound? Did you come looking for Xu Qiaofeng behind my back?"
Just thinking about this possibility made Ning Xin's eyes burn with anger.
Even if she looks down on Xu Qiaofeng, she won't allow anyone else to lay a finger on him!
Especially since this person is Ning Tang, who is against her!
“Sister, we’re both women, you should understand why I don’t want to marry a bachelor,” Ning Tang said sadly. “I was planning to leave Shanghai by train, but I unexpectedly met Grandma Xu.”
"She found out I was pregnant and wouldn't let me leave no matter what..."
Ningxin became even angrier after hearing this.
Unexpectedly, her life didn't follow the usual path; Ning Tang actually climbed the social ladder and married into the Xu family.
She asked uncomfortably, "Is Xu Qiaofeng good to you?"
"...He's busy with work."
Upon hearing this, Ning Xin revealed an expression that said, "I knew it."
In her past life, after she married Xu Qiaofeng, he claimed to be busy with work, but he actually had no interest in women at all.
The thought that Ning Tang would be the one bullied and tormented by Wen Ya in the future, and that Ning Tang would be the one living a life of widowhood, made her feel much better.
The Xu family will be finished sooner or later, and Ning Tang might even have to cling to her coattails in the future.
"Ning Tang, find me a place to stay, and while you're at it, bring some food and clothes from the Xu family."
She needs to tidy herself up; Fei-gege will definitely fall in love at first sight when he sees her.
"good."
Ning Tang nodded: "It's just that the guards at the door are very fierce, and outsiders can't get in. Sister, please wait for me outside for a while."
Ning Xin knew that last time she had been dragged away by the guards and taken to the police station.
He waved to Ning Tang, signaling her to leave quickly.
They returned to their previous spot and continued to stake out Zhang Yanfei.
Half an hour passed.
Ning Xin was covered in mosquito bites and clutching her aching stomach, but Ning Tang was nowhere to be seen.
Growing increasingly impatient, he swatted the mosquitoes off his arm and cursed Ning Tang for dawdling.
Another hour passed.
Ning Xin finally couldn't resist standing up and trying to get closer to the gate of the compound to see if she could see the Xu family's courtyard.
I had only taken two steps when I was stopped by the guard at the entrance.
"Comrade, this area is off-limits. Please step back."
“I’m waiting for my sister, Ning Tang. She lives inside,” Ning Xin explained, suppressing her anger. “She told me to wait here. If you don’t believe me, you can go in and ask her.”
The guard shook his head expressionlessly.
"No one is allowed to approach without registration."
"If you can't wait for anyone, you can leave your contact information, or come back tomorrow morning."
"I'll wait here!" Ning Xin retorted irritably.
Not daring to actually clash with the guards, he could only retreat to the edge of the bushes in frustration.
Just as dawn was breaking, a jeep pulled up in front of the military compound, waking Ningxin from her drowsiness.
She opened her eyes and saw that it was actually Brother Fei!
Ignoring his numb legs, he staggered forward.
Her throat was hoarse from hunger and thirst, but she forced out the softest, most charming voice: "Brother Fei, I've finally waited for you!"
Zhang Yanfei had just gotten out of the car when she was suddenly stopped and frowned as she looked at the woman in front of her.
Covered in dust and mosquito bites, with a sallow complexion, he looked like a refugee.
He took a half step back, not forgetting that there were people watching, and smiled politely:
"This is a comrade. Who are you? I don't think I know you."
These words were like a bucket of cold water poured over Ning Xin's head. She was stunned for a moment before she realized what they meant.
She was reborn, but Zhang Yanfei was not.
This was the first time the two had met.
Ning Xin realized that he was Xu Qiaofeng's subordinate, so if she wanted to get closer to him, she would have to mention Ning Tang.
"Comrade Zhang Yanfei, I am Ning Tang's older sister, Ning Xin."
"I often heard Tangtang mention you before, saying that you are kind to people, so I dared to take the initiative to greet you."
As expected.
Upon hearing Ning Tang's name, Zhang Yanfei raised an eyebrow and glanced at Ning Xin from head to toe.
He's been worried lately about how to get closer to Ning Tang.
It must be really unpleasant to have such a beautiful woman right under your nose, to be able to see her but not have her.
Zhang Yanfei's tone softened considerably: "So you're Ning Tang's older sister."
"You just came from home? Why are you just waiting here? Didn't Ning Tang tell you how to get into the compound?"
Seeing how concerned he was, Ningxin assumed he was captivated by her beauty.
He quickly followed the topic and pretended to be pitiful: "Tangtang told me to wait for her here, but I waited all night and didn't see her. I didn't dare to leave, so I could only stay here."
As she spoke, she deliberately made her eyes redden, as if she wanted to cry but couldn't.
"If I had known better, I would have found a place to stay first, and I wouldn't have been starving and getting bitten by mosquitoes."
These words struck a chord with Zhang Yanfei.
He quickly calculated in his mind and said enthusiastically, "Come with me first, I'll take you to a nearby hotel to stay, and then I'll take you to find Ning Tang when it gets light."
Ning Xin was overjoyed and wanted to hug and kiss him.
On the surface, however, he pretended to be flattered.
"How could I trouble you with this?"
"Comrade Yanfei, could you take me to the bathhouse to wash up first, and maybe I can buy some new clothes while we're at it?"
Ning Xin secretly changed her form of address, calling him "Comrade Yanfei" was more intimate than "Comrade Zhang," and it would also make it easier for feelings to develop over time.
The libertine Zhang Yanfei naturally noticed this.
A hint of amusement flashed in his eyes, but his smile grew even gentler: "Of course, no problem. A clean wash and a new set of clothes will make you feel better."
He went along with it and let Ningxin get in the car.
Inwardly, however, he felt contempt. She was good at taking advantage of others, but that was fine too; she was slow-witted and easy to fool.
Once you've made her happy, it will be easier to get information about Ning Tang out of her later.
The car quickly drove to the public bathhouse, where we bought a set of clothes along the way.
It was early morning, before dawn, and hardly anyone came.
Zhang Yanfei sat in the car smoking, waiting for almost two hours. Just as his patience was about to run out, Ning Xin came out wearing new clothes.
He raised an eyebrow when he saw Ning Xin after she had been cleaned up.
Surprisingly, this person was quite good-looking.
Her skin had a pinkish tint, and her exposed neck was also quite fair.
However, compared to Ning Tang, who is a pearl, Ning Xin seems to be nothing more than a fish eye.
Zhang Yanfei withdrew her gaze, and the initial amazement she had felt vanished instantly.
But it's not impossible if the sisters go together.
He stubbed out his cigarette, got out of the car, and said in a somewhat perfunctory tone, "All washed up? You look much more refreshed."
"Alright, get in the car, I'll take you to the hotel."
The two were completely unaware that someone in the distance had been frowning and staring at them for a long time.
