Chapter 81 Being a Good Stepmother

Her own son told her that he had brought his eldest grandson to Song Yinhua's house, and that he had seen his grandson enter the yard and heard Song Yinhua talking to his grandson before leaving.

But there wasn't even a trace of a grandson in this house.

Song Yinhua and the others left in such a hurry that they didn't even close the door to their house.

Wang Naiyun searched the house inside and out, but couldn't find her eldest grandson.

She noticed that the vegetables in the yard were growing really well, so she casually went down to the vegetable patch to pick some vegetables and cucumbers.

"Isn't this Wang Naiyun from the next village?" A village woman happened to be passing by, recognized Wang Naiyun, glanced at the empty yard, and asked, "Picking cucumbers?"

"Yinhua is dating my Zhiyuan. She said the vegetables at home are growing well, so she asked me to get some," Wang Naiyun said casually.

“I heard people in the village talking that Yinhua doesn’t like your son and isn’t dating him.”

"Don't talk nonsense. My grandson has been taken in by Yinhua to take care of him. How could he not have a girlfriend?" Wang Naiyun quickly picked all the cucumbers from the vegetable garden and said mysteriously, "Let me tell you, Yinhua is already my Zhiyuan's woman!"

The village woman looked surprised. "It's progressed this far, so the banquet is about to start?"

"It'll be here soon, my eldest grandson has already started calling Yinhua 'Mom'!" Wang Naiyun laughed happily.

Another villager carrying a hoe was passing by on his way home from the fields. Hearing the two talking, he said in surprise, "Hey? I haven't seen any children in Erzhuang's family! Erzhuang's son Baogen is getting married soon, and the family is busy. I heard they're even renovating the house to prepare a wedding room for their son."

The village woman said, "His family only has these three small tile-roofed houses, plus a small kitchen with a stove. Neither of his daughters is married yet. Once Baogen gets married, this little space will definitely not be enough for them to live in, which is why he wants his two daughters to get married as soon as possible!"

"I haven't heard of this. I don't know, so I won't talk nonsense." The villagers were cautious in their speech and didn't gossip.

Wang Naiyun pressed the villagers, "Didn't you see Yinhua taking care of my eldest grandson?"

The villagers shook their heads, "Never seen it before."

"What about my eldest grandson?" Wang Naiyun asked. "My husband Zhiyuan said that my eldest grandson is with Yinhua."

“My house is just over there, two houses away. I pass by Erzhuang’s house every day on my way to work in the fields, but I’ve never seen any children in Erzhuang’s family.” The villager then asked, “How old is your eldest grandson?”

"He's three years old, and so cute. Everyone who sees him loves him," Wang Naiyun praised her eldest grandson.

"When did your grandson come over?" The villager stroked his chin, as if he remembered something.

"Just a few days ago..." Wang Naiyun couldn't say the exact date, "It was about seven or eight days ago."

The villager's eyes lit up immediately, and he gestured with his hand, "Is your grandson this tall? Is he wearing a dirty little vest that's so dirty you can't even see the original fabric, and a pair of shorts?"

“Yes, yes, that’s my grandson.” Wang Naiyun nodded in surprise. Finally, someone saw her grandson with Song Yinhua. “Song Yinhua is dating my husband Zhiyuan. She offered to take my grandson home to take care of him and cultivate their relationship. She said she would be a good stepmother after we get married.”

The villagers finally saw through Wang Naiyun's lie.

"Sister-in-law, I don't know if Yinhua is dating your son, but I did see a three or four-year-old child running over to Erzhuang's house seven or eight days ago. The child was dressed in dirty clothes and called Caixing 'Mom'."

That night, Yinhua and Caixing, who was holding a baby, passed by my house. I even asked the child whose child it was!

"Yinhua said that they didn't know where the child came from. When they asked who the child's parents were, the child was only three years old and couldn't say anything. So they were going to take the child to the village chief's house and ask the village to broadcast a message to help the child find his parents. In the end, his parents took him back."

"They took him back?" Wang Naiyun was stunned. Her son hadn't taken her eldest grandson back. Could it be that her ex-daughter-in-law, who stole her money and ran away, took her eldest grandson back?

Wang Naiyun quickly picked all the cucumbers, then pulled up a lot of other vegetables. She went inside, found a burlap sack, and filled it with cucumbers, greens, eggplants, and newly sprouted garlic shoots, carrying it away.

At the health center, Song Yinhua ran around paying various fees and only returned to her ward after getting her medicine.

Song Caixing followed closely behind her.

Qiao Guilan, who was with her son in the ward, could only cry and kept wiping away tears, which annoyed Song Baogen.

He's been voluntarily working overtime every day lately to earn more money, but his parents kept arguing until midnight last night, so he didn't sleep well. His mind has been a bit muddled all day today. He forgot to clamp the product on the chuck before starting the machine, and as a result, the product fell and injured his toe.

"Mom, I won't die, please stop crying, okay?" Song Baogen said irritably.

"Pah! Pah! Pah! What nonsense are you spouting? You're my only son. I'll be counting on you to take care of me when I'm old. What will I do if something happens to you?" Seeing the bandage on her son's foot, Qiao Guilan felt extremely distressed. "Is the injury serious? It must hurt a lot. How did you get injured like this? Will you become disabled?"

"No, the doctor said I'll recover in less than a month and live like a normal person. I won't be disabled." Song Baogen didn't want his mother to worry, so he spoke very casually.

Qiao Guilan was relieved and then started nagging her son about how her uncle had promised to bring the money himself today but hadn't. She also mentioned that when she learned he was injured and hospitalized, she asked Hanwen to take him by motorcycle. Hanwen had already brought out his motorcycle when Tang Suxiang stopped him.

Song Baogen wasn't surprised at all. "Mom, don't you like helping them with chores and taking care of their kids? You should help them with chores and be their maid more often in the future!"

"Why are you talking to your mother like that? I'm just thinking that since they're relatives and neighbors from the same village, and they asked you for help, I'll help them out. Your father didn't say anything."

Qiao Guilan felt wronged. She had given so much, but in the end, the neighbors and relatives she helped didn't appreciate it, and even her own children disliked her.

Thinking about how hard she had worked but was still not appreciated, Qiao Guilan started wiping away tears again, muttering that she had a miserable life.

After Song Yinhua received the medicine, she went into the ward.

"Mom, the doctor said Baogen's foot needs surgery, and asked our family to prepare 300 yuan for the surgery fee, and then arrange the surgery."

Qiao Guilan was a little confused, "I need surgery? Your brother said it's nothing serious, he'll recover in less than a month?!"

Standing behind Song Yinhua, Song Caixing said, "The doctor said that my second brother's foot must be operated on, otherwise he may be disabled."

Upon hearing the words "disabled," Qiao Guilan nearly fainted.

Her healthy son is going to become disabled.

How could she possibly stand it?

She hugged her son Baogen and cried.

Song Baogen complained to Song Caixing, "Why are you telling Mom all this?"

Standing behind Song Yinhua, Song Caixing also harbored many grievances, especially towards her parents, with a belly full of resentment and dissatisfaction.

The door to the health center was suddenly pushed open, and Song Erzhuang rushed in, his loud, rough voice startling the other hospitalized patients.

"What's wrong? Baogen, how are you? What happened?"

When he got home from work, the house was dark, the vegetables in the garden in front of the door had been pulled up in a mess, and there were footprints everywhere. He thought his house had been burgled, but after asking around, he found out that his son had had an accident.

Qiao Guilan grabbed Song Erzhuang's arm and cried, "The doctor said Baogen needs surgery, which costs 300 yuan. If he doesn't have the surgery, he will become disabled."

"Then let's forget about the bride price for now and use the money for Baogen's surgery."

"Where did the money come from? Do we have any money left?" Qiao Guilan asked, crying.

"Didn't my older brother bring any money today?"
