Chapter 1: Future in-laws demand to buy a house

As the sun sets, a wisp of evening glow remains on the horizon.

Shuangdong Hutong is bustling with activity at its busiest time of day, with children leaving school, workers getting off work, and housewives coming home to cook.

Old Chang parted ways with his chess partner and slowly walked home with his hands behind his back.

Old Chang has three daughters-in-law, but he can only envy his chess friends who can go home and eat as soon as they get home. Thinking about his own situation, he sighs with regret.

I can't enjoy any more blessings, I just want some peace and quiet...

"Grandpa, something terrible has happened! My mom has gone mad!"

Old Man Chang's eyelids twitched as he watched his granddaughter rushing over with a worried expression.

He hurriedly asked, "What's wrong with your mother? Did she write a letter to scold your father, or did she scold your uncle's family over some trivial matter, or is she feeling unwell and insisting on quitting her job?"

The daughters-in-law of the Chang family are all very capable, but the most capable of them all is Zhou Hongyu, the second daughter-in-law of the Chang family.

This is someone no one dares to mess with.

"My mom is going to beat my older brother to death!"

"What!"

Old Man Chang quickened his pace: "Tell me as we walk, what happened!"

"My older brother said that Minjun's family was demanding that we buy a house so that we could move out after we got our marriage certificate. That angered my mother, and she grabbed a kitchen knife and tried to chop my older brother up!"

The Chang family lived in a detached house with their own courtyard, and their housing conditions were quite good.

Is my future granddaughter-in-law's family demanding that I buy a house?

Everything was settled with her in-laws, and they were just a few days away from getting their marriage certificate when they suddenly made an unreasonable demand. Zhou Hongyu had no money, so she couldn't possibly agree.

When the two returned home, a group of neighbors who had come to watch the commotion were waiting at the door. The neighbors greeted Old Man Chang with smiles as he returned.

"Hey, you're back! Your wife is a real tigress, always yelling and fighting. I really don't feel like I'm not around when she's not here!"

Old Chang gave a forced smile. Although everyone knew about it, being made a joke about in public was something he couldn't help but feel uncomfortable about, no matter how easygoing he was.

"Chang Pengfei, you want to buy a house? What kind of house are you going to buy! You have mountains of gold and silver! Too much money is a burden! There's no place for you to live in the house!"

"Oh, what a precious new bride! She hasn't even entered the house yet and she's already trying to steal my son away. Which of your grandfather's sons isn't by his side to take care of him? You're so capable, kicking me to the curb right now. Don't expect me to take care of you in your old age!"

In the courtyard, Zhou Hongyu had already thrown aside the kitchen knife she had taken out to scare people, and was now chasing after Chang Pengfei with a broom, beating him mercilessly.

It makes a popping sound.

They hit very hard.

Old Man Chang clutched his chest, both angry and furious. No matter how angry he was, there was no need to beat his grandson so badly!

Because the second son, Chang Xingwang, was transferred to a remote area to work on construction not long after his marriage, he has returned home very rarely in recent years. As the parents-in-law, he and his wife always go along with the second son's wife, Zhou Hongyu.

This time, they went too far!

"week……"

"ah!"

"mom!"

"mom!!!"

Chang Pengfei suddenly crouched down and covered his head at the corner, dodging a heavy blow from behind.

Unable to control her strength, Zhou Hongyu missed her target, twisted her ankle, and fell headfirst to the ground.

...

He—

After an unknown amount of time, Zhou Hongyu woke up from a nightmare and sat stiffly on the bed.

Was I dreaming?

Or did she die once?

The film's bizarre and fantastical plot is crammed in all at once, and the familiar people and events create a feeling that this is real.

At the end of the nightmare, towering buildings stood tall, all of which were landscapes I had never seen before.

Her four children, their faces now decades older, stood arguing beside a dilapidated wall.

The noise was so loud that Zhou Hongyu's head was buzzing, and she couldn't hear a word they were saying.

Turning around again, in the narrow, dark alley, she was rummaging through the trash cans, her hair disheveled and her face dirty.

Groups of rats that had been soaking in the water, the vulgar words of a lone drunkard, and the filthy water exposed on the ground, emitting a foul stench.

The dim yellow light swayed in the wind, creating an extremely desolate scene.

Not far away, in a corner, clothes were piled up next to a makeshift shelter made of cardboard—it was truly appalling!

suffer hunger and cold……

Then she woke up.

A gentle breeze stirred the floral-patterned curtains. Zhou Hongyu stared at the family photo on the wall, lost in thought for a long time.

The family photo was taken when my husband, Chang Xingwang, came back last time.

Two adults and three babies, with the youngest daughter still in the womb.

Zhou Hongyu and Chang Xingwang were sulking, their arms awkwardly separated by a small gap. Zhou Hongyu mischievously stepped on Chang Xingwang's leather shoes with the tip of her shoe.

Chang Xingwang stood tall and straight, rarely smiling, on the far side with his arms outstretched towards his wife and children, looking every bit like a guardian deity.

The eldest son followed suit, his youthful face lacking a certain imposing presence, and placed his hands wide open on his younger siblings' shoulders.

The second son was all smiles, exuding confidence and charisma.

The eldest daughter chuckled and leaned closer to Zhou Hongyu, affectionately linking arms and holding hands.

As Zhou Hongyu recalled the nightmare, she felt even worse than if she had swallowed a fly.

Can things in dreams really come true?

The eldest son forgot his mother after getting married. He was pampered like a grandson by his daughter-in-law's family and foolishly tried to take advantage of his own family to please his daughter-in-law's family.

The second son is unconventional and squanders his potential. He misjudges people, is clingy and persistent, which leads to his beloved leaving him. He then spends his days drinking and numbing himself.

The eldest daughter is weak and indecisive, and has lived most of her life in a daze, easily manipulated by anyone.

The youngest daughter was unruly and reckless in her youth, which earned her a bad reputation and made her look down on by others, causing her to become depressed.

These four unfilial sons will only let her end up on the streets, scavenging for a living! What a suffocating dream!

"Mom, dinner's ready!"

The youngest daughter, Chang Meiying, hummed a little tune as she pushed open the door. She had two braids and looked playful and cute.

Zhou Hongyu turned her head and looked at her playful and cute little daughter in front of her. She was stunned when she thought of how her daughter always seemed listless after the accident in her dream.

"Mom, dinner's ready!" Chang Meiying called out loudly.

To hide her embarrassment, Zhou Hongyu got up and dressed, casually changing the subject, and asked, "Where's your older brother?"

"My older brother went out. He said he wouldn't come back unless Mom agreed!"

As Zhou Hongyu loosened her grip on the buttons, the expression on her face was even more unpleasant than if she had cried.

It's exactly the same!

The eldest son, Chang Pengfei, had found a girlfriend, but as they were about to get married, all sorts of troubles arose. They had a dispute over buying a house, which caused him to become estranged from his family. Later, he even wanted to run away and become his mother-in-law's biological son, moving all the family's belongings out of the house!

Zhou Hongyu was about to vomit blood!

Although she made a big fuss about buying the house, the truth is that the Chang family paid for it.

The grandparents, feeling sorry for their grandson, secretly gave him their savings for his funeral.

Then the Chang family was thrown into turmoil because of this money.

Her eldest son was a freeloader, taking things without asking for anything in return. He moved all the family's belongings out of the house and eagerly went to be his mother-in-law's son. Zhou Hongyu wished she had never given birth to this eldest son!

etc.

The matter in her dream wasn't over yet; should she check the situation again?

Is she some kind of deity who can predict the future just by having a dream? Pshaw!

Who has such amazing abilities that they only know they'll be unlucky in the future?

Zhou Hongyu refused to believe this superstition, got out of bed, and put on her shoes.

He washed his face with hot water in the basin, ruffled his messy hair a few times, and said proudly, "Mei-ying, let's go eat!"
