Chang Meiying is growing to like this older sister more and more.
Granny Chang prepared the meal, and Chang Meiying followed her around happily, helping to fetch the bowls and chopsticks.
Chen Lijuan had just sat down and picked up her chopsticks when there was a knock on the door.
Chang Meiying ran to open the door with her short legs, thinking it was her grandfather returning. But when she opened it, she found another person she disliked.
Second Aunt Chang Meihua.
"Mom and Dad, are you home?"
Chang Meihua ignored Chang Meiying and walked towards the courtyard with a smile.
Chang Meiying closed the door behind her, pouted, and said, "Second Auntie is annoying!"
When Granny Chang saw that she was carrying a basket, she quickly came over and took it from her: "Meihua, what else did you bring back to your parents' home? Here, give it to your mother, don't tire yourself out!"
However, the basket seemed empty; it felt light and flimsy.
Granny Chang didn't care much; she was overjoyed just to see her second daughter, and thus made a slip of the tongue.
"If you had come back earlier, you might have run into your older sister, she..."
She was beaten so badly by Chen Zhaodi that she ran home!
Upon realizing this, Granny Chang suddenly looked embarrassed and couldn't finish her sentence.
Chang Meihua patted Granny Chang's hand and laughed, "I saw Eldest Sister on the way here. She ran faster than anyone else, and we couldn't stop her no matter how much we called!"
Actually, that's not the case.
When Chang Lanhua saw her, she was still standing by the roadside with a pig-like face, cursing all the guys with the surname Chen.
Chang Meihua had her own business to attend to when she made a special trip back to her parents' home. She didn't want to drag Chang Lanhua into it and waste her breath, lest her parents' attention be diverted to Chang Lanhua.
These two are truly sisters, so selfish by nature!
Chang Meihua called out to Chen Zhaodi: "Sister-in-law, come over and listen, what we're about to say is related to Huaying!"
When the leader was choosing a daughter-in-law, Chang Meihua took the initiative to mention the personal qualities of her niece, Chang Huaying. The leader was very satisfied and sent her back to communicate with the girl's parents. Soon after, they went to propose marriage.
Chen Zhaodi walked over curiously.
Chang Meihua took out a piece of paper from her pocket, on which were written down the man's various conditions.
Chen Zhaodi immediately guessed her intention: "Meihua, you've changed careers and become a matchmaker!"
Chang Meihua's eyes turned slightly cold. If Chen Zhaodi hadn't been useful, she would have almost turned pale on the spot. She cleared her throat and said, "Listen to me first!"
Chen Zhaodi obediently shut her mouth; she had to please the matchmaker!
Before she passed away, she had to find a reliable support for her two children, her eldest son Chang Yaozu and her youngest daughter Chang Huaying, for the rest of their lives.
Chang Meihua read aloud the words on the note: "Lin Jun, male, 26 years old, 1.7 meters tall, only son..."
Chen Zhaodi was slapped in the face. Upon hearing the age, she couldn't help but interrupt: "Twenty-six is too old. My Huaying just turned eighteen this year!"
Chang Meihua glared at her and said, "Only the elderly can be so caring!"
Chen Zhaodi was also dissatisfied with the height: "How tall is 1.7 meters? My Huaying is already 1.68 meters tall. We don't look good together!"
"If all other conditions are good, height is not an issue!"
"Then tell me quickly what his family is like!"
Chang Meihua continued reading: "The groom's mother is my direct superior, the groom's father is the deputy director of the grain bureau, and all his relatives are related to the grain industry. Once your Huaying marries into the family, you won't have to worry about food and drink!"
After finishing a large bowl of noodles, Chen Lijuan looked up in response.
grain!
She must be there!
Chen Lijuan steeled herself, looked away from the pickled vegetables on the table, wiped her greasy mouth, and got up to go over.
Chang Meiying enthusiastically followed in her footprints, playing as she walked.
As Chen Zhaodi was considering the man's family background, she suddenly felt someone leaning on her, and Chen Lijuan smiled and put her arm around her shoulder.
Chen Zhaodi withdrew her gaze and turned to Chang Meihua, criticizing, "This isn't an era of food shortages anymore. It's not unusual for someone in the family to have a job with a grain allowance. Instead of saying so much, why don't you talk about the man himself, like his job, appearance, temperament..."
Chang Meihua was unhappy: "Our Huaying isn't a vain girl. She just wants someone who can eat his fill. Being too picky will make it hard for her to get married!"
Chen Zhaodi shut her mouth. She was particularly sensitive about such things, and the moment she heard that someone couldn't get married, all her complaints vanished without a trace.
Chang Meihua was satisfied: "In that case, let's arrange a time for the man to come and propose marriage!"
A marriage proposal in person?
Everyone was taken aback by her sudden words. Blind marriages are not a feudal society.
Chang Meihua clapped her hands and pretended to be kind: "If you meet someone suitable, you should get married as soon as possible, otherwise you won't even have a chance!"
Chen Zhaodi actually found this statement to be reasonable.
She's been worried about Huaying's marriage for a long time, and if she had the means, she could even pack Huaying up and send her straight to the bridal chamber.
"Wait!"
Chang Meiying looked up at her grandmother, still confused, waiting to hear what Granny Chang had to say.
Granny Chang asked with a serious expression, "Plum Blossom, does this Lin Jun live in Cat Alley?"
Chang Meihua swallowed and nodded. If she refused to admit it, Granny Chang would find out eventually. She was betting that Granny Chang didn't know anything about the man's situation.
Unfortunately, Granny Chang frowned and said, "This person won't do!"
"Mom!" Chang Meihua spoke up for the outsider: "It's rare for an ordinary family like ours to find such a good son-in-law. If we miss this opportunity, it will be hard to find another one like this in the future!"
Granny Chang was extremely angry: "Meihua, you've been fooled! This Lin Jun has been married twice!"
"The first time, before he was old enough, he had a child with one of his high school classmates. His first wife gave birth to a daughter, and his family treated her badly. In the end, she took the child and went back to her parents' home to remarry!"
"The second time he married a girl from out of town, his second wife stayed at his house for more than half a year, but she couldn't stand it anymore and left!"
These are things that Granny Chang and Chang Meiying usually learned by gossiping with the neighbors in the corner of the wall.
Granny Chang became more and more agitated as she spoke: "Lin Jun and his mother are so close that they sleep in the same bed at night. I heard he wasn't weaned until junior high school. It's so embarrassing! We absolutely cannot introduce someone like that to our Hua Ying!"
An impatience flashed in Chang Meihua's eyes. I understand! I understand!
I know these things better than anyone!
But I didn't say I was on anyone's side!
Upon hearing this, Chen Zhaodi jumped back immediately: "Don't introduce this thrice-married man to our Huaying!"
Out of spite, Chang Meihua grabbed the hand of a girl next to Chen Zhaodi.
"If the family members of high-ranking officials didn't have a few flaws, we girls from ordinary families wouldn't even have a chance. Do you really think everyone is Liu Yujie, with the sons of big leaders begging to come knocking on our door?"
"Look, if you're not happy, I'll ask someone else. Little girl, why don't you give it a try?"
She didn't even know who this person was, but she wanted to use this to keep Chen Zhaodi in suspense, since anyone who snatched it would think it was something valuable.
Chen Lijuan nodded earnestly: "I do!"
Grain = enough to eat and drink for a lifetime!
