While the family was discussing whether their fourth child should go to school, Li Xiuying took the opportunity to sneak into the house.
"Zhengzi, I've come to see you."
Li Xiuying, with a fawning smile plastered on her face, her face crinkled with wrinkles, walked towards their dining table carrying a basket of some unknown object.
She looked like she had dressed up specially; the clothes she was wearing were different from those she wore when she was in the brigade.
My hair has been combed.
But she looked much older. Even after changing into neat clothes and combing her hair, she still couldn't hide her old age. Her hair, hanging down her back, was dry and looked like a handful of straw.
"Woof woof woof—"
The coal ball cried out even louder, arched its body, gripped the ground with its front paws, and made whimpering noises, ready to launch itself at any moment to bite Li Xiuying.
If Li Xiuying gets close to anyone in the house, it will rush out.
Li Xiuying indeed dared not go any further.
The Coal Ball of today is no longer the little pup it used to be. It's a dog that's about knee-high to an adult, baring its teeth and tearing off a chunk of flesh with a single bite. Just looking at it makes your legs tremble.
Li Xiuying dared not take another step forward, glared at the dog, and said, "You blind beast!"
Then she looked at Qin Zheng and Ye Yun with a smile, as if nothing had happened, and praised, "Zhengzi, you have a really good dog. Look how fierce it is, it must be a great guard dog!"
Qin Zheng: "..."
Ye Yun: "..."
Qin Xiang'e and the Fourth Brother: "..."
The old woman, holding her bowl, spat at Li Xiuying and yelled, "Tui!"
Li Xiuying's face turned slightly pale.
But she has to suppress her anger now and can't afford to break ties with Qin Zheng. She's still hoping he'll take her to the city to enjoy a better life.
Li Xiuying may not have much else, but she is thick-skinned. Having not tasted meat for several months, she stared longingly at the stewed chicken on the table, her mouth watering.
"Zhengzi, Mother hasn't eaten yet, why don't we eat together?" She looked at Qin Zheng with feigned kindness as she spoke.
In the past, she would have just plopped down on it.
But without Qin Zheng's approval, she dared not make any rash moves, after all, a black dog was still watching her intently.
Li Xiuying thought to herself, "That blind beast, I'll poison him to death one day!"
"Coal briquettes, get them!"
Suddenly, Qin Zheng let out a low shout.
"Woof—" Coal Ball, instantly receiving the command, took a step back and charged fiercely towards Li Xiuying like an arrow!
Li Xiuying was terrified.
"Zhengzi—"
The fierce dog face of Coal Ball had already magnified in her pupils, scaring her so much that she turned around and ran away, tripping and stumbling.
"Zhengzi! What do you mean by this?!"
Li Xiuying ran out of the yard in a panic, and quickly slammed the fence gate shut, blocking the coal ball that was lunging at her.
Not to be outdone, the coal ball leaned over the fence and barked at her.
Li Xiuying spat at the dog, furious, and shouted at Qin Zheng across the yard, "Zhengzi! Have you gone mad? You actually let the dog bite your own mother!"
Qin Zheng finally glanced at her.
That glance was devoid of any emotion, yet filled with indifference, unfamiliarity, and perhaps even a hint of sharpness.
That look made Li Xiuying's emotions falter, and her hand gripping the fence gate trembled slightly, but she still coaxed, "Zhengzi, hurry up and send the dog back. Tell it that I am its mother, its owner, and that it shouldn't bite me. I am its mother."
Qin Zheng suddenly scoffed.
A mocking glint appeared in his eyes as he spoke clearly and deliberately, "First, you are not my mother, you have nothing to do with me. Second, Coal Ball doesn't like ruthless people. Don't think it doesn't know what you were thinking. You're not worthy to be its master."
"If you don't leave now, do you believe it won't jump over and bite you to death!"
These words sent a shiver down Li Xiuying's spine.
Li Xiuying subconsciously glanced at the height of the fence gate. How could a fence gate that was only half a person's height possibly be a challenge for a dog that spends all day jumping around in the mountains?
Inside the door, the coal ball gradually lowered its body.
A pair of fierce eyes scrutinized the fence gate, its front paws twitching restlessly, and it suddenly leaped up!
He rushed towards Li Xiuying behind the door!
"ah--"
The dog's paw suddenly lunged at Li Xiuying's shoulder. Before Li Xiuying could even dodge, the dog's paw tore her clothes to shreds, and she was knocked to the ground by the dog.
The coal ball opened its mouth and bit her face.
Li Xiuying screamed in terror, shoved the coal ball aside, and fled down the slope in a panic.
The basket fell to the ground.
The fruit splattered all over the ground, rolling down the slope at a speed that couldn't even keep up with Li Xiuying's escape.
Coal Ball stopped chasing and stood guard at the door, barking at Li Xiuying's retreating figure.
Qin Zheng shouted, "Coal ball!"
The coal briquette then stopped making noise.
Bathed in the glow of the setting sun, the puppy held its head high, chin held high, and stood proudly on the slope, as proud as a victorious rooster.
"Coal ball, you're back!"
Ye Yun called out.
The coal ball wagged its tail instantly, easily leaped over the fence gate, and trotted happily toward the dining table.
Ye Yun picked up a piece of chicken neck.
Coal Ball's eyes lit up, its dark pupils staring intently at Ye Yun's chopsticks, its head tilted, and its little tail wagging so hard it almost took off.
Ye Yun chuckled and tossed the chicken neck off her chopsticks toward it.
The chicken's neck traced an arc in the air, and with a sudden burst of energy, Coal Ball leaped and precisely caught the chicken's neck.
"Woof..."
The rewarded coal briquette lay down on the ground and began to chew on the chicken neck with relish, making a crunching sound as it chewed the bone.
