Luo Xiujuan, standing motionless inside the window, stared at Ye Yun eating the sugar bun, or rather, at the sugar bun itself.
Although a bowl of millet porridge relieved her hunger, she hadn't eaten noodles in a long time and couldn't resist the sweet aroma of steamed buns. The deep-seated hunger made her mouth water like a flood.
But a bowl of millet porridge is enough.
Ye Yun had already given her 10,000 cups of tea and even hired a doctor to treat her son. How could she possibly have the nerve to covet the candy packet in someone else's hand?
She had to find a way to repay Ye Yun's kindness, even just for that bowl of noodle soup and her son's medicine.
Thinking of this, Luo Xiujuan decisively lowered the window. If she couldn't control her hunger, she might as well not look at it, so as not to let Ye Yun misunderstand her as a greedy person.
Although Luo Xiujuan was very hungry, she still clearly knew where her principles of conduct lay.
The window was gently closed. Even though the person closing the window moved very quietly, it still made a slight noise, causing the people in the yard to cast surprised glances at each other.
Aunt Tian asked in surprise, lowering her voice first, "Zhengzi's wife, that woman is awake?"
Ye Yun nodded.
"How did it go?" Aunt Tian asked curiously, wondering if the man had become attached to Ye Yun.
Ye Yun twitched her lips and chuckled softly, "It's nothing, it's just that her home is quite far from here, and she came here begging for food. Her son hasn't woken up yet, so let her stay here for now."
Aunt Tian nodded and remained silent.
I thought there would be a good show to watch, but to my surprise, both the other party and Ye Yun were quite calm.
Qin Xiang'e turned her gaze from the window to Ye Yun, her tone tinged with worry, "She has a child with her? Is the child sick? How come they're sleeping in your and Qin Zheng's room? What if they make you sick? If you want to take them in, why don't you have them move to my and the old lady's room?"
She asked several questions in a row; she was genuinely worried.
Ye Yun shook her head. "Let's leave it at that."
They're already asleep. If the child's illness is contagious, moving them now won't help.
Aunt Tian left after delivering the candy packets.
Qin Xiang'e put the remaining sugar packets into the steamed bun basket, looked around the yard, but didn't see Qin Zheng.
"What's Zhengzi up to now, not home in the middle of the day?" Qin Xiang'e clicked her tongue, pumped water, and started cooking with the bucket clattering around.
Ye Yun didn't know either.
When Qin Zheng asked her what she wanted to eat, she couldn't give a clear answer. After thinking for a moment, she casually replied, "I have no appetite."
"No appetite?"
Seeing her troubled, Qin Zheng thought for a couple of seconds and then suddenly smiled at her as if he had thought of something. "Wife, I'll go find you something that will give you an appetite."
He left before Ye Yun could reply.
And yet, they haven't come back yet.
Ye Yun didn't know what Qin Zheng was looking for, and seeing Qin Xiang'e muttering about Qin Zheng, she didn't say anything more.
Just then, a divine eagle rushed out of the main room, staggering.
"Auntie, let me do it."
With a look of urgency on her face, Luo Xiujuan eagerly snatched the bucket from Qin Xiang'e's hand and staggered into the kitchen shed.
Clearly, she hadn't recovered her strength; she even stumbled when she entered the kitchen shed because of the water buckets.
This left Qin Xiang'e stunned.
Qin Xiang'e stared in disbelief at the sudden appearance of Luo Xiujuan, and couldn't help but look at Ye Yun with a puzzled expression. What did this mean?
Ye Yun shrugged.
She gave Luo Xiujuan a look, implying that it was good to have someone help with the work.
As if she were living under someone else's roof in their home, Luo Xiujuan was afraid of offending Ye Yun and Qin Xiang'e, so she quickly added water to the pot, one ladle at a time, and she didn't stop after adding three ladles.
"Enough! Enough!"
The commotion startled Qin Xiang'e, who quickly stepped forward and snatched the water ladle from her hand.
"There aren't many people in our family, three ladles are enough."
Qin Xiang'e dared not let Luo Xiujuan do anything more, and told her to rest, while she hurriedly started cooking.
Luo Xiujuan stood helplessly by the side watching Qin Xiang'e busy herself. She clenched her fingers and bravely raised her voice, saying, "Auntie, please don't look down on me. I often cook at home. I can help. You've given me food and even asked the doctor to treat my son. Please let me do some work!"
Otherwise, she wouldn't feel at ease.
Qin Xiang'e thought for a moment, and finally turned her questioning gaze to Ye Yun.
Ye Yun remained noncommittal.
Qin Xiang'e turned her head to look at Luo Xiujuan again. The girl was looking at her eagerly, as if afraid that she wouldn't be allowed to work. She finally sighed, "You look very weak. What kind of work can you do in the fields? Why don't you just sit here and help me with the fire? Don't do anything else."
Luo Xiujuan was overjoyed, "Great!"
As soon as she finished speaking, she conveniently sat down on the small stool in front of the stove, stuffed the twigs into the pot, and then stuffed in a few flammable straws. She slid a match lightly across the matchbox, and the small flame easily ignited the straws. She then stuffed the straws into the pot, and a bright flame instantly ignited at the bottom of the pot.
Qin Xiang'e, who was washing rice, was relieved to see this.
She's really a capable worker.
He's hardworking and quick-witted, but I don't know why he ended up begging for food.
Qin Xiang'e was puzzled, but she naturally asked, "Sister, which village are you from? I've never seen you before?"
“I…” Luo Xiujuan lowered her head, “My home is very far from here, separated by two small hills.”
"Ah?" Qin Xiang'e was surprised and looked her up and down in astonishment. A hint of sympathy appeared in her eyes. "No wonder I've never seen you before. Did you cross two mountains with your child to get here? You look pretty good and you're quite nimble. Why are you begging with your child?"
Luo Xiujuan wanted to explain, but she immediately shut her mouth when she saw Ye Yun in the yard.
Ye Yun didn't want to hear about her experiences and future plans, and she wouldn't talk about them again.
"Alright, it's fine if you don't want to talk about it. People should always look forward. Let bygones be bygones." Qin Xiang'e didn't care about her attitude and waved her hand with a smile.
The girl in front of me didn't look like the kind of beggar who only knew how to beg for food, so she was nice to me.
Once the rice was in the pot and the steamed buns were steaming, Qin Xiang'e put the lid on and let Luo Xiujuan cook slowly. She turned around and took out a bag of green apples that she had bought from the roadside on her way back from the tricycle, and cleaned them with water from the well.
Peeled and pitted, it was cut into small, bite-sized pieces and served to Ye Yun.
Ye Yun had already entered the house.
The child lying on the kang (a heated brick bed) let out a faint, painful whimper, which she happened to hear.
"Mother...mother..."
The child's eyes were tightly closed, his brow furrowed, and he uttered painful murmurs as if he were having a nightmare.
Because of the fever reducer, his forehead was covered in sweat, which also made his messy long hair stick to his face. When Ye Yun touched his forehead to check his temperature, she inevitably got her hand wet with sweat.
Ye Yun wrung out a damp towel, intending to wipe the sweat from his forehead.
Suddenly the child opened his eyes.
