The old lady insisted that Ye Yun go back to her room to rest. Ye Yun couldn't refuse, and she couldn't reason with an old lady who had good intentions. So she asked Aunt Tian to move the mother and son, who had fallen into a coma, into the room and place them on her and Qin Zheng's kang (heated brick bed).
The inner room had only a small window, making it dimly lit and somewhat cramped when there were many people.
Ye Yun climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed), passed over the mother and son, and pushed open the small window that was originally half open. The cool autumn breeze rushed into the room in an instant, and the cool breeze that rushed in quickly dispelled the darkness and stuffiness in the room.
"Why does this child have such a high fever?"
Aunt Tian touched the child's forehead, and the burning temperature made her withdraw her hand in concern.
Ye Yun simply filled a basin with cold water, soaked a towel in it, wrung it out, and placed it on the child's forehead. Then she touched the woman's forehead.
Fortunately, the woman did not have a fever; she simply fainted from hunger.
"His wife, do you know your son and his wife?" Aunt Tian asked worriedly, looking at the child's flushed face. "This child is so sick, won't he become mentally impaired? What if he really does become mentally impaired and then his wife and son cling to you?"
Ye Yun's brow twitched slightly as her gaze slowly fell upon the woman.
She didn't think that much about it.
A woman who is starving to death, a woman begging for food while carrying a child with a high fever and unconscious, should not be capable of extorting money. If she were a bad person, would she have fallen to this level?
Qin Zheng quickly summoned a barefoot doctor.
The old man was slow on his feet, so Qin Zheng rode his old bicycle into the yard. The old man, with his frail body, got off the bicycle, carried his wooden medicine box, and walked into the house with a limp.
Lift the woman's eyelids.
Then he examined the child's eyelids again.
He took the woman's pulse, pondered for a moment, then took the child's pulse, and pondered again. His aged eyelids drooped, his cloudy eyes squinted, and he stroked his white goatee, as if carefully sensing the pulse.
Five or six seconds later, he withdrew his hand.
"It's nothing serious, he's just hungry, he won't die, he'll recover with rest. The child is a bit more seriously injured, he has a fever. I'll prescribe some medicine, he'll be fine after taking it." The old man's voice was hoarse and aged, but his words were concise. He opened his medicine box and rummaged through the bottles and jars, pulling out a few white pills.
With a snap, the pill split in two.
There were three pills in total, which were broken into six pieces. The old man found a piece of paper to place the pills on the kang (a heated brick bed). "Take this twice a day, half a pill each time. You'll be fully recovered in three days."
Is this the only type of medicine?
Ye Yun and Qin Zheng exchanged bewildered glances, while Aunt Tian also looked puzzled. "Uncle Wang, is this one kind of medicine really enough?"
Old Master Wang scoffed, "This isn't anything special, how much more do you want to eat?"
"No, what I mean is, what if the medicine doesn't work?" Aunt Tian explained with a smile, pointing to the child on the kang who was still unconscious from the high fever. "I think this little kid is quite sick. If he doesn't get better, what if he clings to Zhengzi and his wife?"
Since Qin Xiang'e wasn't home, she, as the neighbor aunt, had to help the young couple.
Besides, her daughter Tian Xiaohui is now working for Ye Yun and earns so much money every month, so naturally she has to protect Ye Yun.
"Don't worry about these things. This is fever reducer, half a pill is enough, it's very strong." The old man smiled kindly and waved his hand to tell her not to worry anymore. He closed the medicine box, propped himself up with his old bones, and left.
Seeing this, Qin Zheng got up and walked outside with him, saying, "I'll take you home."
The old man has difficulty walking, so it wasn't easy for him to come all this way. Since he invited the person here, he naturally has to take responsibility for sending them back.
As soon as Qin Zheng left, Aunt Tian curiously picked up the pill on the kang (a heated brick bed) and looked at it from left to right, wondering how such a simple little pill could work.
Whether it works or not, you'll only know after you try it.
However, Mr. Wang has been practicing medicine in Xingyi for so many years, and his medical skills are evident to all.
There's a reason why certain medications are prescribed.
Moreover, the medicines of this era have higher concentrations and stronger effects, unlike the fancy medicines of later generations where a simple cold requires several kinds of medicine mixed together, including granules and capsules, and even then, they don't necessarily improve the condition much.
"Alright, Zhengzi's wife, you go ahead with your work. I'm still steaming some buns at home, I have to go back and open the pot. I'll bring you two later."
Aunt Tian finished speaking and left in a hurry.
Thanks to Ye Yun, Tian Xiaohui now lives a comfortable life. Half of the wages Tian Xiaohui earns working under Ye Yun are given to her, which has improved their family's situation and allowed them to eat white flour buns every meal.
Aunt Tian felt increasingly pleased with herself as she left, humming a carefree tune.
Inside the house, Ye Yun was feeding the child medicine.
The child looked no more than five or six years old, but he was frighteningly thin. When Ye Yun lifted his upper body to feed him medicine, she felt as if she were hugging a skeleton, which made her arm ache slightly.
The pill was stuffed into his mouth.
The child, who had fallen into a deep sleep, showed almost no resistance. Perhaps because he was already hungry and thirsty, he swallowed the bitter pills and warm water automatically when they entered his mouth.
Given his poor condition, Ye Yun silently fed him the entire glass of warm water.
After doing all this, a thin layer of sweat appeared on the child's forehead. Ye Yun wiped it with a towel and was about to put him back in bed when a hoarse, weak voice suddenly rang out beside her.
"Th-thank you..."
Ye Yun's fingertips trembled, and when she looked up, she saw the woman on the kang who had opened her eyes at some point.
Damn, I scared her half to death.
"You're awake."
Ye Yun remained calm as she gently placed the child back in bed and tucked him in.
"Your son has a fever. The doctor just came and prescribed some fever reducers for him. He said he'll be fully recovered after three days. Is this your son?" Ye Yun added, looking at her thin figure.
