Chapter 89 Talking to Oneself
The pot of bone broth sat in the center of the table, its rich aroma constantly tempting one's appetite.
Lu Zhongshun stared at the soup bowl, his gaze fixed on the large bones.
He thought to himself: It would be best if no one dared to drink it. After they finished eating and left, the rest would be mine.
Thinking of this, the corners of his mouth curled up slightly.
But he immediately suppressed it, afraid that others would find out what he was up to.
But things didn't go as he expected.
Lu Fuquan finished eating the rice in his bowl in two bites and then started ladling soup.
But he didn't dare pick up any big bones, he just picked up a few pieces of meat.
Lu Guilin looked up.
When he saw that even Lu Fuquan, who usually dislikes drinking soup, had picked up his bowl and started drinking, how could he possibly sit still?
He quickly finished eating the rice in his bowl and started ladling out the soup.
He knew that he was much more seriously injured than Lu Fuquan.
Lu Guilin poked a ladle into the pot and stirred it vigorously, only to hit a hard object.
Prying it down further, they actually pulled out a thick bone.
"That's so inconsiderate!"
He couldn't help but complain loudly.
"They didn't even chop the bones up! It's such a big bone, who can eat it? Even people with good teeth would have to chew it for ages, let alone the elderly and children in our family!"
Lu Guilin's tone was full of dissatisfaction.
Shen Cuifen's face darkened, and she was about to lose her temper.
But just then, there was a "poof" sound—
Lu Fuquan suddenly tilted his head back, spitting out all the hot soup in his mouth!
Lu Guilin reacted extremely quickly, leaning back sharply to narrowly avoid the oncoming soup.
But in the end, it was still a step too late—
A few drops of hot soup splashed onto the surface of his right shoe, leaving a few yellowish oil stains.
"Lu Fuquan!"
Lu Guilin suddenly stood up and shouted, pointing his finger at the other person's nose.
"You still want to fight, huh!"
As he spoke, he slammed the soup bowl down heavily on the table with a loud "bang".
Everyone felt that a major battle was about to break out.
But to everyone's surprise, Lu Fuquan did not retaliate.
Instead, he paused for a moment, revealing a slightly embarrassed expression.
"I didn't mean to... The soup was too hot. I just scooped it up and it sprayed out as soon as it touched my mouth. I'm so sorry, brother, I really didn't mean to hit you."
He paused for a moment, then quickly spoke again.
"At worst... I'll clean your shoes as an apology, okay? I promise I'll clean them thoroughly, and even take the shoelaces off and wash them."
Upon hearing this, Lu Guilin felt as if he had punched a pile of cotton.
He opened his mouth, wanting to say a few more curses.
But seeing Lu Fuquan's appearance, he couldn't bring himself to say anything harsh.
Lu Guilin snorted coldly, held his breath, and sat heavily back down on the stool.
Then he lowered his head and started shoveling rice into his mouth.
Rice splattered everywhere as he poked at it with his chopsticks, muttering under his breath, "You're smart enough... otherwise I would have beaten you to a pulp today!"
Shen Cuifen sat quietly to the side, neither speaking nor stopping them.
She took a sip of soup, then gave Lu Fuquan a meaningful look.
In that glance, there was scrutiny and suspicion.
It also carried a hint of coldness that was barely perceptible.
Lu Fuquan had a faint, wicked smile on his lips.
He seemed quite pleased with his move just now.
But when he caught a glimpse of Shen Cuifen's eyes out of the corner of his eye, he immediately felt a chill and his smile froze instantly.
He quickly lowered his head and ate his food, as if nothing had happened.
Lu Guilin, seething with anger, scooped up a large spoonful of meat soup for himself.
The soup was almost gone, with only one bone left in the bowl.
Lu Guilin was quick-witted and nimble-fingered.
With a ladle in his left hand and chopsticks in his right, he used both to scoop it up with a swift motion.
With a "splash," he scooped the bone entirely into his bowl.
"None of you are eating, right?"
As he pressed the bones into the bowl, he loudly and confidently announced.
"Then I'll eat it all! Don't try to take it from me!"
Shen Cuifen raised her eyebrows slightly, remained silent, and kept her expression indifferent.
But Li Fangfang stared intently at the bone.
"Cough cough cough—"
Seeing that his mouth was already close to the bone, Li Fangfang was so anxious that she felt like she was going to cough her lungs out.
But Lu Guilin was only thinking about his own flesh and blood; he didn't care about anyone else.
He suddenly opened his mouth and bit down hard.
A large piece of meat went into his mouth.
Looking at Lu Guilin's puffed-out cheeks, Li Fangfang felt both angry and pained.
Why doesn't this child know how to take care of himself?
She wants to eat it too...
"I...I'm full..."
Li Fangfang's voice trembled, and her tongue seemed to be tied in knots; she couldn't even utter a complete sentence.
The brazier in the room was burning brightly, but she felt a chill creep up her spine.
I was trembling uncontrollably.
When Lu Zhongshun saw that his grandmother wasn't eating, he immediately stood up from the stool.
The chopsticks tightly gripped in his hand were about to reach for that lone bone.
Shen Cuifen suddenly roared, "Lu Zhongshun! You're not allowed to touch him!"
Lu Zhongshun's hand trembled suddenly, and the chopsticks fell back into his bowl with a "thud".
His lips were pouting, and his face was full of grievance and dissatisfaction.
"You eat it!"
Shen Cuifen looked at Li Fangfang and spoke again.
"I cooked this especially for you; consider it our last meal together. Let's part amicably and go our separate ways from now on."
As soon as she finished speaking, she reached out and pushed the bowl towards Li Fangfang.
Li Fangfang panicked, her heart suddenly racing.
She quickly looked at Lu Guizhen and Lu Fuquan sitting next to her, her eyes full of pleading.
But the two of them acted as if they hadn't seen anything.
Lu Guizhen just kept her head down and ate her rice.
Lu Fuquan noticed that Shen Cuifen's gaze was off, so he simply stood up and left.
Shen Cuifen suddenly got up and walked towards the stove.
As she walked, she muttered to herself in a low voice, but it was clear to everyone.
"This kitchen knife has been used for a long time, and the blade is all kinked. It needs to be sharpened."
No sooner had he finished speaking than the sound of a knife being sharpened came from the stove.
Li Fangfang froze instantly, too afraid to move.
"Eat."
Shen Cuifen suddenly spoke up behind her.
His tone remained calm and even, but that one word startled Li Fangfang so much that she jumped.
"Mulan, I'm really full..."
Li Fangfang finally spoke, her voice barely audible and trembling so much it was almost incoherent.
This was the first time in over twenty years that Shen Cuifen had heard Li Fangfang speak to her in such a soft and gentle voice.
"Eat up, don't waste the food."
Shen Cuifen's voice became even gentler.
In the end, Lu Guizhen didn't say anything more.
After finishing his meal in silence, he got up and left the table.
Then he went straight to the pigpen to feed the pigs.
He put down his bowl, grabbed a handful of chaff, and went out of the house toward the chicken coop.
As he scattered the feed, he secretly glanced towards the pigpen.
He secretly planned in his heart: as long as he behaves more diligently and obediently in the future.
Shen Cuifen always remembered his "sensible" nature.
Maybe next time I'll be able to share some good meat with him.
He licked his chapped lips, as if he could already taste the deliciousness he had imagined.
Now only Shen Cuifen and Li Fangfang are left in the room.
The air seemed to freeze instantly, and even breathing became heavy.
