Chapter 74 Making a Living
As she spoke, she casually raised the speckled chicken she was holding high in her hand.
A drop of blood was seeping slightly from the fresh cut on the chicken's neck.
Li Fangfang squinted her cloudy eyes and stared at the dead chicken for a long time.
She felt a little more at ease and muttered to herself, "Looks like I was seeing things."
But when I think of that terrifying scene just now...
She couldn't help but grit her teeth and curse, "Shen Cuifen, that wicked woman! She actually dared to threaten me with a knife! How insidious!"
She grew angrier the more she thought about it, and her voice rose a few decibels.
The more she thought about it, the more she felt something was wrong. She was convinced that Shen Cuifen had deliberately taken out the knife to scare her, not to kill the chicken, but simply to see her make a fool of herself.
I wanted to upset her and make her anxious.
This is not how one lives.
They were clearly after her!
Upon hearing this, Lu Guizhen's face immediately fell, and her brows furrowed into a deep frown.
She put the chicken on the ground and her voice suddenly rose.
"Grandma! Watch your mouth! Don't you dare insult my mom! What has she ever done to wrong you? She cooks for you every day, brings you tea and water, and you're still spouting nonsense!"
She became more and more aggrieved as she spoke, and her eyes even turned a little red.
If I had known she would start yelling at me as soon as she woke up, I shouldn't have gone to wake her up!
I kindly stayed by her bedside, only to be met with this unwarranted accusation. It's truly disheartening!
In fact, Shen Cuifen hadn't gone far. She was standing under the eaves, leaning against the door frame, still holding the blood-stained kitchen knife in her hand.
She didn't get angry; instead, the corners of her mouth turned up slightly, revealing a faint, cold smile.
At this moment, she slowly walked out from under the eaves.
She stood at the doorway, leaning slightly against the doorframe, and gave Li Fangfang a cold look.
Then, she gently raised the corners of her mouth.
“This chicken really deserves to be slaughtered! We fed it good food and water, gave it corn and water every day, but last night it secretly ran to someone else’s house and squatted there. It even pooped all over the place under my wall. There’s no use keeping it. It’s better to make soup with it. That would be putting it to good use.”
As she spoke, her gaze intentionally or unintentionally swept over Li Fangfang's surprised and uncertain face.
She had intended to brandish the knife in her hand to scare the old woman a little longer.
But then I thought, what if I really angered her to the point of harm? Then the rest of the plan would be difficult to carry out.
So she restrained her impulse, simply and gently tucked the knife behind her back, no longer making a scene.
Li Fangfang was startled when she suddenly saw Shen Cuifen appear, and screamed "Ah!"
He suddenly shrank back, taking several steps back, then tripped and fell with a "thud".
His sturdy bottom landed directly on the bed, making the wooden bed creak.
"Ouch, my back! Ouch, it hurts so much!"
She winced in pain, clutching her lower back and gasping for breath, cold sweat pouring down her face.
But she dared not rest for long. She immediately jumped out of bed like a spring, staggered to the window, clung tightly to the windowsill with one hand, and pointed at Shen Cuifen with the other, cursing her at the top of her lungs.
"Shen Cuifen! If you dare to lay a finger on Jianguo, I'll fight you to the death! Even if I die, I'll drag you down to hell! You just wait and see!"
She had expected Shen Cuifen to rush up and start arguing with her, or even brandish a knife and force herself in front of her to scare her again.
Unexpectedly, Shen Cuifen simply stood there and smiled faintly.
Ignoring Li Fangfang's roar, she turned around and said softly to Lu Guizhen, "Guizhen, go home and eat. Mom is hungry after working all day, you should rest too."
She emphasized the word "work" when she said it.
Lu Guizhen had no intention of paying any more attention to Li Fangfang.
What's more, she just kept cursing her own mother, which was simply incomprehensible.
With a cold face, she was too lazy to argue anymore, so she simply bent down, picked up the chicken from the ground, and turned to leave.
After the two left one after the other, the room fell silent.
Li Fangfang then came to her senses and realized that she had lost her composure due to fright.
She stood by the window, her chest heaving, her eyes fixed on the direction of the kitchen.
"Shen Cuifen! You stop right there!"
She suddenly raised her voice and screamed hysterically towards the kitchen.
"Is Jian Guo alright or not? Tell me clearly! Where is he? If you dare to lay a finger on him, I will never let you off! Do you hear me! Get out here!"
But there was no response from the other side.
With no other option, she could only drag her weak body back to the window, cling to the window frame, stretch her neck, and desperately call out the names of Lu Zhonghe and Lu Zhongping.
But these two were determined to pretend they hadn't heard anything this morning.
No matter how much she shouted, even when her voice was almost hoarse, they never showed their faces.
"These two heartless brats! They're just like Shen Cuifen, cold-blooded and ruthless, without a shred of humanity! They're complete ingrates!"
Seeing that no one was paying attention to her, Li Fangfang's anger flared up.
When shouting didn't work, she simply stopped suppressing her emotions and started cursing loudly.
"Lu Zhonghe! Lu Zhongping! You two bastards! Are you deaf before you're even an adult? Or are you deliberately pretending to be stupid?"
"Did you hear me! If you don't get over here right now, I'll skin you alive and pull out your tendons!"
No matter how much she cursed, the other party ignored her.
It's pointless to curse her; nobody pays any attention to her.
Li Fangfang cursed for a long time until her throat was almost burning, her eyes were red, and her forehead was covered in a fine layer of cold sweat.
Finally, out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of Lu Zhongshun leisurely finishing his breakfast and getting ready to leave for school.
Overjoyed, she quickly reached out and leaned out of the window, shouting to him, "Zhongshun! Zhongshun! Wait a minute! When you pass by on your way to school, stop by the little girl's house next to your aunt's and tell her to tell your aunt to bring your uncle over right away! Tell her that Grandma is dying, she's about to pass away! Do you hear me!"
Hearing the shout, Lu Zhongshun paused, turned around to look at her, and frowned deeply.
"I'm not going! If you want to call someone, go call them yourself! Don't expect me to run errands for you!"
He said it coldly, without the slightest hesitation in his tone.
They had finally managed to get a stable meal by following Shen Cuifen, and their lives were just starting to look up.
He didn't want to get into trouble by helping this grandma and ruin the good life he had worked so hard for!
He's not that stupid.
Lu Zhongshun knew exactly what Li Fangfang was up to.
Isn't this just an attempt to take the opportunity to call over her brother and sister-in-law, who are also her aunt's family, to cause trouble and punish Shen Cuifen?
Once my aunt's family arrives, there will definitely be a huge commotion at home.
In the end, he'll be the one who suffers.
Being young doesn't mean you can't understand things!
He was only about ten years old.
But the cold shoulders and grievances he endured over the years had made him see through people's hearts much earlier than his peers.
