Chapter 44 An Encounter at Breakfast

“Moxi, you’ve misunderstood.” Jiang’s mother pulled her aside. “Jiang Yi didn’t mean to harm Xiao Nuan. He came to thank you. If you hadn’t informed us, he would have almost fallen for Lan Yin’s trap last night. Fortunately, we arrived in time and stopped things from escalating. Thank you so much.”

"I shouldn't have informed you." Mo Xi was still indignant. "Now look what's happened. I helped him, and now he's after my sister-in-law. He's really shot himself in the foot. I shouldn't have come to the provincial capital."

"You can leave now that you're done talking. Don't disturb our breakfast." Dingxiang, who had initially held them in awe, felt a bit disgusted by Moxi's words. "Your crisis is over, and Moxi's mission is complete. Don't repay kindness with enmity and go back to ruin Moxi's happiness."

“That’s right, my crisis is over, and Moxi’s mission is complete. This is a happy thing for everyone. Let’s have breakfast together!” Jiang Yi sat down with a thud and stuffed a steamed bun into his mouth.

"Okay, let's eat together then." Jiang's mother sat down as well, patting the seat next to her. "Old Jiang, sit down and eat with us."

"Ha, I must say, you city folks are really shameless," Mercina said, looking at them. "We don't even welcome you, and you still want to sit down and eat with us?"

Jiang's mother smiled, waved to the waiter, and then ordered a table full of food. After ordering, she gave her husband a wink, and Jiang's father immediately went to settle the breakfast bill, and also paid for the food that Moxi and the others had ordered.

Moxi and Jiang Yi were like sworn enemies, glaring at each other with every bite they took. He was unhappy that she wore Xiao Nuan's dress and carried Xiao Nuan's bag, while she was unhappy that he had ulterior motives and wanted to make a move on his sister-in-law.

Jiang Ma and Ding Xiang started chatting, and the two hit it off more and more as they talked.

When Dingxiang mentioned taking Moxi shopping, Jiang Yi said, "I'll go too."

"Where are you going?" Jiang's mother slapped her son. "Don't make things worse."

“I’m not trying to cause trouble. I’m going to buy this girl two dresses so she can change out of Xiao Nuan’s dress,” Jiang Yi said. “Xiao Nuan is reluctant to wear her dresses and carry her bags, so we can’t let this girl ruin them.”

"You..." Mo Xi clenched his fists in anger, wanting to punch that arrogant face.

Jiang's mother shook her head and said nothing more. She knew her own son; if he wanted to do something, he would definitely do it.

"Don't be angry, girl," Jiang's father said, trying to smooth things over. "We'll buy you the most expensive things later, don't be shy. The styles from a few years ago aren't very nice anymore. Let's pick out a few trendy dresses and a fashionable bag to make this kid feel the pinch."

“Exactly,” Jiang’s mother agreed.

"I don't care!" Moxi pouted. "Who knows if he's a pervert? He wants to take back the dress my sister-in-law wore? I'm not giving it to him."

"Who's a pervert? Who are you calling a pervert?" Jiang Yi stood up, pointing his finger at Mo Xi's nose.

"Anyone who answers is a pervert." Mo Xi slapped his hand away. "Aunt Ding, let's go."

When Dingxiang went to pay the bill, she heard that the Jiang family had already paid.

"Boss, could you calculate how much all that we ordered cost?"

"Two yuan and eight jiao, and a jin of grain coupons."

Moshi pulled a five-dollar bill from his bag, walked over, and slapped the money on the table. "You don't need to pay for our breakfast."

Then, without looking back, he walked out.

"This girl is quite interesting," Jiang's mother said with a smile, watching Moxi's retreating figure.

Jiang Yi also chased after him.

"Son, come back, don't go!"

"Let him go. He won't get away with it. He'll suffer with such a sharp-tongued girl." Father Jiang shook his head.

Dingxiang took Moxi on a wild spree. First, they went to the small commodity wholesale market because Moxi said she wanted to buy some cheap trinkets to set up a stall at home.

"You have a good eye; these goods you've picked will definitely sell well."

"That's right, I've been influenced by my sister-in-law, so I've developed a good eye for things," Mo Xi said smugly.

Is your sister-in-law really that amazing?

"It's more than just amazing." Mo Xi talked on and on about Su Xiaonuan, then her eyes lit up and she pointed to the group of people in front of her. "Aunt Ding, look!"

"Have you taken a fancy to that straw hat again?" Dingxiang exclaimed. "You know what, it really is quite nice. Come on, let's go buy a couple."

Before Moxi could speak, Dingxiang pulled her in and squeezed through.

"Boss, how much is this straw hat?"

"One dollar and fifty cents."

"Then give us two."

"Sorry, we're all sold out," the owner said. "If you need more, please come back in a few days."

Mo Ran was so shocked that his mouth dropped open. The boss was actually selling it for 1.5 yuan and it was still in short supply. He made almost half of the profit by reselling it. It was too easy to make money!

"Shall we go see if other stores have it?" Dingxiang said dejectedly.

"Nowhere else has it, only us," the shop owner said, shaking his head. "If you don't believe me, you can look around."

"Let's go." Dingxiang thought the shop owner was lying to her, and pulled Moxi away. "Hmph, I don't believe other shops don't have this."

"Aunt Ding, you really won't find another store with this straw hat."

"You silly girl, don't believe what that boss says."

"Aunt Ding, it's true. Those straw hats were made by my sister-in-law, she taught us how to make them. There were only fifty, no more," Mo Xi asked, puzzled. "My sister-in-law said it was an order from a merchant in the city, so how did they end up in the wholesale market in the provincial capital?"

"You guys really made this up?"

“Yes,” Moxi said, “This style was designed by my sister-in-law, and it’s all woven from vines and willow branches from our rural area.”

"I really want to see your sister-in-law right away," Dingxiang said expectantly. "There are such smart and capable people in the world. No wonder Yuehua wanted to take your sister-in-law as her goddaughter. If it were me, I would also rush to take her as my goddaughter."

Jiang Yi had been secretly following them. He had initially kept a distance, trying to hear what they were saying, but before he knew it, he had gotten too close. When Mo Xi turned around, he had no choice but to slip into a corner.

"What are you looking at?" Dingxiang asked, noticing her looking around.

"I realized someone was following me."

“No one’s following us. Come on, I’ll take you to the clothing store.” Dingxiang pulled her along. “After we buy the clothes, we’ll go find something to eat.”

“I’m not buying clothes.” Merck waved the bag in his hand. “This is enough.”

She only had a few dozen yuan. At first, she planned to buy some gifts for her family. But when she got to the small commodities market, she couldn't resist and bought twenty yuan worth of goods. She couldn't have come all this way for nothing; she had to make some money back.

“I’m the one who wants to buy you clothes,” Dingxiang said. “Come on, let’s go pick out two nice dresses and change out of your sister-in-law’s dress.”

"You don't need to buy it for me, I'll return it to my sister-in-law when I get home."

"Oh, please give me a chance to show off. I'll have to trouble you again when I go to your house later." Dingxiang snatched the woven bag from her hand. "I'll hold it for you. Try on some clothes properly later, and only buy the ones that fit well and look good."
