The community has a beautiful environment with shady trees.
Xiao Moxi explained as they walked. "Mom, if you walk around the lake from our house, you'll be back where you started. If you ever don't know how to get home, just remember our house number. You can go left or right to get back home."
"It's so beautiful!" Zhang Yulan exclaimed. "No wonder you didn't want to go home after you arrived, the environment is really nice!"
“It’s my brother and sister-in-law who won’t let me go back,” Moxi snorted. “It’s not like I want to stay here.”
"Mom wasn't blaming you, she was just saying it. Look at you, you're really angry?" Only then did Zhang Yulan notice the change in her daughter. Her hair was styled like a girl's, and she was dressed nicely. She couldn't help but take a few more glances at her.
"I'm not angry?"
"Why are you giving me a left hum if you're not angry?"
“Mom, I saw Li Chunxiang,” Xiao Moxi said softly. “Let’s hurry up and leave before she sees us. It’s not good if she stops us in the neighborhood while we’re carrying these things, especially this chicken. It would be bad if it pooped. The provincial capital isn’t the countryside. Chickens can’t poop anywhere, and people can’t spit anywhere.”
Hearing her daughter's words, Zhang Yulan swallowed back the saliva that was about to come out. "Can't I even spit anywhere?"
"Yes."
"That's inhumane; you can't even spit."
"We're all about hygiene here. It's so dirty to spit anywhere!" Moxi gestured to the right with his chin raised. "Look, there are trash cans like these all over the place. If you want to spit, you can spit into the trash can."
"You're saying that toad with its mouth open is a trash can?" Zhang Yulan's mouth was wide open, almost as wide as a trash can with a toad's mouth on the roadside.
"Yes, that's the trash can."
"You're lying, girl. That's not a trash can, it's clearly a toy for kids to play with!"
"Mom, it really is a trash can. If you don't believe me, go and see for yourself." Moxi is young and quick to learn. She saw passersby throwing away trash and knew it was a trash can without being told.
But her mother, who hasn't traveled far from home in decades, probably needs to be taught everything slowly before she can gain new knowledge.
Zhang Yulan carried the chicken and walked quickly toward the toad with its mouth wide open. She stretched her head out and looked inside. Sure enough, it was full of garbage. She coughed up the saliva she had just swallowed and spat it into the toad's mouth.
Xiao Moxi led Zhang Yulan along, explaining everything she had learned to her mother. She even pointed to arrow symbols along the roadside to help her mother find her way, saying, "Aunt Zhang lives in this direction."
"Why do they all look the same?" Zhang Yulan, who has no sense of direction, looked at the buildings that all looked alike.
“All the buildings look the same, but each building has its own number. If you really can’t find it, just remember the building number and ask the neighbors in the community. They will tell you how to get there.” Mo Xi was worried that her mother would get lost in the community by herself. Her mother had spent her whole life in the village, and this was her first time in the city, which was the provincial capital. It was really hard on her.
“Our house is easy to find, and the buildings that circle around the lake are easy to find, but these buildings that look exactly the same are really hard to find.” Zhang Yulan looked back at the houses that circled the lake.
Moxi and her mother talked all the way, until their mouths were dry. When they arrived at Aunt Zhang's house, Aunt Zhang invited them in for tea, which Moxi accepted. Since she was thirsty, she sat down and had a cup of tea.
Aunt Zhang happily accepted the gift, put the chicken on the balcony, sprinkled some rice on it, and then closed the balcony door.
While chatting over tea, Zhang Yulan discovered that she and Aunt Zhang were not only born in the same year, but also on the same day, month, and year. Now, the two old women became as close as sisters and their conversation went on and on.
If it weren't for Moxi urging her to hurry back for dinner, Zhang Yulan would have continued talking with Aunt Zhang all night, saying that it was a blessing they had accumulated over several lifetimes. They both had the surname Zhang, and were only a few hours apart in age. Zhang Yulan was born during the day, while Aunt Zhang was born at night, so Aunt Zhang had to call Zhang Yulan "sister."
Both felt they had known each other for a long time and were reluctant to part.
On their way home, the mother and daughter ran into Li Chunxiang again.
They had a kind of hostile, antagonistic atmosphere.
"Mom, let's go this way." Mo Xi took Zhang Yulan's hand and turned to the right under Li Chunxiang's watchful gaze.
She wasn't afraid of Li Chunxiang; she just wanted to take her mother home for dinner as soon as possible.
I heard that Mom threw up in the car, and I was worried that she would be hungry, so I chose to take a different route.
"You think you can leave? No way!" Li Chunxiang quickly ran to the right to block the way.
"What do you want?" Zhang Yulan stared at Li Chunxiang calmly. "We're letting you have your way, do you really think we're afraid of you?"
"Country bumpkin." Zhang Yulan had permed hair and wore the most fashionable clothes in the provincial capital, along with black leather shoes. She looked Zhang Yulan up and down in her rustic clothes and said disdainfully. "My daughter was imprisoned by that bitch Su Xiaonuan. I was just about to come and settle accounts with you. You've come here by yourself. Well, I'll get justice for Yinzi."
"Seeking justice?" Mo Xi adopted a fighting stance. "Lan Yin is the slut. It was that slut Lan Yin who set fire to my sister-in-law's shop. It was Xiang Qiuyun who betrayed her. It was Xiang Qiuyun who reported her to the police. If you want justice, go find Xiang Qiuyun. My sister-in-law is the victim. She hasn't even had a chance to settle accounts with you yet, but you've come to us willingly. Don't blame me for being impolite."
Moxi flexed her arms and legs in a show of bravado, something she had learned from Su Xiaonuan. However, Su Xiaonuan was truly skilled in martial arts, while Moxi was merely putting on an act, lacking any real intimidation.
Zhang Yulan tugged at Moxi, stepping forward to shield her daughter, her voice still soft and gentle. "Li Chunxiang, your man is having an affair with Xie Xiuhua, and you still have the nerve to cause trouble here?"
Zhang Yulan, who never liked to gossip, was afraid that her daughter couldn't beat Li Chunxiang, that shrew. Even if the mother and daughter joined forces, they might not be able to defeat Li Chunxiang. So she had to tell the story to drive Li Chunxiang crazy so that they could take the opportunity to slip away.
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Li Chunxiang didn't believe it at all. "Xie Xiuhua at least calls Lan Guangxue 'Uncle.' If you're going to say my Lan Guangxue has a lover, you have to come up with something believable, right? Zhang Yulan, your ability to spread rumors is terrible. Do you think I'd fall for your tricks?"
Li Chunxiang realized that Zhang Yulan wanted to pull Moxi away and thought that the other party was afraid of her, so she became even more arrogant.
Su Xiaonuan went out to buy sealed storage bags. When she drove back and turned the corner, she saw the scene in front of her. She parked her car on the side of the road and quickly ran over, blocking Zhang Yulan and Moxi's way with great force. "Li Chunxiang, we're neighbors now, we'll see each other all the time. If you dare to cause trouble for my family, don't blame me for being impolite."
"Do I need you to be polite to me?" Li Chunxiang thought to herself. Our two families are like oil and water, when has Su Xiaonuan ever been polite to me?
“Okay, you said it yourself.” Su Xiaonuan grabbed one of them with each hand. “Mom, Moxi, let’s go.”
