"Buy whatever you want, just pick whatever you want to eat."
Jiang Xue smiled as she looked at the small vegetable garden, which contained spinach, cilantro, Shanghai bok choy, radishes, and lush garlic.
"Grandma, can I have a little of everything?"
Grandma Li said with a smile, "My daughter-in-law is still working at your factory, so I'll help you with that."
How could Jiang Xue feel guilty about the old man's gray hair?
"I'll do it myself."
"Sure, make as much as you want, don't be shy."
Jiang Xue chopped a large Chinese cabbage, and then prepared a little bit of cilantro, spinach, Shanghai bok choy, and garlic.
When Grandma Li saw that Jiang Xue got up and wasn't going to pull any more, she quickly took a knife, cut a bunch of chives, and stuffed them into Jiang Xue's basket.
Jiang Xue didn't leave immediately; instead, she slipped a dollar into Grandma Li's apron pocket.
"No, I can't accept that. How could I possibly charge you for just a few dishes?"
Jiang Xue pressed down on Grandma Li's hand, which she had shoved back at her, and said, "If you don't accept it, I won't come over to help with the vegetables anymore. You work so hard growing them."
Jiang Xue insisted on giving the money back to Grandma Li.
"Why are you being so polite, child?"
When Jiang Xue returned home and saw Ji Chen, she said, "Where did you two go? The door wasn't even closed. Be careful next time."
Ji Chen ignored Jiang Xue. He took the two children to the mountains to set up traps and catch some rabbits because it was getting cold.
Jiang Xue went into the kitchen, intending to save time by blanching some vegetables, as the batch of chives would probably wilt by tomorrow if they weren't eaten today.
She cut the Shanghai bok choy in half, laid it on the cutting board to dry, and then salted it to remove some moisture. It's a completely natural pickled vegetable that will taste great when used in sauerkraut fish or sauerkraut dumplings.
She washed the chives, soaked some sweet potato vermicelli, and cracked two eggs. She first fried the eggs in a pan until they were set, then mixed them into the chopped chives and vermicelli.
I scooped out two spoonfuls of flour and kneaded the dough to make dumplings.
Shaoheng and Shaomeng waited by the stove for Jiang Xue's dumplings to be ready. Jiang Xue smiled and said, "You two little gluttons, move aside and wait inside. Your aunt will bring them over."
Jiang Xue also added some chili sauce and served it all on the square table.
Seeing Ji Chen doing the accounts, she said, "Let's eat first."
Seeing this, Ji Chen quickly put away the bill and helped get chopsticks and bowls.
Jiang Xue had been busy all afternoon and finally got to eat, but she hadn't even had a bite of the dumplings yet.
Why did you go to your appointment today?
Ji Chen's words not only broke the silence but also ruined Jiang Xue's appetite.
“He helped me get an order before, and I treated him to a meal to thank him.”
"Then I've also placed an order for you. What about me?"
Jiang Xue's eyes widened. She really wanted to glare at Ji Chen, but she let it go for the sake of the order.
"I don't care. You'll treat me to dinner or a movie tomorrow. Leave the two kids with Xiaoling and let her take care of them for a while."
Jiang Xue was speechless for a moment. She wanted to argue, but it seemed she had no power to refute it at all.
The order has already been placed, and the contract has been signed. I can't just back out now.
Jiang Xue was eating dumplings when she seemed to hear someone calling her from outside. She quickly got up and opened the door.
The village party secretary shouted with a flashlight, "Jiang Xue, Jiang Xue, something bad has happened!"
Ji Chen sensed something was wrong and quickly stood up to ask, "What happened?"
Jiang Xue's heart tightened even more, wondering if something had really gone wrong with Wang Jing.
The village party secretary was out of breath from running.
