Chapter 18: Parting on bad terms!

Chapter 18: Parting on bad terms!

"You won't marry Gu Yunting?"

Jiang Weilong snorted coldly. Su Mengxue was just a woman from the countryside. It was a miracle that she could marry into the Gu family. How could she not marry?

A hint of disdain flashed across his face: "Su Mengxue, stop lying to me."

Su Mengxue could tell Jiang Weilong looked down on her. She straightened her back, raised her chin, and looked him in the face. She said in a cold, hard tone, "I may be from the countryside, but that doesn't mean I'm going to trade marriage for so-called wealth and glory. You guys from wealthy families think you're superior, and that others are using you to climb the ladder. But in my opinion, your backgrounds aren't that valuable."

A hint of darkness flashed in Gu Yunting's eyes, while Jiang Weilong looked at Su Mengxue with suspicion in his eyes.

Su Mengxue paused, her tone becoming increasingly cold. "Rather than compromise and marry into a wealthy family, then be trapped in this large house and spend my life feeling suffocated, I would rather rely on my own hands to pursue the life I want. A woman doesn't have to rely on a man to survive. As long as I work hard, I believe I can become a wealthy woman myself in the future."

It was the first time that Jiang Weilong heard such remarks from a woman. He couldn't help but look closely at the woman in front of him. She spoke with her back straight and without a trace of timidity. Not only that, she was beautiful and had an extraordinary temperament, completely different from his stereotype of a country girl.

She said she didn't want to marry Gu Yunting? His eyes flickered. She was a woman who had lost her virginity, and the man who was going to marry her was the most popular man in Jiangbei. How could she really not want to?

He leaned closer, his whole body filled with a tentative sense of oppression: "Before tonight, this matter will spread out. If you don't marry Gu Yunting, aren't you afraid of rumors?"

Su Mengxue raised the corners of her eyes slightly and replied nonchalantly: "The tongue is in other people's mouths. As long as they don't curse me to my face, I will just treat them as dogs barking. If they dare to talk about me to my face..." Her eyes suddenly flashed with coldness: "I, Su Mengxue, am not someone who can be bullied."

Jiang Weilong looked at Su Mengxue's resolute attitude and suddenly felt that she was quite courageous. He concealed his emotions and continued to ask the question in his heart: "Since you don't plan to marry Gu Yunting, why did you stand up and speak for him?"

As soon as these words came out, a strange look flashed across Gu Yunting's dark pupils. His eyes were fixed firmly on Su Mengxue, and even his breathing became lighter unconsciously.

Su Mengxue subconsciously glanced at Gu Yunting, pursed her lips, and blurted out, "Because he took the initiative to stand up for me when Gu Xuejiao was giving me trouble. I'm the type of person who hates owing others the most, so I have to stand up and help him explain this matter clearly, that's all."

Is that all? Gu Yunting's eyes darkened when he heard Su Mengxue's straightforward response. His fingers clenched and unclenched unconsciously, and his lips parted slightly as if he wanted to say something, but the sound was stuck in his throat and no sound came out.

Jiang Weilong could see that Su Mengxue really didn't have that kind of intention towards Gu Yunting. He narrowed his eyes slightly, turned his head to look at Gu Yunting, and said in a calm tone: "Gu Yunting, after Shi Yi comes back, whether you two want to fulfill the marriage contract you made when you were young is your freedom. But before that, I hope you can wait for her not to marry another woman."

He and Gu Yunting had known each other for many years, and he knew how popular Gu Yunting was in Jiangbei. He hadn't discussed marriage in all these years because Shi Yi hadn't been found yet. It wasn't true that Gu Yunting loved Shi Yi that much, after all, they were only five or six years old back then.

He knew that Gu Yunting was acting out of guilt, and he also knew that Gu Yunting had been mobilizing various connections to find Shi Yi over the years, so he did not blame him too much.

Call him selfish or power-hungry, he wouldn't allow Gu Yunting to talk about marriage before Shi Yi was found. Otherwise, he wouldn't be able to explain to her when Shi Yi came back. He was even more afraid that it would upset his parents and grandfather.

Gu Yunting said nothing. Just when Jiang Weilong was about to continue questioning him, his orderly came hurriedly. After listening to the orderly's report, Jiang Weilong strode away with a sullen face.

Su Mengxue looked at Jiang Weilong's leaving back, curled her lips in disdain, and muttered softly: "This man is so domineering. What right does he have to interfere in other people's marriages?"

After she finished speaking, she seemed to have thought of something and came back to her senses to look at Gu Yunting. She saw that his face was tense, and there was a suffocating low pressure lingering around him. The emotions surging in his dark eyes were obscure and unclear.

Su Mengxue knew that Gu Yunting was in a bad mood because he was beaten and scolded. It would be a bit rude of her to ask him for help now, but this jade pendant was too important to her, so she didn't care about anything else.

She coughed lightly to break the stagnant air, and her voice softened unconsciously: "Gu Yunting, you and Chen Yanzhi..."

Before he finished speaking, Gu Yunting suddenly raised his eyes and looked at Su Mengxue, the look in his eyes becoming more and more intense.

The next second, his gaze passed over her face and fell on the loose white shirt on her body. His eyes were as cold as if they were poisoned.

After a moment of silence, he lowered his eyes to hide the emotions surging in his eyes and asked in a cold voice, "Why are you asking him?"

Seeing Gu Yunting's bewildered expression, Su Mengxue gritted her teeth and managed to raise the corners of her lips: "I'd like you to introduce us to each other. I..."

"Not familiar." Gu Yunting interrupted coldly.

Su Mengxue's lips twitched slightly, and she was about to speak when Gu Yunting added coldly, "Su Mengxue, who do you think I am?" He then stormed out of the yard.

Su Mengxue didn't know what was wrong with Gu Yunting's brain. She just wanted him to introduce them to each other, so why did he have to be so fierce? And he even said such a confusing thing.

She quickly realized that Gu Yunting was angry with Jiang Weilong and was using her as a punching bag. She stood there with her hands in her pockets, pursed her lips, and muttered unhappily, "Your kindness is taken for granted. If I had known earlier, I shouldn't have helped him explain. I should have just let Jiang Weilong beat him to death."

After she finished speaking, she lowered her head and sighed heavily. She originally wanted to ask Gu Yunting and Chen Yanzhi to introduce her, and then use Gu Yunting's personal favor to bargain with Chen Yanzhi or ask Chen Yanzhi to give her a few more days. Now it seems that this idea has completely failed.

Just when she was worried, she thought of the shirt she was wearing. After thinking for a moment, she made up her mind. She deliberately tore the sleeves of her shirt a little, and then returned to the front hall.

At this moment, the guests in the front hall had already taken their seats to watch the show and eat. She looked around and quickly spotted Chen Yanzhi and Shen Min in the crowd. They were chatting enthusiastically with the guests at the same table.

She quickly squeezed through the laughing crowd and came to Shen Min, half-bowed and approached her, with a smile at the corner of her eyes: "Comrade Shen, would you mind talking for a moment?"
