"President Lin, please listen to me, please let me explain..." The woman, Lin Xiazhu, ignored her and turned to Yan Xin, pleading, "President Yan, please have mercy and don't let President Lin fire me. It's not easy for me, a country girl, to find a job in a big city. I'm already this old, it'll be very difficult for me to find work again..."
"Stop talking and get out of here. If you keep making a fuss, we'll get security to kick you out, and you'll lose even more face." Yan Xin was impatient with her words and sternly told her to leave.
"Then, where is my daughter?" the cleaner asked hopefully.
"We'll talk about your daughter's matter in a couple of days. She climbed to the roof today and threatened to jump. It's a bad influence and a serious offense. I doubt she can stay." Yan Xin said expressionlessly.
"No, bosses, please listen to me..." the cleaner tried to struggle.
Just then, the work bell rang. Lin Xiazhu grabbed the cleaner and carried her downstairs to the dormitory building. "Go upstairs, pack your things, and come down right away. Then go to the office to settle your wages. If you dawdle any longer, your wages will be deducted."
Upon hearing that her wages would be deducted, the woman fell silent, went upstairs dejectedly, and came down in less than ten minutes. She was usually very frugal; aside from essential household items, she had practically nothing else, which she packed into a large woven bag.
Lin Xiazhu and Yan Xin took her to the office, had the finance department settle her salary, gave her the money, and then had someone take her out, forbidding her from ever coming back.
"Finally gone. Ugh, that was awful." Lin Xiazhu sighed and turned to go into the inner office. When she was rescuing the person, her arm rubbed against the roof wall, and the skin was probably chafed raw. It was burning with pain.
Although she was very strong, she had fair and delicate skin, so she suffered a lot.
"Let me see." Yan Xin came in, locked the office door, and told Lin Xiazhu to take off her shirt so that the injury on the inside of her arm wouldn't be visible.
Lin Xiazhu was only wearing a white shirt today, with her underwear underneath. When she took off the white shirt and raised her arm, she found a bloody stain on the inside, which was shocking.
"Let's go to the hospital to get it treated, the blood is seeping out." Only then did they notice the bloodstains on the sleeves of the white shirt.
"No need, just disinfect it with iodine, it's not that delicate." The factory has a clinic where minor illnesses and pains can be treated.
"I'll go get the first-aid kit. Don't blame me for not reminding you, I'm afraid your husband will be heartbroken and angry when he finds out you're injured." Yan Xin said as she went out, locking the door behind her.
Lin Xiazhu walked to the desk, opened the cabinet underneath, and started rummaging through it. Inside were several sets of factory uniforms, as well as a few clothes that she rarely wore and had left unused. She picked out a loose shirt to wear first, otherwise it would be too strange to be wearing only underwear, even though there was no one else in the office.
After treating the wound, Lin Xiazhu and Yan Xin went to the dormitory to see the girl who wanted to commit suicide. The girl who was emotional just now had calmed down. She had lost her courage and was only afraid. Even her voice had returned to its previous soft buzzing.
"Don't worry about your job. We're giving you a chance. Stay and work hard. Don't do what you did today and hurt yourself or the factory again. People make their own way. Think carefully about how you plan to go from here on out. What kind of life you can lead in the future is up to you." That's all Lin Xiazhu said.
She's in a bad mood right now and isn't in the mood to be a savior. Aside from offering some advice, she won't help her much. Who isn't pitiful? Who isn't in trouble? There are so many workers in the entire industrial park, all children from poor families. The little girl who wanted to jump off the building today isn't the only one in her situation.
Lin Xiazhu has experienced this firsthand; there are indeed many parents like this. They make their children work to earn money, want to take all the wages, and control everything about their daughters. Once they run out of money to return, they really have thoughts of wanting their children to die.
"I've read a few period dramas before with similar plots, and I even complained in the book reviews, 'The author is just making things up for the sake of making things tragic, it's like a slideshow for the sake of the plot. Where in the world are there so many melodramatic things? Where are there really parents who are so heartless to their children? Where do all these weird relatives come from?'"
Now I truly understand a principle: it's always so naive and easy to hurt people when you talk about things that haven't happened to you. Just because you haven't experienced something doesn't mean you're lucky; it doesn't mean such things don't happen in the world.
Yan Xin felt a little guilty, recalling the things she had done and said to Lin Xiazhu in the past, which were really too much.
"I want to help her so that she can live a more normal life." Yan Xin seemed to have made up her mind to do something she thought was meaningful and necessary.
"There's no need to give her any special treatment. How can you help her? Give her a raise, or find her an easier job? Instead of that, you might as well find a psychologist to give everyone a lecture. Sigh, I'm not going to get involved in this anymore, you figure it out." Lin Xiazhu was a little annoyed and wanted to go home early.
After walking a few steps toward the factory gate, he turned back and instructed, "From now on, all doors leading to the roof are locked. No one is allowed to go up without our permission. Also, tell the workshop director to tell the line leaders of each line that in addition to keeping an eye on production, they also need to pay attention to the employees' emotions. If someone wants to jump off a building, there will be no reaction at all."
"Forget it, let's find two dormitory supervisors with sound morals who know how to do ideological work to keep an eye on these girls. It would be best if they were retired aunties from the neighborhood committee. These people need ideological education." Lin Xiazhu gave several instructions in one breath.
"Are you leaving already? Why don't you make the arrangements? You have more experience than me." Yan Xin was getting a headache. It would be great if they had a capable assistant to share the burden. It was really too much for the two bosses to handle these things themselves.
"My arm hurts terribly, I want to go back to sleep, I don't want to go to work." Lin Xiazhu walked away without looking back.
She got her driver's license last year and has been driving herself to and from get off work for the past few months, unless Bai Ruan comes to pick her up. She wanted to drive as soon as she got her license, but Bai Ruan insisted on keeping her on the road and told her she could only drive after passing his test.
She was so angry that she ignored him for several days, but he was determined to keep an eye on her, afraid that she might have a car accident because she wasn't familiar with the road. Her anger was useless. After they got their marriage certificate, Bai Ru'an was so happy that he allowed her to drive alone and even said he would give her a Mercedes-Benz.
She dared not accept it; it was too high-profile and she was afraid of attracting envy. Her husband insisted on giving it to her, so she chose a Santana, which she now drives every day.
"Xiaozhu, don't drive yourself. How can you drive with an arm injury? Why don't you ask your husband to come pick you up? If he's busy, have the Bai family's driver come. Or I can just take you home. We can deal with things here tomorrow." Yan Xin also felt annoyed and didn't want to stay at the factory.
Seeing her like this, Lin Xiazhu didn't rush to leave. Instead, she called Bai Ruan and asked him to send someone to pick her up. She didn't tell him what had happened at the factory.
After hanging up the phone, she started arranging for employees to lock the doors on each rooftop, and then called the workshop supervisor into the office for a meeting to explain everything that needed to be explained.
"Please bear with me during this difficult time. I will give you a bonus at the end of the month. I hope that there will be no more worker suicides in the future."
