Chapter Eight: Desperate to Marry into the City

"Bang, splat." Yan Xin forcefully threw the bundle of seedlings she had tied into the paddy field, splashing mud and water everywhere, and Old Lady Lin was splashed all over her face.

"Pah, pah, pah! Are you possessed? You're so old and still throwing a tantrum. The accident has already happened, and the second son's forty-nine-day mourning period has passed. Can't you be a little stronger? Do you want to follow the second son to the afterlife?"

This was only because she felt sorry for her second son who had just passed away and couldn't bear to be harsh with his wife. If Zhao Xiaolian had dared to act like this normally, Old Lady Lin would have already pounced on her and slapped her a few times.

Yan Xin sobbed silently, glaring fiercely at Old Lady Lin. "You old hag," she thought, "if only I could howl, would I be so frustrated? I just can't make a sound!"

First they wouldn't let her die, and now they won't even let her cry. It's outrageous! She's suffering so much, but she has nowhere to turn to complain.

Waaaaah, I still have to get scolded, how am I supposed to live like this?

“Stop crying. You’re the only one who’s upset. Aren’t you upset about your four children? They’re so young. If you don’t pull yourself together, they’ll really have no way to survive.”

Grandma Lin was exasperated. They had already separated their households, and the eldest son's family also needed to plant rice seedlings. If she hadn't been worried about the second son's family, would she have needed to come over early in the morning to help with the seedling removal?

Even if she favored the eldest son's family, the old woman couldn't help but worry about the widow and orphans in the second son's family. Those four girls were a burden, and who knew how they might drag her down.

But she still couldn't turn a blind eye; after all, they were her descendants.

This daughter-in-law is such a disappointment. She seems so shrewd, why can't she think straight?

After a hectic morning, Grandma Lin finally said she could go home for breakfast, and Yan Xin was finally able to relax. She reluctantly stopped what she was doing and plopped down in the paddy field.

Old Mrs. Lin was terrified and pulled the person up, saying, "Why are you doing this..."

Seeing that Yan Xin was pale and sweating profusely, and that she had to lean on Old Lady Lin to stay upright, Old Lady Lin swallowed her curses and nimbly helped her walk back.

"Xiaozhu, Chacha, come and take care of your mother. Oh dear, why am I so unlucky? I'm old and I'm already burying my children, and now I have to worry about you girls too."

As she spoke, Grandma Lin cried. In her opinion, Zhao Xiaolian was still reeling from the shock of her second son's death.

Actually, Zhao Xiaolian didn't want to marry Lin Shanlai before, because she thought his family wasn't well-off enough. Her family was even poorer. Zhao Xiaolian really wanted to marry into the city, but unfortunately, she wasn't destined for that. Her parents forced her to marry Lin Shanlai.

Because Old Mrs. Lin paid a dowry of two hundred yuan, Zhao Xiaolian had no choice but to marry under pressure from her family. However, even after marrying into the family, she still looked down on Lin Shanlai from the bottom of her heart.

She's been married for ten years, and she's indifferent to Lin Shanlai and their child, always wearing a sour face, as if someone owes her hundreds of thousands.

I never expected that Lin Shanlai would die and she would look so haggard. I really misunderstood her before. She is not a cold-hearted person, she just doesn't know how to express herself. In fact, she is very sentimental.

If Lin Xiazhu knew what Old Madam Lin was thinking, she would definitely laugh out loud. Zhao Xiaolian was incapable of being sentimental, let alone having much affection for Lin Shanlai. She was even more indifferent to the four sisters than a biological daughter.

Otherwise, the sisters wouldn't have suffered so much in their past lives.

Zhao Xiaolian's soul has been replaced, but Lin Xiazhu doesn't know why or how.

All she knew was why Zhao Xiaolian looked so haggard and devastated: Yan Xin wanted to die, but was being controlled by some invisible force and was now being forced to do farm work. She couldn't bear it either.

Two days passed, and the rice seedlings belonging to the second family were planted. Yan Xin was already somewhat numb from the stress; her thighs trembled when she walked, and her back ached.

"There are so many insects in the field. I saw so many leeches, and I don't even know if they've crawled into my legs... This is no human life." Yan Xin couldn't find anyone to confide in, so she could only force herself to cry to Lin Xiazhu.

Lin Xiazhu felt a chill run down her spine from the sound of her crying. She wanted to shake off her hand and ignore her, but with her younger sister watching from outside, she couldn't show it too much.

Since they were all people with secrets, even though they disliked each other, they had to keep their mouths shut and cover up each other's identities.

"There are so many people farming in the countryside, does that mean they have no chance of survival? It's not as terrible as you say. You're just being dramatic. No matter how much you cry, it won't change your current situation. You might as well be strong and face it bravely."

"...Anyone can make sarcastic remarks, but I'm the one who's suffering. What do you know?" Yan Xin cried even harder, feeling that Lin Xiazhu was the one who had ruined her.

What's infuriating is that she can't do anything to her, and might even have to depend on her for a living.

Lin Xiazhu chuckled, not wanting to talk to her.

Seeing her reaction, Yan Xin felt a little guilty. Lin Xiazhu was reborn. Before her rebirth, she grew up in Linjia Village and had lived a hard life for at least ten years. How could she not understand?

"I...I know I was wrong. Can you please let me go? I want to go back." Yan Xin's face was covered in tears and snot.

Lin Xiazhu turned her face away in disgust. "It's not that I don't want to help you, it's just that I don't know how to help you. Do you think I wanted you to transmigrate here? If you want to transmigrate, at least choose someone else."

To make matters worse, she transmigrated into her mother's body. No matter how badly Zhao Xiaolian treated her, she was still her biological mother. Her mother's sudden death left her feeling uneasy.

"Why is it that whenever someone asks me to work, I can't escape it? Like a puppet, I obey orders and work hard against my will. I'm so miserable. Go and read all the transmigration novels from later generations. Which transmigrated woman is as miserable as me?"
