Chapter Nineteen: Can they really find her a job?

Grandma Lin glared at the other party, feeling annoyed, but now was not a good time to fight. Zhao Xiaolian, that useless piece of trash, was still dragging her down, and she had to deal with him first.

"Stop howling, get up now, I'll carry you back." Old Mrs. Lin is not short and has a large frame. Although she is over fifty years old, she is still quite strong.

As a result, Zhao Xiaolian did not cooperate with her and sat on the ground sobbing incessantly. Old Mrs. Lin gritted her teeth, reached out and grabbed Zhao Xiaolian's arm, pulling her up.

Then, ignoring Zhao Xiaolian's reaction, he squatted down and carried the person on his back as they ran back.

Lin Xiazhu caught a wild rabbit in the nearby mountains today and handed it to Lin Chacha, saying, "Second sister, prepare the rabbit and make soup for tonight."

"Okay." Lin Chacha smiled and her eyes crinkled. She loved processing wild game the most. Once it was processed, it meant there would be meat to eat. How could she not be happy?

"Big sister, second sister, something bad has happened! Mom's foot, her foot is bleeding so much!" Lin Xiaoxue staggered back from outside, holding Lin Taozi's hand.

"Didn't Mom go to the private plot to grow vegetables? How did she get injured?" Lin Chacha picked up the rabbit and was about to run outside.

"You go about your business, I'll go take a look." Lin Xiazhu pulled her aside, preparing to go out and check.

She had barely taken a step when Old Mrs. Lin carried the person back, stepped over the threshold, and yelled, "Hurry up and get this person down! What are you looking at? What can you possibly see?"

"Ouch, my old back! You useless woman are going to break my bones! What a disaster!"

With a loud thud, Old Lady Lin threw Zhao Xiaolian onto the bed. Zhao Xiaolian winced in pain; her bones felt like they were about to break.

"It hurts, it hurts! You old hag, are you trying to kill me?" Yan Xin lay on the bed and didn't want to move. She wanted to die.

"Pah! With your pathetic state, do I even need to lift a finger? I bet you'll ruin yourself sooner or later. Who can grow vegetables and then lose their foot by hoeing them?" Old Mrs. Lin was furious. So many people had gathered around and assumed she was the one who had injured her second son's wife.

Those with ill intentions are still saying behind her back that she is an evil mother-in-law. This doesn't mean they are saying bad things about her behind her back, but rather they are saying these things about her right behind her back.

They didn't give her any face at all. Those old hags are just waiting for her; they'll make her pay.

"Your leg is gone? It's that serious?" Lin Xiazhu's expression changed, and she quickly walked to the bedside.

"Lin Xiazhu, hurry, take me to the hospital! My foot was injured by a hoe, it hurts so much, and I'm bleeding a lot. I don't want to become a cripple." She might not die, but becoming disabled was still a possibility, and she didn't want to be disabled.

The howl was full of energy, so the injury probably wasn't serious. Thinking this, Lin Xiazhu went over to take a look at Zhao Xiaolian's foot. A large piece of skin on the instep had been scraped off, and there was a lot of blood. It looked quite scary, but it shouldn't be enough to make him lame.

"I'll go find a barefoot doctor to treat your wound. You'll need a tetanus shot." After confirming that there was nothing seriously wrong, Lin Xiazhu prepared to go find a doctor.

But someone grabbed her clothes tightly. Yan Xin, disguised as Zhao Xiaolian, glared at her and said, "It's so serious, you have to go to the hospital. You can't just brush me off like this. Hurry up and get the car ready. I need to go to the hospital."

"Let go, silly. This is a poor mountain village in the 1990s, a remote corner where even tractors can't get in. There's no hospital. Give up." Lin Xiazhu rolled her eyes, pulled her clothes back, and left.

Yan Xin looked utterly desperate. Suddenly, she pounded her chest and stamped her feet, then collapsed onto the wooden bed and rolled around a few times in despair, causing the bed to creak and groan as if it were about to break down.

Grandma Lin, Lin Xiaoxue, and Lin Taozi were all shocked by this scene. Good heavens, they've gone mad, they've really gone mad.

Going to the hospital was out of the question, so in the end, a barefoot doctor came to disinfect Zhao Xiaolian's foot, bandage it, and gave her a tetanus shot.

Yan Xin had given up. She felt that she wouldn't die even without a tetanus shot; at most, she would suffer a bit.

The treatment cost a total of fifteen yuan. Lin Xiazhu paid the money and saw the doctor off. When she returned, she saw Old Lady Lin and Lin Xiaoxue and Lin Taozi coming out of the room and locking the door.

"It's getting late. I just caught a wild rabbit on the mountain. Grandma, let's have dinner here tonight." Lin Xiazhu didn't ask her why she locked the door; she just wanted her to stay for dinner.

"I'm not eating here, I won't take advantage of your family, and you should also remember not to take advantage of Uncle's family. Let's each keep our own things," Old Mrs. Lin refused with a sour face.

After saying that, she pulled Lin Xiazhu aside and whispered, "Xiaozhu, something's really wrong with your mother." Old Mrs. Lin pointed to her head. "No wonder she can't do any work anymore. She always liked to dawdle, and now she's completely useless. How are you four sisters going to live in the future?"

"Grandma, don't call me that. Don't worry, I can support my three younger sisters and I promise I won't be a burden to you and Uncle." Lin Xiazhu said with a serious expression.

Old Mrs. Lin: "..."

Although she was indeed worried that her second son's family would drag her and her eldest son's family down, being directly told off like that was a bit harsh.

"Forget it, there's no hope of your mother supporting you and your sisters by farming. I'll have your uncle use his connections to see if he can find your mother an easy job. She's been wanting to move to the city, so let's grant her wish."

Old Mrs. Lin gritted her teeth, stamped her foot, and made a decision: no matter how difficult it was, she would find her second son's family a job in the county town. If that didn't work, she would move them to the town and leave Linjia Village, figuring that her illness would get better faster.

"Grandma, can Uncle really find a job for Mom? It's not going to be a waitress at a restaurant, is it? If so, forget it. Restaurants usually hire young girls for waitresses. Mom is too old, they won't hire her."

Perhaps it's because there are too many people needing jobs these days, leading to fierce competition for positions. Employers tend to prefer young women and men, and few companies are willing to hire people over 25.

Lin Xiazhu herself started working after graduating from elementary school at the age of sixteen. The standards for factories to recruit people were that they should be young, not shorter than 1.6 meters, have regular facial features, and be pleasing to the interviewer's eye. Only then could they take a written test, pass the written test, and then have an interview. Only those who passed the interview could be hired.

That's right, it's just about getting a job as a general worker in a factory. These hurdles are like the exams for white-collar workers, it's ridiculous.

Lin Xiazhu didn't know if other cities were like this, but in their S City, it was like this, especially in the special economic zone, where there were countless rules.

ID card, graduation certificate, health certificate, temporary residence permit, and unmarried certificate—there were so many documents that Lin Xiazhu was rejected every time she entered the factory.

Why? Because the health certificate requires a vision test, and she was blind in one eye, so she was immediately disqualified.

Yes, there's also Lin Chacha. In her past life, she was lame in one leg and no one wanted to hire her, so she could only farm in the countryside.

"You wish! It's a dream job. It's about carrying bricks on a construction site. Although it's tough, it's still city work. Your mother always wants to go to the city, so let her endure some hardship first. Use carrying bricks as a stepping stone. Once we have money, we can find an easier job to do properly."

In short, we must find work for Zhao Xiaolian, otherwise the eldest son will be caught in a dilemma – whether he helps her or not.

"Grandma, my mom's not thinking straight anymore, and you dare to let her go to the construction site? Aren't you afraid something will happen?" Lin Xiazhu disapproved of the old lady's actions.

"...I told you it was just going too far, you brat, mind your own business." Old Mrs. Lin cursed and left with a sullen face.
