Chapter Thirty-Three: Clothes Don't Need to Be Too Pretty

"You have a problem with that?" Lin Xiazhu put the hoe and other things into the dustpan, glanced at Yan Xin, and said, "If you have a problem, keep it to yourself. Do you even want to keep the clothing store open?"

Yan Xin pouted and immediately lowered her body by three inches. "I'll keep quiet, don't be angry, you must open the clothing store."

It's an eyesore. If Yan Xin herself were to do this pouting gesture, it would be quite charming, but when Zhao Xiaolian does it, it's rather indescribable.

Lin Xiazhu silently looked away and quickly walked away.

"What are you running away from? Don't try to fool me. You'd better get the shop open quickly." Yan Xin stomped her foot, so angry she was almost internally injured.

Considering that Xiao An's leg is still in a cast and he will need at least 100 days to recover before he can walk again, Lin Xiazhu's plan to go into the mountains was temporarily shelved.

Originally, she wanted to leave Xiao An, Lin Xiaoxue, and Lin Taozi in town for Yan Xin to look after while she and Lin Chacha went into the mountains. However, Lin Taozi refused to stay and insisted on following her.

Xiao An refused to stay behind and pitifully begged her to take him with him, tears welling in his eyes. He heard Xiao An's tearful little voice calling out, "Sister, sister, don't leave Xiao An behind. Xiao An will be very obedient. Xiao An can do housework and has many other skills. Sister, don't leave Xiao An behind."

Oh dear, Lin Xiazhu's heart ached terribly from crying. Oh well, she should take good care of the little one first. The little one only feels safe when he's by her side.

It was worth the more than three thousand yuan she spent and the care she received over the days. I feel a little gratified and a little proud.

But thinking about how such a beautiful baby, after all the hard work of taking care of him, I have to give him back to someone else, I feel a little empty inside.

"Xiao An, do you remember anything, like your parents or grandparents? Do you remember their names?" Lin Xiazhu asked casually.

But Xiao An felt a sudden panic, thinking that Lin Xiazhu didn't want him anymore and wanted to send him away. His eyes suddenly dimmed, and his expression became desolate and sad.

Lin Xiazhu: "..." No, she couldn't bear to see Xiao An looking so pitiful, afraid of being abandoned but not daring to say it.

Seeing the hint of accusation in Xiao An's eyes, Lin Xiazhu felt like a heinous, heartless villain. How could she possibly hurt Xiao An?

This child is so fragile and vulnerable; we can only protect him and not upset him further.

"Don't be sad, it's not what you think. I'm not abandoning you. I'm just worried about your family. I don't mean anything by it. Don't overthink it. You can stay here as long as you like. No one will kick you out."

Lin Xiazhu held Xiao An in her arms and gently coaxed her.

Xiao An nestled in her arms, and where Xiao An couldn't see, a faint smile subtly curved her lips, her peach blossom eyes shining brightly.

With Chacha's help, the soil in the yard was turned over in less than a morning. Yan Xin followed behind Chacha with a hoe and didn't move much. Although she was sweating profusely under the sun, she felt a great sense of relief.

She decided to treat Chacha better from now on. Chacha was simply a little genius at farm work; she could learn to do things just by looking at them. She was so capable.

"Alright, just put the vegetable seeds down and water them," Lin Chacha put down the hoe, went into the main room, took off her straw hat, and picked up a bowl to pour herself some water.

Yan Xin strode in, took off the same straw hat, and deftly snatched the bowl, poured a full bowl of cold water, and handed it to Cha Cha, being extremely attentive.

"Cha Cha, have some water. You've had a really tough day. Are your arms sore? Let me massage them for you."

"...No need, this little bit of work is nothing, I'm fine." Lin Chacha took the water and drank it all in one gulp, then gave Yan Xin a deep look, as if she were looking at a 'crazy person'.

Yan Xin didn't care what she thought; she was determined to stick with this powerful figure and join her side to face the unknown farm work together.

Seeing that the soil in the vegetable garden in the yard had been turned over, Lin Xiazhu said, "We'll sow the vegetable seeds this evening. The sun is too strong now. I'll go cook dinner. You guys rest first."

"Sister, let me help you." Lin Chacha is never idle; the word 'lazy' never exists in her mind.

"No need," Lin Xiazhu refused without thinking, but then paused at the kitchen door. "Chacha, come here."

After Lin Chacha came over, he took out two yuan from his pocket and handed it to her, saying, "Go and buy six tubes of snow cream, the kind that costs two mao. Keep the rest of the money and save it for your own pocket money."

"Then I'll buy a dime's worth of snow cream." Lin Chacha thought that way she could eat two sticks by herself, but then asked, "Sis, how much money will we have left after buying the snow cream?"

She hadn't been to school yet and wasn't very good at math. Lin Xiazhu pursed her lips and smiled, saying, "We can still get eight mao in change. Let's buy two mao a piece of Chacha. The one-mao ones aren't very tasty."

Even the cheapest snacks are made with saccharin and coloring, which are bad for your health.

After hesitating for a moment, Lin Chacha nodded. What her older sister said was right. She would buy two cents' worth then.

"I want to go too, Second Sister, wait for me!" Lin Xiaoxue heard them talking upstairs and chased after them with her short legs.

"I want to eat too, wait for me, boohoo..." Lin Taozi was too small to catch up, and had to crawl down the stairs. She cried anxiously.

"Don't worry, everyone gets a share. Peach and Big Sister are playing in the kitchen together. How about Big Sister cooks you some eggs?" Lin Xiazhu picked up Lin Peach and walked into the kitchen.

Upon hearing that there would be eggs to eat, Lin Taozi immediately stopped crying. For her, as long as there was something to eat, she was fine with it and wasn't picky. "I want to eat eggs."

"Not only do we have eggs to eat, but we also have meat. Today we're having pork bone stew with soybeans." Nowadays, people in town prefer to eat meat. Bones are heavy and don't have much meat, so nobody likes to eat them.

Don't talk about calcium supplements or anything like that; people don't understand. Eating your fill is the most important thing.

The butcher cleaned the pork bones thoroughly, leaving them as pure bones with no meat on them, and sold them cheaply.

As a reborn person, Lin Xiazhu naturally knew the importance of pork bones. In about ten years, as everyone's lives improved, they would start taking calcium supplements like city dwellers, and pork bones would be much more expensive than meat.

I remember that in the last two years of her life, pork prices soared to the point that people could hardly afford to eat pork anymore. Pork once rose to more than 30 yuan per kilogram, and spare ribs to more than 40 yuan per kilogram.

Pork is now only 1.8 yuan per pound, and pork bones are 2 yuan a basin. What's even more remarkable is that the pigs in Shanhe Town are now domestic pigs, which have never eaten feed.

It was incredibly delicious, with absolutely no fishy or gamey taste. Lin Xiazhu would buy a big pot of it every day to make soup, and she was so happy.

Since she couldn't go into the mountains to collect local products, Lin Xiazhu decided to open a clothing store first. People nowadays are very frugal and wouldn't buy more than two pieces of clothing a year unless they were worn out. After all, rural people usually spend their time either working in the fields or chopping firewood in the mountains.

Clothes don't need to be fancy, they just need to be durable, so clothing stores are destined to have a bad business. Now, apart from the tailor Zhao Xiaolian's second spring in her previous life, there isn't a single store selling ready-made clothes in Shanhe Town.

This can be considered an opportunity.

Yan Xin, being pampered and spoiled, could only sit in a clothing store with few customers and drift through life.

At least enough to make a living.
