Chapter Twenty-Seven: Even Sleeping Isn't Peaceful

The doctor said the child is fine now, but the problem is that his family can't be found.

"How long until he's discharged? What are the police's plans? Will he be sent to a welfare home?" Lin Xiazhu's mind started to ache again.

"If we can't find his family, he'll have to be sent to an orphanage unless someone is willing to adopt him." The doctor looked at Lin Xiazhu and swallowed back what he was about to say.

You can't just let one child adopt another, can you?

When Lin Xiazhu returned, she heard Lin Chacha and the others chattering away.

"You don't have a name, how about I give you one? My name is Cha Cha, and you can be called Ye Ye."

"My name is Peach, and you can be called Pear, okay?" Peach said innocently.

"I think we should just call her Xiao Shuang," Xiao Xue suggested, coming up with a terrible idea.

"No, no, I think we should name him Yan Haoyu, Yan Beicheng, Yan Yishen, Yan Chenxi..." Yan Xin rattled off a bunch of Mary Sue male lead names.

Lin Chacha, Lin Xiaoxue, and Lin Taozi: "Why does he have the surname Yan?"

Yan Xin: "..." Of course, it's because her surname is Yan.

The little boy closed his eyes, his long eyelashes fluttering slightly. Annoyed by the noise from these people, he wouldn't pay any attention to them. Sigh, when will my sister come back?

He fell asleep quickly, and then dreamed of the years he spent as a ghost.

Before becoming a ghost, he remembered that his adoptive parents died in accidents one after another. At that time, his name was Gu Mingxuan and he was six years old. Later, his uncle and aunt took away the house left to him by his adoptive parents and beat and scolded him every day.

He was always hungry and had to do a lot of housework. He was so obedient and well-behaved, but when he was nine years old, his uncle and aunt still sold him.

That day, he fainted after eating the porridge his aunt gave him. When he woke up, he was on a train. The train traveled for many days, and he was taken to a small county town by a bad uncle. He was unfamiliar with the place and was very scared.

But he dared not show it. As soon as the bad uncle lowered his guard, he would run away as soon as he had a chance. He knew that the bad uncle was chasing him, so he dared not look back or stop.

He ran for a long time, and his shoes disappeared. Then, at a bend in the road, he tripped over a stone and fell. Before he could get up, a truck came and hit him.

He was in excruciating pain and was bleeding profusely. A crowd gathered to watch the spectacle. In his hazy state, he seemed to see the wicked uncle. Seeing that he was about to die, the wicked uncle turned pale with fright and ran away when no one was paying attention.

He didn't know how much time had passed when he found himself floating in mid-air, but his body was still lying in a pool of blood. He wanted to go back into his body, but he couldn't.

He heard people say he was dead, and he cried sadly, but he had no tears. Later, his body was carried away and placed in the hospital morgue, where he stayed.

A few days later, he saw his body being carried up the mountain and buried. After that, he wandered around for many years and no one knew where he had ended up.

He has been to many places, from remote rural areas to big cities, and he has learned a lot, but he is still alone. No one can see him, and no one can hear him. He is so lonely.

Until one day, he was suddenly pulled away by a powerful, invisible force. After a period of dizziness, he found himself back at the place where he had the car accident.

He floated in mid-air like a bystander, looking at himself covered in blood on the ground with a bewildered expression. The same people who had watched him before were still around him, and no one came to his rescue.

Strange, wasn't he already dead? Wasn't his body buried on the mountain? How come we're back to the day of the car accident?

Then he saw a woman squeeze into the crowd. As soon as she stood up, he, on the ground, crawled a few steps and then grabbed her feet tightly.

Gu Mingxuan: "..."

Later, the woman called for help to save him and paid his medical bills. Then he saw himself being wheeled out of the operating room, and the doctor said he had been saved.

He was still in a daze when suddenly a force pulled him into his body.

When he woke up again, he knew he had come back to life. It was that older sister who had helped him. If she hadn't paid his medical bills, he would have been sent back to the morgue.

"He can't even sleep peacefully, he must be having nightmares, poor child." Lin Xiazhu took a towel to wipe the cold sweat from the child's forehead and couldn't help but sigh again.

"Why are you sighing? If you really pity him, then adopt him. It's not like you can't afford to raise him. You must have made a lot of money from that ginseng, right?" Yan Xin said with certainty. Although she was spoiled, she wasn't completely ignorant.

Although she knew nothing about farm work, she had eaten a lot of good food in her previous life, so she knew about valuable tonics and medicinal herbs, at least in terms of price.

After all, she often buys supplements for her grandparents and maternal grandparents.

Lin Xiazhu was stunned for a moment after hearing Yan Xin's words, and then suddenly realized, "Yes, I've already spent a lot of money, so what's a little more? It's not like I'm short of money."

Since my conscience is bothering me and my compassion is overflowing, why not just take the child in and let him go home once his family is found?

After thinking it through, Lin Xiazhu, being a woman of action, immediately went to the Public Security Bureau to discuss with the police officers about taking the child in first.

"That's great! Your family has agreed?" The police officer breathed a sigh of relief; otherwise, they really wouldn't know where to put the child for the time being.

Because Changhe County doesn't have an orphanage; only the city has one.

“My whole family agrees, even my mom agrees.” Lin Xiazhu chuckled. Actually, whether Yan Xin agrees or not makes no difference.

After everything was settled, Lin Xiazhu announced, "We'll book a room at a nearby hotel. You can sleep there tonight and come here to keep me company during the day..."

After thinking for a moment, Lin Xiazhu gave the child a nickname, "Pei Xiao'an, yes, from now on we'll call you Xiao'an, okay?" May you always be safe and sound.

“Sister.” Xiao An’s clear eyes sparkled, it seemed she had accepted the nickname.

"Besides calling me 'sister,' can you say anything else? Did you hit your head?" Lin Xiaoxue said this on purpose because Xiao An's head was still wrapped in gauze.

Xiao An's eyes dimmed, and he slowly lowered his head. He remembered everything. He was very smart. He learned a lot when he was a ghost.

But he couldn't tell her, because if he did, his sister would definitely abandon him.

Lin Xiazhu's heart clenched as she watched. The doctor said that Xiao An had suffered a severe head injury and had lost his memory. This was the best possible outcome. The doctor had been worried that he would become mentally dull, but fortunately, apart from the memory loss, he hadn't become stupid.

"Xiaoxue, speak properly, or you'll be punished by not being allowed to eat dinner tonight."

Lin Xiaoxue pouted and looked at Yan Xin. Yan Xin quickly turned her face away. Don't look at her. She herself needs Lin Xiazhu's help. How can she help others?

Lin Xiazhu ignored Lin Xiaoxue and continued, "We won't go back to town for the next few days. We'll go back together after Xiao An is discharged from the hospital."
