"And who is this comrade?"
Jiang Wanqing looked at Du Heng. Judging from her appearance, this middle-aged woman didn't seem like someone who could participate in work-related discussions. Could she be a relative of Du Heng or something?
"Oh, this is Aunt Yang. Let's go to the family compound first to discuss the details."
Cheng Ran frowned, somewhat unwilling. It was his first time meeting Du Heng. Although the guy did resemble Du Ming somewhat, he gave Cheng Ran a very uncomfortable feeling.
He and Jiang Wanqing exchanged a glance, thinking that it wouldn't be good if it really was related to her work and interfered with her plans.
So he got in the car anyway, and drove from the small park to the residential compound, which was only a five-minute drive away.
As soon as we got out of the car, Aunt Yang followed us inside. There were many people and eyes in the residential compound, and we hadn't even entered the house yet, so there were some things we couldn't say in front of everyone.
Back at her home, Jiang Wanqing went to pour tea for the guests, but Du Heng started the conversation first. He shook Cheng Ran's hand, his words full of gratitude.
"Commander Cheng, I've come today for a very important reason: to personally thank you for saving my brother. If it weren't for you, he probably wouldn't be alive and kicking right now. I feel very guilty that you were injured while trying to save him."
"Come, have some tea."
Jiang Wanqing brought over the tea and overheard Du Heng's words. Was he here to thank Cheng Ran? If so, then it's not a big problem.
You can't hit someone who's smiling, and Cheng Ran had nothing to say about Du Heng's gratitude towards him; he could only manage a slight twitch of his lips.
"It's all in the past, and I appreciate your gratitude."
"Oh, that won't do. A verbal thank you isn't enough. Although you'll definitely receive a commendation and bonus from above, what's mine is mine. Last time, I had Du Ming confiscate the money from you, so this time I specially brought Aunt Yang along. It's definitely something you need."
Oh no… Jiang Wanqing’s bad premonition grew even stronger.
Sure enough, she could see Cheng Ran's expression changing, becoming somewhat gloomy. But Du Heng wasn't familiar with him and didn't know what this meant, so he continued talking eloquently.
"Commander Cheng, Aunt Yang is a seasoned and experienced old lady..."
Jiang Wanqing quickly interrupted him: "Comrade Du, you should have some tea. There's no need to say anything else. We have other things to do later. You should take your people and go back to where you came from."
She had been trying her best to remind him not to continue, otherwise Cheng Ran would really get angry.
But he didn't seem to understand Jiang Wanqing's meaning, thinking she was afraid of trouble, and instead introduced Aunt Yang even more enthusiastically.
“I made a suggestion to you last time, Comrade Jiang, but you didn’t give me a reply. I guess you’re new here and don’t know any reliable aunties yet, or you have other concerns. But it’s okay. I’ve brought someone to you today. Aunt Yang is good at cooking, washing clothes, and taking care of people. I’ll pay her monthly salary. She will take care of Commander Cheng. That way, Comrade Jiang, you can work with peace of mind and won’t have to rush around.”
The more Du Heng talked, the more convinced he became of his point. He even thought that his thoughtfulness would surely persuade Jiang Wanqing, and that even Cheng Ran would find it understandable.
Who knew... Suddenly, with a bang, Cheng Ran smashed a teacup, his face full of malice, pointing at Du Heng.
"Get out! I don't need any auntie. Go back to where you came from!"
"Commander Cheng, you've misunderstood, I..."
He was surprised by this reaction and tried to explain, but Cheng Ran's resistance was very strong.
"So it was you who came up with the idea... Hmph, Du Ming's brother, I saved your brother's life, and you want mine?"
"Commander Cheng, why would you think that way? I'm doing this for your own good. Aunt Yang is taking care of you..."
"Enough!"
Jiang Wanqing stopped him from continuing and quickly pushed him and Aunt Yang out.
She turned back to comfort Cheng Ran: "I'll send them out first and come back soon. Calm down and don't do anything rash."
She hurriedly led the person out. Aunt Yang was in a daze after receiving the money to do the job, and Du Heng was even more confused. He didn't expect Cheng Ran to be like this in real life, with a bad temper and easily provoked.
To put it bluntly, besides his status, what else does this person have that makes him worthy of Jiang Wanqing?
"Comrade Jiang, what's going on? I only brought Aunt Yang along out of kindness, how could Commander Cheng..."
He kept rambling on, but Jiang Wanqing was already getting annoyed.
"Didn't I tell you that I'm not considering finding a nanny right now? Comrade Du, I really didn't expect you to be such a self-willed person. I thought you were a smart person, but it seems I didn't understand you. I won't hold today's matter against you, just don't come again. As for our cooperation... let me think about it some more."
Jiang Wanqing clearly sensed that Cheng Ran had developed hostility towards Du Heng. If she continued to have contact with him, even if it was just work-related, it would cause even greater family conflicts.
"How could this happen, Comrade Jiang? Did I do something wrong? If so, I can make it up to you..."
"The most outrageous thing you did was not understand human language. I don't know what your intentions were today, whether it was good or bad. You should take the person away quickly. I need to go back and comfort my husband. He is in a very bad mood because of the injury. If he develops other psychological problems, can you, the brother of the person you rescued, really feel at ease?"
Jiang Wanqing's question struck a nerve with Du Heng, and his eyes flickered.
He remembered Jiang Wanqing saying not to mention finding a nanny again, but he was just trying to give her more time...
It seems he was too impatient, trying to quickly detach the other person from their dependence, which backfired...
"Alright, I'm sorry, Comrade Jiang. I meant well but things went wrong. It won't happen again. I'm really sorry about what happened today, but please reconsider our cooperation."
"I understand. You should take your men and leave now. I don't have time to say anything more to you."
Jiang Wanqing's eyelids kept twitching. Before she could even see Du Heng off, she turned around and went home.
As soon as she entered, she was hit by the stench of blood. She saw Cheng Ran self-harming and screamed as she ran over to throw the shards of porcelain from his hand.
"What are you doing!" She covered his cut hand. "Why did you do something so stupid? Let's go to the hospital..."
He grabbed her hand and shook his head: "I'm tired. I don't want to be a burden to anyone. The hospital can't cure me."
"Cheng Ran!"
Jiang Wanqing was very annoyed and shouted his name loudly.
"You know what you're saying! What happened today was just an accident. I don't think you're a burden! You want to punish me for what others have done? Do you think that's fair? Don't you think about me? Don't you think about our daughter? You're not terminally ill, so what's the big deal about trying to kill yourself? Don't tell me I misjudged you! You didn't even falter when you almost lost your life, but now..."
