Chapter 162 Foresight

Fortunately, before Jiang Wanqing left the Beijing area, she finally received some good news that gave her a chance to breathe a sigh of relief.

After Cheng's father smoothed things over, he told her that he could give her a maximum of one hour to see Cheng Ran, which happened to be the day before she was to leave.

Because he is not a criminal, he is not in a police station or prison, but in a temporary custody facility within his workplace.

As they walked along, they saw many teams training, and the soldier leading the way didn't forget to comfort her.

"Sister-in-law, you can rest assured. Battalion Commander Cheng is just under guard, not imprisoned. He's being treated well and has been given good food and drink. Once the matter is cleared up, he'll be released."

As he spoke, he led Jiang Wanqing to the front of a building that looked very serious. There were guards there, and she had to show various credentials before she could enter.

"Thank you. Do you know how far along the investigation is?"

"I don't know about that, it's not really our responsibility. When you go inside later, you can have a good chat with Battalion Commander Cheng. Look, it's this room."

The person in charge of guarding the door took out the key, opened the door, and the two of them stepped back to make way for Jiang Wanqing to go in.

Having not seen each other for quite some time, Jiang Wanqing hesitated and felt nervous at the door.

"Sister-in-law? You can go in now," someone reminded her.

"Oh, okay."

She clenched her fingers, then released them, pushed open the door, and went inside.

As the intense sunlight outside suddenly entered the dimly lit environment inside, Jiang Wanqing couldn't help but close her eyes.

The door behind her closed, and as her eyes adjusted to the light inside, they slowly scanned the surroundings.

"Cheng Ran?"

"ah!"

When her arm was grabbed, Jiang Wanqing instinctively cried out. Turning around, she saw the man she had been longing for day and night. Without hesitation, she threw herself into his arms.

"You scared me to death! Why didn't you say anything? Do you know how much I missed you!"

Before seeing him, Jiang Wanqing always thought she was very strong and would never shed a tear. But at this moment, all those thoughts were thrown to the back of her mind. All her resilience and self-control vanished, and she burst into tears the moment she hugged him.

Cheng Ran felt the same way. From the moment she entered, smelled her scent, and heard her voice, he wanted to hold her in his arms, but he was afraid that his current appearance was too sloppy and that his voice would sound too weary.

"I'm sorry... I startled you."

She hugged him tightly: "Turn on the light, I want to see you."

"I look unkempt with my stubble right now," Cheng Ran said in a low, hoarse voice.

"That's perfect, let me see what you look like when you're not good-looking, because I won't be able to see it again later."

Jiang Wanqing let go of him and slowly led him to the back wall, where she found the light switch and turned it on.

The dim light bulb flickered twice before settling down, and then slowly grew brighter.

As he said, he did grow a beard, but it wasn't unkempt; it was just some bluish stubble. He was a bit thinner and his skin was a bit whiter. Overall, he looked more handsome than before.

Hmm... Jiang Wanqing cupped his cheeks with satisfaction and placed a kiss on his lips.

"Who says it's not good-looking? Its flaws don't detract from its overall beauty."

Cheng Ran finally smiled. Although he didn't say it, he was always afraid that the person he loved would dislike him. Now he was finally relieved.

He took her hand, kissed it briefly, and then stopped, afraid that his stubble would prick her.

The room had a chair, a bed, and a desk. He pulled out a stool for her to sit down.

"How's it going outside lately? They haven't been giving you any trouble, have they?"

She pursed her lips and shook her head: "It's alright."

He wouldn't believe her if she said there wasn't any trouble at all, so she chose a compromise.

"Oh, by the way, I came to see you because there's something I need to tell you."

"Okay, go ahead."

His expression was calm, as if nothing could stir any emotion within him.

She bit her lower lip, looked up at him, and said, "You and Guo Xueyun were engaged, and now the Guo family is using this to accuse your family of breaking their promise."

His expression changed abruptly, and he was about to open his mouth to explain when she pressed her index finger against his lips.

“Your parents told me that this engagement was arranged with the Guo family without your knowledge. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to explain anything to me. We are all victims. Also… there may be people who come to you to investigate this matter. You should be prepared.”

She explained things clearly and logically, and Cheng Ran's eyes gradually calmed down as he gently stroked her hair.

"Thank you, I understand."

"And..." she took a breath, "I'm leaving the Beijing area for a while tomorrow. If you can leave beforehand, don't look for me. I'll be back as soon as I'm done."

"Go back to Xiyang Village to settle accounts with Jiang Jianwei and his wife?"

Yes and no.

"How so?"

Seeing her lower her head, looking somewhat downcast, he had a bad feeling. He braced his arm against the back of the chair and asked her with concern.

She was silent for a few seconds, then gave a bitter smile.

"Jiang Jianwei and his wife are dead."

Silence... Utter silence. Cheng Ran's pupils dilated in shock. Even his calmest heart was shaken, because he knew that meant there was no way to prove anything!

His hands gripped the back of the chair tightly. In the past two days, he had vaguely heard from his close comrades about the consequences if he were convicted...

Jiang Wanqing took his hand, her sincere eyes filled with remorse.

I will definitely clear your name and get you out of here!

Cheng Ran took a breath, licked his dry lips, smiled, and comforted her in return.

"It's alright, this isn't a capital offense. I didn't do it. At most, I'll be demoted and transferred out of Beijing."

His optimism stung Jiang Wanqing, making her even more determined to clear his name of the false accusations.
