The air fell silent. Mo's mother's eyes were fixed on Hong Xing the moment she saw him. He stood there, unsure whether to leave or stay. Jiang Wanqing gave him a wink.
He bowed slightly and greeted her politely, "Hello, Auntie, it's nice to see you again."
"Yes, we just met a couple of days ago!" Mother Mo's smile was somewhat unpleasant.
No wonder she felt that figure was familiar; wasn't that the young man who sold mountain products at the market back then?
"A couple of days ago?"
Hong Xing was stunned. Just as Jiang Wanqing was about to explain to him, Mo's mother directly hit the nail on the head.
"You and my Molly are dating, right?"
Upon hearing this, he couldn't help but swallow hard, unsure of what to do with his hands.
"Auntie, I..."
"Come out with me for a moment. I don't want to say anything unpleasant in front of a woman who has just given birth."
As Mo's mother walked out on her own, Jiang Wanqing sensed a hint of resentment from her.
Given her relationship with Hung Hing and with Molly, it's impossible for her not to know that they're dating. But when Molly's mother asked her just now, she kept giving evasive answers. It's impossible for her not to be angry.
But Jiang Wanqing was genuinely kind to Mo Li and respected her a lot. Considering that Mo Li had just given birth, Mo's mother didn't want to blame her.
"Sister-in-law, I'll go out for a bit." Hong Xing put his things down, his expression somewhat grave.
Perhaps he had already foreseen what he was about to face.
“It’s okay, just be sincere. Molly’s mom isn’t an unreasonable person.”
"Yes, I know."
After hiding for so long, they were finally discovered. Despite the tension, Hung Hing also breathed a sigh of relief, feeling like they were finally seeing the light of day. Although they didn't know what the outcome would be, at least they had a reason to face things head-on.
He gently closed the door and went with his mother to a quiet spot at the end of the corridor.
She cut to the chase: "How long have you been with Molly? When did you meet? What's your family situation like? I need to know all of this!"
The thought that her daughter had been secretly with him for so long without telling her caused Mo's mother a heart-wrenching pain. As a mother, how could she not want her daughter to be happy?
Hung Hing hesitated for a moment, thought about it, took a deep breath, and decided to tell the truth.
“Auntie, I met Molly when she was sent to the countryside. I pursued her. My hometown is in the countryside. I was discharged from the army after being injured in the line of duty. I have younger siblings and an elderly mother at home…”
He briefly explained the situation, feeling that he had revealed his most shameful side.
When he looked up again, he saw that there was no disgust on Mo's mother's face, but rather sympathy and pity, but that was all.
She sighed. "I don't approve of you being with Molly."
Just as he had imagined, if it were in the past, he might have calmly accepted the verdict, but now he has his own career and is getting more and more in sync with Molly.
If he agrees to leave Molly without any effort, she will definitely be angry when she finds out.
So after thinking about it, he decided to give it a shot.
“Auntie, I know my family’s circumstances are not a good match for Molly. She is such a wonderful and outstanding person, and she deserves better. Back when I was selling mountain products at the market, I didn’t even dare to get close to her. I always avoided her, afraid of hurting her. But she was braver than me. She didn’t talk to me about love, but encouraged me to have my own career and plans. With the help of my sister-in-law, I am now managing the factory and earning a considerable income. I think I can give Molly the life she wants. Please give me a chance.”
He was so sincere, he practically laid his heart bare, and it has to be said that Mo's mother was slightly moved.
But she glanced at his crippled fingers and his face, which wasn't handsome, but rather honest and upright.
"Let me be honest, and maybe my thoughts aren't exactly aboveboard, but I still want to say this: I know my daughter is outstanding. It's fine for her to run a small factory with you now, but there's a hierarchy of social classes, and I want her to have a government job, marry a man of similar ability, and live a harmonious life with children. You don't fit that description. If I'm not mistaken, your education isn't as good as Molly's, and your family situation is definitely more complicated than you make it out to be, right? You'll be responsible for more than just providing a good life for my daughter. Even if you become wealthy, you'll have to support your entire family. I'm sure you understand that. If my daughter marries you, she'll have to share that responsibility with you. I don't want her to be so burdened, do you understand?"
Mother Mo spoke at length, earnestly and sincerely, without uttering a single word of nonsense, nor any that Hung Hing could refute.
Indeed, his family was poor to begin with, and even if he becomes rich, he may not be able to give all of it to his own family, as he will also have to take care of his relatives back home.
Once people back home know he's become successful, there's a constant stream of relatives who need to help him out; that's how everyone in their large family has always lived.
But Molly's family was different. She was pampered and spoiled by her parents since childhood. Going to the countryside was probably the hardest thing she had ever experienced. She had never experienced a complicated family...
Hung Hing lowered his head slightly, looked down, and remained silent.
"Auntie, I understand what you mean. Please give me some time, and I will give you an answer."
"Okay, I believe you. I can tell you're a reliable person, but my daughter wants to marry someone who is just as good as her in every way, someone who is her equal. It's impossible for you two to break up immediately. So, I'll give you at most half a month. By then, I need Molly to go home and find a man she can entrust her life to. Can you do that?"
Hong Xing's heart was clenched with pain. Could he say he couldn't do it? But what good would it do? Presumably, Mo's mother would only use even tougher measures to stop them from being together, and then they would probably lose even the slightest bit of initiative.
He closed his eyes and nodded: "Okay."
Jiang Wanqing didn't know what they talked about, only that neither of them went to her hospital room again.
After she recovered, she returned to the factory for the first time and heard from Yue Shuzhen that Hongxing and Molly were in trouble and making a scene, and that Yue Shuzhen should go and try to persuade them.
“They were fine before, but these past few days they’ve been acting like enemies, not saying a word and using us as messengers. Something must have happened. Wanqing, you’re closer to them, go and try to talk to them.”
Jiang Wanqing's heart skipped a beat, and she instantly recalled the scene of Mo's mother at the hospital that day.
After hesitating for a moment, he went to see Molly. He knew that Hung Hing was a tight-lipped person and wouldn't say anything, so he had to start with her.
But when she saw Molly and was about to ask, Molly remained silent.
"Wanqing, you don't need to say anything more. Hung Hing has changed its mind."
