Without needing to guess, Jiang Wanqing knew who Huanren was talking about. Apart from that couple, no one else would make such a fuss.
After listening, she pinched the bridge of her nose, lowered her head, and sighed.
"Thank you, but let them be. They're like grasshoppers in autumn, they can't pull off anything!"
For Jiang Wanqing, Xue Gang and Guihua posed no threat to her. She had no leverage over them and had nothing to worry about. As for meeting Huanren privately, she also thought it was unnecessary.
There was a long silence on the other end of the phone. Just as she was about to end the call, Huanren spoke again, but this time he changed the subject.
"Wanqing, um... actually, besides your matter, I have some things about Qin Meng that I want to tell you."
"Tell me? I heard you two are getting along really well lately. You can just tell her what you want to say directly."
She frowned, sensing that he had other motives, and dared not give in, lest she be misunderstood and cause trouble.
"To be honest, I told her today, and she seemed very sad, so... I'm afraid she might do something rash. You and she are very good friends, so if you tell her through her, maybe she'll be able to accept it more easily."
She opened her mouth, about to answer, when Molly pushed open her office door, took a sip of water, put her hands on her hips, and waved her hand.
"Wanqing, I have to tell you, Qin Meng, she..."
Jiang Wanqing pointed to the phone and made a shushing gesture, which the other party immediately understood.
"I'll talk to you later. If we're going to meet... let's meet at the state-run restaurant an hour later."
After saying that, Jiang Wanqing hung up the phone, looked up and saw Qin Meng's regretful and complicated expression. She couldn't help but get up and walk to her side to ask her.
"What happened to you? Weren't you supposed to be helping Chen Huan in Qin Meng's place? Why are you back so soon?"
"Stop talking, what help are you going to give? Qin Meng is back, and it seems like she's run into trouble. She won't say anything when we ask her, so I came back to ask you for some advice."
Upon hearing Molly's words, Jiang Wanqing gasped. Recalling what Huanren had said on the phone, she rubbed her fingers together. It seemed this matter was not simple.
She bit her lip, put her hand on Molly's shoulder, and looked serious.
"Later, come with me to see Huan Ren. It seems that Qin Meng's matter is related to him."
"Huh? Really? I knew it..." Molly pouted. "Fine, I'll go with you. I want to see how Huanren bullied Qin Meng. She's such a nice person, but she's been acting like a madwoman ever since she came back from his place!"
"Don't rush, let's find out the situation first."
"That's true."
Molly was an impatient person who was willing to go to great lengths for her friends. After get off work at the factory, the two of them went to the state-run restaurant together. When they entered, they found that Huanren was already waiting for them.
He got up and saw that Jiang Wanqing was accompanied by Molly, and the smile on his face faded.
"Wanqing, Comrade Molly, please have a seat."
But he still maintained his proper politeness and courtesy, pouring them tea.
"Comrade Huanren, I originally invited Wanqing to my house for dinner today, but you intercepted the invitation. It's not too much for me to come along and freeload a meal, is it?"
Molly, half-speaking and half-laughing, preemptively struck.
"Not at all, it's my honor to invite you all to dinner," he replied.
"I have to thank you for letting me eat out early today. I was covering for Qin Meng at the factory so she could pursue her love, but I don't know what happened, she actually went home early. You know what..."
Molly clapped her hands, deliberately bringing up the topic in a lighthearted way, and Jiang Wanqing secretly gave her a thumbs up.
"Ah, this..."
Huanren originally wanted to catch up with Jiang Wanqing first and then slowly introduce these unimportant topics, but Molly blocked his way, so he had no choice but to bite the bullet and continue.
"Me and her..." He hesitated, glancing at Jiang Wanqing from time to time, as if he didn't know how to begin.
"Didn't you want to talk to me about Qin Meng? Perfect, just get to the point. What exactly happened between you two? You were getting along so well before, what went wrong or did you have a falling out?"
Hearing that her words implied a matchmaking between him and Qin Meng, Huanren's heart sank. He took a deep breath and decided to be blunt.
“I don’t like her. I’ve been rejecting her gently before, but it only made her misunderstand. So this time I was more direct. Who knew she couldn’t accept it and ran away. I’m sorry if I hurt her, but knowing I don’t like her and continuing to accept her flirtation is not my style.”
After he finished speaking, the atmosphere fell silent, and Jiang Wanqing and Molly exchanged a glance.
"You said you don't like Qin Meng?"
"Yes, I don't like her, and I don't want her to have any more illusions about me." Huan Ren became more and more determined as he spoke, his eyes glancing at Jiang Wanqing intentionally or unintentionally.
Why?
Molly scratched her head, utterly bewildered. To her friends, the two were a perfect match in every way, and they had even begun to imagine what their wedding would be like. But Huanren actually said he didn't like Qin Meng?!
"Yes, you should at least give Qin Meng a reason. This is too much of a blow to her."
Jiang Wanqing frowned. It's true that matters of the heart are beyond our control. You either like someone or you don't. Forcing a relationship will only lead to a resentful couple. But such dramatic ups and downs can be very damaging to the other person.
"I...I've already told her, but I also have my own privacy, is that okay?"
Ugh... It's hard to refute. Jiang Wanqing and Molly just felt a headache coming on. No one was wrong, but something just wasn't right.
"Oh no, I need to go to the restroom."
Molly waved her hand, saying she needed to pee for a bit.
Only Jiang Wanqing and Huan Ren remained at the dining table. She picked up her teacup and took a sip of tea.
A hint of nervousness flashed in his eyes as he tentatively spoke.
"Wanqing, about me and Qin Meng..."
"Jiang Wanqing!"
Before she could finish speaking, a roaring voice suddenly rang out, and the owner of the voice walked closer to Jiang Wanqing's side; it was Cheng's mother.
She and a few of her old friends went out to eat and saw Jiang Wanqing and Huanren eating together.
"Well, you've been in the army for only a short time, and you've already hooked up with another man! No wonder you were so comfortable with him leaving! You fickle, lonely woman!"
There were other people in the restaurant. Jiang Wanqing frowned, stood up, and looked directly at Cheng's mother.
"Which eye of yours saw me seducing men? People's hearts see everything as dirty. We're just talking business. Why are you reacting so strongly? Are you familiar with seducing random men?"
"You... I'm your mother-in-law! How dare you talk to me like that!"
"Hmph, slandering people without distinguishing right from wrong, even if you are a god, I will still curse you without hesitation!"
"Alright, alright! I'll write to Cheng Ran as soon as I get back! Let him know what you've been up to at home!"
When Molly came out of the restroom and saw the mess, she returned to Jiang Wanqing's side with a bewildered look.
What happened?
