Chapter 40: A Slap in the Face

People were skeptical to some extent, but believed it to some extent. It was possible that they were doing it because of Cheng Ran, but as for Yuan Zhong's sake... well, that's another story.

"I knew it. If their own connections were useful, Xiuer and Yuan Zhiqing wouldn't have been stuck in the police station for so long."

"Yeah, I heard they got ahead of themselves by riding on someone else's coattails, tsk tsk."

"You can really get thicker and thicker skin the more you wear it down. If I had skin that thick, I would have stopped farming a long time ago."

"Hahaha……"

Whispers filled the air, and Jiang Xiu and Yuan Zhong's faces grew darker with each passing moment. Unable to contain her anger any longer, she rushed forward and raised her hand to strike Jiang Wanqing.

Before I could even touch the other person's face, I was slapped hard across the face.

"Those of you who came to the wedding banquet probably don't know this, but Jiang Xiu and Yuan Zhong held this wedding only for the money you gave them as gifts. They didn't even register their marriage."

"What?"

"Jianwei, is this true? Without a certificate, what is it?!"

"Yes, Jianwei, it's understandable that you held a banquet without getting a marriage certificate, but the way you did it was so inconsiderate. We didn't get to eat or drink properly, and we didn't even get to see the leaders. You've made Xiyang Village lose face time and time again. It's outrageous!"

Qiao Xuemei had planned everything perfectly, but she hadn't expected that not a single leader would show up at the wedding. She had originally planned to use the extravagance of the wedding to report Jiang Wanqing for abusing her connections, but now she had miscalculated.

She silently backed away, thinking to herself that it was fortunate that no one in the village knew her, so she wouldn't be embarrassed too much.

But just as she retreated to the base of the wall, intending to leave through the doorway along the edge, a hand suddenly blocked her way.

Molly smiled at her seemingly harmless: "This lady looks unfamiliar. Wanqing, do you know her?"

Her shout drew everyone's attention. Jiang Wanqing walked over meaningfully, gently pushed Qiao Xuemei from behind, and pushed her to the center of the crowd.

"This is the renowned Dr. Qiao, who can cure the dead and the disabled. How can you not broaden your horizons? Jiang Xiu has quite a bit of influence to invite such a person. You may not know, but she used her family connections to get two people out of jail. Such a person should sit at the head table at today's wedding."

Every word, every sentence, pierced Qiao Xuemei's heart. Her eyes blazed with anger, and she stood frozen in place, refusing to move toward the main table.

"Jiang Wanqing, what are you doing!" she growled.

"Of course, it's about revealing a surprise! I can't help but love this kind of scene."

For some reason, without Cheng Ran by her side, Jiang Wanqing's fighting power was stronger and she was even less martial, and Qiao Xuemei couldn't understand how things had turned out this way.

"It was you! You planned this all along!"

"Being slow to realize things is a kind of illness, don't you think, Dr. Qiao?"

The occasion and her status meant that Qiao Xuemei couldn't act as freely as she did in the family compound and the hospital. She suppressed her anger and clenched her fists.

"What a misfortune for our family! What a misfortune for our family! How could our Jiang family have such an unfilial descendant as you!"

Seeing things getting worse, Old Mrs. Gu could only try to save face by sticking out her dignity. Leaning on her cane, she publicly pointed the finger at Jiang Wanqing, her hunched body trembling as she relentlessly accused her.

"Xiuer is your sister! Without her, you wouldn't be where you are today! It's one thing for you not to know how to repay kindness, but you don't even give her the most basic respect. You will be punished! Today, I will rid the Jiang family of this scourge and beat you to death, you unfilial wretch!"

She shakily raised her cane, and Jiang Wanqing used the leverage to pull her, causing the old woman to fall heavily to the ground. Everyone gasped in surprise, and some villagers rushed forward to break up the fight.

"Forget it, Wanqing. She's your grandmother after all. We're all family, so let's not make things too ugly."

"Dear uncles and aunts, my grandmother's surname was Zeng. She died a long time ago. Before she died, she left behind these houses, which naturally belonged to my grandfather. After my grandfather died, someone forcibly occupied them and forced my parents to live in the livestock shed. Today, I want to take this opportunity to seek justice!"

"Wanqing..."

Xue He and Jiang Jianguo were both taken aback. They hadn't expected her to cause such a scene at the wedding, let alone bring up the issue of the house.

“Dad, you’re kind and easy to talk to, but I’m not. When Jiang Jianwei’s family married off their daughter, they demanded half of the dowry from us. If we didn’t give it, they threatened to kick you and Mom out. They dare to do such a disgraceful thing, so why shouldn’t I speak up?”

"Is this even possible? Why should Jianguo pay half of her dowry?"

"No wonder I heard a commotion inside the Jiang family's house when I passed by that day, talking about dowry and house. So that's what it was about."

"If that's really the case, Jianwei is too cruel. We've all seen how he and his wife have treated Jianguo's family all these years. They're utterly despicable!"

"That's not true, don't listen to her nonsense! I didn't..."

Jiang Jianwei hurriedly tried to explain, but was shoved around by his mother and wife.

"Stop talking nonsense, let's talk about the house. This house is ours, why should Jiang Jianguo step on it and shit on it?"

The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law whispered a reminder to Jiang Jianguo that they were even more shrewd when it came to the house, afraid of falling into Jiang Wanqing's trap. Being scolded a few times was nothing; what was important was not losing the house.

"Yes, how can you prove that this house belongs to your grandmother?"

"I can prove it!"

A deep, powerful voice came from the doorway, and the captain led in a man with completely white hair and beard.

"Old Party Secretary!"

Some of the older villagers recognized him at a glance and quickly came up to greet him with great enthusiasm and respect.

"What brings you here, sir? Please, have a seat."

"So many years have passed, I thought the Jiang family would have united long ago. I never expected that you, Old Sister Gu, would use Sister Zeng's things, live in Sister Zeng's things, and now that you're old, you're turning around and biting me. Even your son is with you. You're really a scoundrel. If Wanqing hadn't asked someone to invite me to come and uphold justice, I wouldn't have known that Sister Zeng entrusted her family to a heartless wretch like you!"

"Old...Old Party Secretary..."

The old man was a veteran who could have settled down and worked in a big city, but he returned to participate in the development of his hometown because he cared about it. He served as the Party Secretary of Xiyang Village for decades and knew the village's past very well.

"So you want to kick Jian Guo out?"

"No...I..."

"Xiao Wang, you speak." The old Party Secretary couldn't bear to look at Jiang Jianwei's family, so he turned his gaze away and let the brigade leader speak.

The captain nodded to Jiang Wanqing, then took out a yellowed certificate from his pocket, opened it, and showed it to everyone.

"This is the land use certificate. Wanqing's great-grandmother was approved to build a house on this land back then, and all the procedures and documents have her signature. If anyone dares to tell Jianguo to move out again, the team will not let them off the hook!"

Jiang Wanqing took the papers and walked to Jiang Jianwei's side.

"Don't even think about getting a single penny from my family from now on. Take your mother and wife and move out of the main house, or you can start your own household. Today, in front of everyone, this matter will not be settled peacefully until it is resolved!"
