Chapter Forty-Four: Another fit of madness

"Why are you walking so fast? Do you think I'm embarrassing you? Stop right there! Say something!"

Jiang Xiu had no knowledge, but she had brute strength. She quickly caught up with him, grabbed Yuan Zhong who was walking briskly, and was so angry that her eyes were blazing.

"Don't forget who you are today because of. You might just dump me in this lifetime!"

She was really anxious. Her relationship with Yuan Zhong was mainly about seduction, not attraction. If he really got tired of her, wouldn't she have gained nothing before he even became successful?

He was a grown man who was pulled backward by her force, and he was extremely embarrassed and angry, but he suppressed his anger because he remembered that she was still somewhat useful.

"I didn't mean to get rid of you, don't overthink it. The school has assigned teaching tasks, I need to go back and prepare my lessons quickly."

Hearing this answer, Jiang Xiu breathed a slight sigh of relief, but she was still worried. She was afraid that she had spoken too harshly and annoyed him, so she quickly loosened her grip and put on a coquettish smile.

"I'm sorry, I misunderstood you. I was just too anxious. Why should Jiang Wanqing get a job at the school like you!"

"Alright, stop talking nonsense. Don't you know who her husband is? Qiao Xuemei was able to use her connections to get me into the school. Is it really that difficult for a battalion commander to do this?"

Yuan Zhong thought she was ignorant and spoke to her in a bad tone. Jiang Xiu pursed her lips. That was true, but she was still unhappy. She had begged and threatened and used all her skills to get the opportunity, but Jiang Wanqing had gotten it without saying a word. She felt unbalanced.

"Hmph, so what if she gets into school? She's a dropout. All she knows is a few words. You'll still leave her far behind, as long as you listen to me."

She particularly enjoyed the feeling of controlling Yuan Zhong. The thought of him, an academic bigwig, having to oversee everything she did made her feel good. Wasn't that how he treated Jiang Wanqing in her previous life? He took her everywhere he went, giving that woman a lot of face.

Yuan Zhong frowned: "Why do you keep mentioning the future? And why are you so certain about it?"

He deliberately held a wedding without registering the marriage so he could dump her later, but she kept talking about their future, which made him a little wary.

To everyone's surprise, she then said, "Remember when I told you I consulted a master? He told me you would achieve great success in the future. We are destined for each other; I can't live without you, and you can't live without me."

She lied; no matter what, she wanted to bind the two of them together deeply!

"Don't talk about feudal superstitions outside, go back home right away."

He shook his hand, his face looking rather grim, and Jiang Xiu quickly followed.

...

When Jiang Wanqing returned from school, several children were waiting for her at the gate before she even entered the courtyard. As soon as they saw her return, they ran up to her and greeted her warmly.

"Sister Jiang, we heard that you'll be a teacher at our school in the future, is that true?"

The children's eyes lit up, staring at her intently. Jiang Wanqing pinched the cheek of the child closest to her and nodded.

"Yes, you guys are really quick with your news."

She just got back from her onboarding process, and even the kids know about it, so everyone else in the family compound must know too. Someone as composed as Cheng Ran wouldn't go around telling everyone. As for who it is…

"It was Aunt Liu who said that. She also said that Uncle Cheng's leg is crippled, and if he loses his job in the future, Sister Jiang can support the family."

"Oh? That's what she said?"

Just then, a woman who had gone grocery shopping returned and, seeing her child gossiping, quickly pulled her away.

"What does a little brat know? Go away, go away, stop talking nonsense."

"Go back now, or I'll tell your parents, and you'll be in big trouble!"

Hearing her say that, the children scattered in all directions. Jiang Wanqing didn't stop them, but stood up slightly and looked at this sister-in-law she had met a few times before.

"Hehe... The kids were just joking around. Comrade Wanqing, don't take it to heart. The organization will definitely make other arrangements for him. Don't worry, things will be alright."

These words made it hard not to overthink things, and Jiang Wanqing frowned.

"Sister-in-law, since we've come this far, please just say what you want to say. That way, I won't have to ask around when I get back. We see each other all the time, don't you think?"

"this……"

The other person lowered their eyelids and looked around.

"It's alright. If you don't tell me, I'll ask Sister Liu. She's so sure about spreading rumors, she must know a lot."

"Don't……"

The woman got scared and quickly grabbed Jiang Wanqing's hand, pulling her to the wall.

"Don't go to her. She's feeling smug right now. If you go, you'll only get ridiculed by her. Listen to your sister-in-law's advice: fortunes change, and it's only a matter of time before her husband, Lao Liu, gets promoted. It just so happens that your husband... well, anyway, don't be stubborn. It won't do you any good."

Jiang Wanqing understood what he meant. With some people being promoted, others had to leave. Cheng Ran hadn't returned to his post due to his leg injury, so someone had to take his place. This was where the advantage of being the first in line became apparent.

"Oh, I see. I understand now. Thank you, sister-in-law. You can take the child home now."

"You...you're not angry, are you?"

"Of course not, I have to go back and cook for Cheng Ran. Goodbye, sister-in-law."

Jiang Wanqing turned around and immediately turned cold. She quickly returned home, where Cheng Ran was reading a magazine she had bought.

He remained calm, even though rumors were circulating widely and he, the person directly involved, stayed calmly at home.

After she entered the room and took a sip of water, he asked her about her onboarding.

"How's it going?"

"It went quite smoothly, but... Qiao Xuemei also got Yuan Zhong arrested, so we'll probably be seeing each other frequently in the future."

Hearing this, Cheng Ran looked up: "He didn't do anything to you, did he?"

"He wanted to, but I didn't let him succeed."

"I'll let the school know..."

"Wait, there's something... When I came into the courtyard just now, I heard everyone talking about whether it's true that Liu Chang replaced you."

"Sit down first, and I'll explain it to you slowly."

"oh."

She responded and sat down beside him. His voice, like his personality, was calm and powerful, and he wasn't in a hurry.

“My leg still needs time to recover, and I can’t leave my work unattended. Liu Chang is a good person; I recommended him, so he will act as my replacement for now.”

He couldn't go into more detail, so he only touched on it briefly. Jiang Wanqing was a smart person. His job was different from others. He couldn't just think about himself; he had to consider the bigger picture.

“I have no problem with Brother Liu, but his wife is really unreasonable. Her pride in victory and her dejection in defeat are very evident, which may have an impact on you.”

"Liu Chang will handle it."

"Okay, I'll go make some soup first."

“I’ll help you. There are some nourishing herbs from Hung Hing on the shelf. Let’s stew them together.”

The soup had been simmering for three hours, and when it was served, it smelled wonderful. Jiang Wanqing thought the taste was strange, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.

She looked up at Cheng Ran and served him a bowl: "This is the first time I've cooked it like this, I don't know if it will taste good."
