Chapter Seventy-Five: Comparison

“Wanqing, come with me. You and Cheng Ran have been married for more than half a year, and we, as your elders, haven’t given you a decent gift yet.”

Cheng's mother waved to her, her expression becoming much more amiable. Without scrutinizing her closely, Jiang Wanqing thought this mother-in-law was quite nice, perhaps because of the contrast with Yuan Zhong's mother, that shrew, in her previous life.

She didn't refuse and obediently followed. Cheng's father tried to catch up, but his son stopped her.

"Come with me, I have something else to tell you."

"Dad, wait a moment, I'll take Wanqing and Mom over there."

He knew that Jiang Wanqing had just arrived at the Cheng family and might have suffered some grievances but was hesitant to speak up, so he had to prioritize her needs.

"You brat, are you afraid I'll eat your wife? Go ahead, if Wanqing loses a single hair, you can come after me." Mother Cheng said with a half-smile, and even took Jiang Wanqing's hand and patted it gently.

Jiang Wanqing could easily understand the meaning behind this. If she didn't listen to Cheng's mother at this moment, her dissatisfaction would only increase. She had just said she didn't want to be a burden, but now she had to be more considerate.

She smiled faintly and shook her head at Cheng Ran: "Go ahead, I'm not that shy."

He still frowned slightly, uneasy. "Are you sure?"

"Um."

Cheng's mother pulled her away. Cheng Ran clenched her fists and had just taken a step when her father's words pulled her back.

"If we're truly satisfied with Xueyun but not Wanqing, do you think you can escape this?"

He subconsciously raised an eyebrow and looked up: "Dad?"

"Come on, come on, look how clingy you are to your wife, you can't be apart from her for a second." Mr. Cheng waved his hand and teased her.

The couple were led to separate rooms by their parents. Cheng Ran thought his father wanted to talk to him about Jiang Wanqing in private, so he planned to take the initiative as soon as he entered the study.

Before he could even open his mouth, Cheng's father asked, "Has the injury you sustained on a mission six months ago fully healed?"

Cheng Ran didn't expect him to ask about her injury, and subconsciously glanced at her leg.

"I've fully recovered."

"Do you know that, according to your original mission plan, you might lose your life?"

"I know, thankfully... I'm lucky to be alive." He chuckled.

Fortunately, he survived, which is why he and Jiang Wanqing are where they are today. Once a person has something they care about, they start to cherish their life. He doesn't know if he will still have the courage to face death in the future.

"You're not just lucky, you have a benefactor who helped you!"

Mr. Cheng took a letter out of the drawer and handed it to him: "Take a look at this."

He opened the envelope with a puzzled look and unfolded the well-preserved letter. The contents of the letter were unrelated to the mission he was carrying out, but they indirectly saved his life.

"This is……"

"You figured it out? It was this letter that cracked the scientific research problem that the BGI team had been working on for years. You'll know what happened next—you suddenly improved your equipment..."

Mr. Cheng pointed at the letter and paced back and forth a few steps, and the room became quiet.

How did this letter end up with you?

"That's what's puzzling me too. I think since it was sent to our house, it's very likely it was meant for you, so I'm showing it to you. Do you recognize the handwriting?"

Reminded of this, Cheng Ran immediately examined the handwriting carefully. It was delicate yet unrestrained, making it difficult to tell whether it was written by a man or a woman.

He looked at it again and again, but couldn't find it to be completely familiar, so he shook his head.

"I can't figure out who it is."

“Sigh, that’s the problem. We don’t know who she is, whether she’s friend or foe. You should have that kind of keen sense.”

Indeed, Cheng Ran's eyes darkened. This matter could be a big deal or a small deal. Although it indirectly helped him, it was always better to take precautions.

"I understand, Dad. I thought..."

"Hahaha... You thought I was going to talk to you about Wanqing?" Mr. Cheng chuckled twice: "You think too little of your mother and me. Xueyun's family is a better match for us, that's true, but she's been spoiled since she was a child and is too selfish. She's not suitable for you."

Cheng Ran felt much relieved after hearing this. Although he and Jiang Wanqing didn't need his family's approval to be together, it would be better if they didn't object.

"Thank you, Dad."

"Take the letter, go back and check it. That's all, go down and have dinner."

"good."

When the father and son came downstairs, Jiang Wanqing and Cheng's mother were already seated.

He naturally sat down next to his wife. Guo Xueyun came back after watering the flowers and intended to sit down next to him, but he picked up the family's pet dog and sat on it, patting its head.

"Sweetie, eat with me."

Guo Xueyun had to get up before she could even sit down, which was undoubtedly an insult to her. She gritted her teeth and felt even more resentful towards Jiang Wanqing, who stood calmly to the side.

She swayed her hips coquettishly as she approached Cheng's mother, saying, "Auntie, there's no place for me in the house anymore."

"How could that be? Auntie has treated you like her own daughter since you were little. How could you not have a place in her life?"

“But a daughter can’t be as close as a daughter-in-law. You used to say that I should marry Brother Cheng Ran when I grew up.”

Didn't anyone tell her that such behavior was despicable? Jiang Wanqing lowered her head and smiled, which was caught by Guo Xueyun, who angrily attacked her with words.

"why are you laughing?"

"Hmm? Did I laugh? Maybe it's just my natural tendency to laugh."

A hint of embarrassment flashed across Cheng's mother's face. She moved her arm a little further away from Guo Xueyun. Saying inappropriate things in an inappropriate situation not only embarrassed herself but also dragged others down with her. How come she never noticed that Guo Xueyun was this kind of person before?

"Let's eat, everyone. I don't know if these dishes will suit your taste, Wanqing."

Before she even touched her chopsticks, Cheng Ran had already served her a lot of food, including vegetables and meat. He also put a bowl of soup on the side for her. She tasted a couple of bites and then reached for a braised fish dish on the other side.

She inadvertently revealed the jade bracelet on her wrist, which was crystal clear and had a lustrous color. Guo Xueyun was immediately shocked and stood up abruptly.

"Auntie, you gave the bracelet to her!"

"Xueyun, sit down!"

Today, after listening to her countless uncontrollable hysterias, Cheng's mother was a little disappointed and slammed her hand on the table, telling her to sit down.

"This bracelet was originally passed down from Cheng Ran's grandmother to the daughters-in-law of the Cheng family. Whoever is a daughter-in-law of the Cheng family can wear it. There is no problem with Wanqing wearing it!"

Jiang Wanqing stroked the rim of the jade bracelet, which was also a reminder to her that anyone could wear the bracelet, as long as she was a daughter-in-law of the Cheng family. She was only given it to her because of her current status.

"Guests should act like guests. You should wake up from your delusion," Cheng Ran said coldly.

Her heart was utterly pierced, and Guo Xueyun was so angry that she couldn't eat. She immediately put down her chopsticks, got up, and left in a huff.

"I'm not hungry, I'm going back now!"

"She'll come again. Let's ignore her for now. Xueyun isn't stupid, she's just confused."

Mr. Cheng stopped his wife from chasing after him. She sighed, sat up straight, and said something meaningful.

"Fate is a strange thing, but having fate alone is not enough, because living together is a long-term thing."
