Chapter Sixty-Four: I can't stand her even more

A heavy snow fell intermittently for several days, and Jiang Wanqing also stayed in the hospital for a few days. Her spirits lifted, and she occasionally exchanged a few words with Qiao Xuemei during rounds, which made things less boring.

One day, Qiao Xuemei gloated as she brought a letter, patted it in her palm, and leaned against the door.

Guess what I brought you?

Seeing how happy she was, Jiang Wanqing knew that the letter must not have been sent by Cheng Ran, otherwise she would have looked unhappy.

"Whose letter?"

"Guess." Qiao Xuemei slowly approached the bedside, about to laugh, but the letter was snatched away.

I glanced at the signature; it was sent from the Beijing area…

The letter had already been opened. Jiang Wanqing opened it directly and pulled out the letter paper. It turned out to be a letter written by Qiao Xuemei!

"Tsk tsk, Guo Xueyun's letter might just pierce your heart again."

Jiang Wanqing didn't speak, but silently finished reading the letter. Even without sound, she could feel Guo Xueyun's smugness from the words.

The letter said that Cheng Ran had finished his mission long ago, but instead of returning to his family compound, he applied for a family visit and went back to the Beijing area. He is currently at the Cheng family home with his parents, and also... developing a relationship with Guo Xueyun.

The handwriting reflected the person's character, making it unpleasant. After reading the letter, Jiang Wanqing casually put it on the cabinet.

"You... why aren't you showing any emotion? Aren't you sad? Battalion Commander Cheng isn't spending the New Year with you; she's spending it with Guo Xueyun."

Seeing no sign of disappointment or unhappiness on her face, Qiao Xuemei's expression darkened.

"Aren't you naive? Cheng Ran and I are a legally protected couple. Guo Xueyun interfered in a military marriage. Who do you think is more guilty?"

Jiang Wanqing wore a faint smile, having nothing to say about this reason.

But she didn't want to lose face in front of Jiang Wanqing, so she snorted and continued to be sarcastic.

"I think you're just faking it. I don't know how sad you are behind my back."

"How about I cry for you right now?"

"I……"

"Then I went to your hospital leaders and told them that Dr. Qiao disregarded the patients' emotions and used provocative language..." Jiang Wanqing interrupted her, raising an eyebrow.

Qiao Xuemei's lips twitched, and a breath caught in her throat.

"I'm not going to stoop to your level. I'll let you deceive yourself for a few days!"

Seeing that she couldn't win the argument with Jiang Wanqing, she left angrily and slammed the door shut.

The letter lay quietly on the bedside table. Just as Jiang Wanqing was about to pick it up and read it again, Qiao Xuemei suddenly pushed the door open and came in without any warning. She ran to the bedside in two quick steps.

"Is there anything else?"

"I hate Guo Xueyun more than you. You'd better hold onto your status as Mrs. Cheng, or I'll look down on you!"

She pointed at Jiang Wanqing and spoke in a condescending tone, but her words were completely harmless.

"What's the reason?"

Logically speaking, she and Guo Xueyun should be on the same level, so there's no reason for her to dislike them.

"Hmph, do you think this is the first time that woman has warned the women around Battalion Commander Cheng? I've even been warned by her before. That bitch, not only is she a hypocrite, but she also bullies people by relying on her family connections!"

Aren't you the same?

This question made Qiao Xuemei choke up, realizing that Jiang Wanqing was referring to her using connections to deceive Cheng Ran about his illness and to get Yuan Zhong a job at the school.

"I...I've already paid the price, and I've only done it to you, never to anyone else. Besides, you haven't done anything to me!" Qiao Xuemei argued illogically.

Seeing that Jiang Wanqing didn't speak, she blinked awkwardly and left guiltily.

This time it was completely quiet. Jiang Wanqing touched the corner of the envelope, suppressing the urge to read it one more time.

If you really care, then you're playing right into Guo Xueyun's hands...

The letter contained a mixture of truth and falsehood. Less than half a day after she received the letter, Hung Hing came to the hospital to see her, bringing her news that she already knew.

"Sister-in-law, Battalion Commander Cheng went to visit his parents in Beijing after finishing his mission. I'm sorry, he asked me how you were doing, whether it was serious or not. I told him it wasn't anything serious, so he went back. Uncle Cheng is also sick, so..."

"No need to explain. Going back to see his parents is the right thing to do, and the New Year is just around the corner..."

She forced a smile, her fingers gripping the corner of the blanket slightly.

"That's not the main reason, it's... Anyway, you have to trust Battalion Commander Cheng, he cares about you a lot, really!"

Hong Xing was so anxious that his face turned red and he didn't know what to do with his hands and feet, as if he was afraid she would suspect him.

"Then please tell him that after I am discharged from the hospital, I will go back to Xiyang Village to spend the New Year with my parents, and Molly will come with me."

"Oh? You're not spending the New Year in the courtyard?"

"Um."

"Alright, then I'll talk to Battalion Commander Cheng."

After he finished answering, the ward fell silent again. He picked up a broom and started cleaning the ward.

"I've heard that a good environment helps with recovery, let me sweep the floor for you."

"Whatever you want."

Not letting him do it would only increase his psychological burden, so Jiang Wanqing didn't stop him and picked up a book from the side to read.

He was halfway through sweeping when Jiang Wanqing casually mentioned something.

Does Cheng Ran go home every year to spend Chinese New Year with his parents?

"No, sister-in-law, Battalion Commander Cheng hasn't been back for five or six years. He rarely sees his uncle and aunt, and they don't exchange letters much. In Battalion Commander Cheng's words, the more you miss someone, the more you keep them in your heart, and ordinary correspondence is not enough to ease the pain."

"How many times has Guo Xueyun come to see him?"

Upon hearing the mention of that woman, Hung Hing immediately stood up straight, almost swearing to God, but remembering his status, he put his hands down at his sides.

"Just once. She wrote to Battalion Commander Cheng before, but he never replied. He also made excuses about work when he called. There was absolutely nothing else!"

"Why are you so nervous? I was just asking." Jiang Wanqing chuckled and took out the letter: "Take a look at this."

She had seen plenty of the trick of sowing discord; in her past life, Yuan Zhong had used this tactic many times with his mistresses.

If what the letter says is true, Guo Xueyun wouldn't have flaunted it with just a letter.

Hung Hing took the letter, read its contents with suspicion, and his expression changed drastically. He immediately explained on Cheng Ran's behalf.

“Sister-in-law, I guarantee this letter is fake! Battalion Commander Cheng returned to the Beijing area not for Guo Xueyun, but for you…”

He almost blurted it out, and Jiang Wanqing frowned as she caught the words he hastily uttered.

"For me?"

"Uh... I don't know the details, but don't worry, sister-in-law, Battalion Commander Cheng is devoted to you. There are several reasons why he returned to the Beijing area, but Guo Xueyun is not one of them!"

Hong Xing wished he could drag Cheng Ran back from the Beijing area and make him explain himself, otherwise who would he blame if his wife ran away?

His face was flushed red with anxiety, which shone through his wheat-colored skin.

He didn't dare blink, staring at her as if he wanted to rip his heart out.

Jiang Wanqing gently bit her tongue: "I understand. Tell Cheng Ran the truth about the letter, and I'll listen to his explanation when he comes back."

"That's great, sister-in-law. I knew you weren't the kind of person who would make wild guesses."
