Chapter Thirty-Five: Unable to Stay in the Village Anymore

"Cough cough..."

Jiang Wanqing was released by him, and she breathed heavily, her face flushed, her eyes looking at him with watery eyes.

He pressed on, "How do you know... this method will make my legs react?"

They had never tried this method before.

She covered her mouth, a rare hint of embarrassment on her face, and lowered her head.

"Wanqing, answer me."

He cupped her face in one hand, his thumb and forefinger gently supporting her delicate chin.

"Because you react whenever you get close to me at night, don't you realize that? And... and you still ask me."

She started stammering too. She hadn't wanted to tell him, since his leg would get better sooner or later anyway. But who knew this idiot would use self-torture to do rehabilitation training? That's why she had no choice but to tell him.

His heart clenched instantly, his throat tightened, and his eyes burned. He had no memory of what she had said.

"Did I offend you tonight?" he asked, worried that she might dislike him.

"That depends on whether you can do it."

Jiang Wanqing pursed her lips; those words had pierced his heart like a hole, and his face darkened.

What do you mean he's no good?!

"Then...why didn't you tell me sooner? You could have pushed me away, or even kicked me off the bed."

"Why would I do that?" She smiled and leaned to the side. "It's good for me if you're okay."

"You really think so?"

"Genuine or genuine."

Jiang Wanqing patted the top of his head. She had gotten up in a hurry, so her hair was still messy and her face was flushed. Cheng Ran tidied her hair and pinched her cheek.

"You won't be able to get rid of me from now on."

"Cheng Ying..."

Early in the morning, Hong Xing rushed over without even knocking, and pushed the door open. He saw the two of them in an ambiguous position, and Cheng Ran's shirt was open, revealing a certain part that was not to be ignored. He immediately turned around.

"I'm sorry, I came at the wrong time. I apologize!"

"Come in!"

Was he yelling so loudly to let everyone know? He said he was giving a self-criticism, but actually everyone was trying not to laugh. Cheng Ran told him to go inside and talk properly.

"Battalion Commander, Sister-in-law, I'm so sorry for bothering you. I'll definitely knock before entering next time." He patted the back of his head and said with a smile.

"Let's get down to business!"

Cheng Ran gave him a sharp look.

"yes!"

He stood at attention and reported to Cheng Ran in a proper manner: "The Qiao family contacted the police station and confirmed that Qiao Hongmei and the other two people were wrongly accused. They have now been released."

Upon hearing this, Jiang Wanqing's eyes flickered. Qiao Xuemei had indeed used her family connections, but what surprised her was that she had also managed to get Jiang Xiu and Yuan Zhong out of trouble.

"Did you come out today?"

"Yes, Qiao Hongmei is already on her way back to her family compound. As for my sister-in-law's cousin and that male educated youth, it seems they have also gone back to the village."

"Is there a criminal record?"

"without……"

Hong Xing answered truthfully that the Qiao family had intervened and somehow proved that Qiao Hongmei was not involved in any hooliganism, thus clearing her name completely.

"Hmph, they've completely shaken off their act." Jiang Wanqing sneered, "Doesn't it have any impact at all?"

"It has an impact. I saw Dr. Qiao moving; it seems she's sending her sister back."

It can be considered a success. Qiao Xuemei has gone to great lengths for this younger sister, presumably due to pressure from her family.

...

Jiang Xiu and Yuan Zhong returned to Xiyang Village in a disheveled state, wishing they could shrink away. They finally arrived at the Jiang family's house, rushed inside, and slammed the door shut.

"mom!"

As soon as Jiang Xiu entered the door, she let out a pitiful cry. Her mother heard the sound and came out. Seeing her daughter return safe and sound, the mother and daughter hugged each other tightly.

"You naughty girl, you're finally back! You scared me to death! Were you mistreated in there? Were you scared? Who rescued you? It was Jiang Wanqing..."

"Don't mention that bitch! She has nothing to do with us. It was a female doctor at the military hospital where Cheng Ran works who saved us. If it weren't for her, we might be in jail."

"What? What... what did you do?"

"That bitch Jiang Wanqing schemed against us! Mom, I'll make her wish she were dead! I will!"

After being released from prison, Jiang Xiu not only failed to realize her mistakes, but her hatred for Jiang Wanqing deepened.

"Don't confront her head-on. With Cheng Ran backing her, we can't win against her. If you had listened to your grandma back then and hadn't given Cheng Ran to that bitch, none of this would have happened. You... you even came back with this man. Are you trying to drive me crazy?"

After crying to her daughter, she turned around and saw Yuan Zhong still standing there, smelling of stench and covered in grime. Compared to the other educated youth, he looked like a beggar. She felt nothing but disgust.

Jiang Xiu didn't know why Yuan Zhong, whom she had specially chosen with the memories of her past life, was so useless. She wouldn't say she regretted it, but she was a little unwilling. This was her only card, and she absolutely couldn't lose to Jiang Wanqing!

"Mom, Yuan Zhong was also tricked. Don't blame him. He's going to do great things in the future."

"Pah! What a joke! You're with him... Do you know everyone knows about your affair? How are you going to clean up this mess?"

Her mother looked at her with disappointment and frustration. Why did she have to get involved with a poor and incompetent educated youth instead of a proper battalion commander? Now she had become a laughing stock, and her mother was ashamed to even go out in public.

Jiang Xiu glanced at Yuan Zhong, grasped his hand, and gritted her teeth.

"Mom, I want to marry him!"

"What...what did you say?!"

Her mother was surprised, but Yuan Zhong was even more surprised. He hurriedly shook off her hand, and seeing her face change drastically, he immediately grabbed her sleeve again, his lips twitching.

"Don't talk nonsense. Now is not the time to act impulsively."

He didn't want to marry a country woman. He planned to return to the city. Although his family wasn't as well-off as Molly's, it was definitely better than Jiang Xiu's. If he married her, he would be tied down for life, and how could he ever climb the social ladder again?

"I wasn't acting impulsively! Yuan Zhong, do you regret being with me?"

She grabbed his hand and pinched it, giving him no chance to back down. He was terrified and swallowed hard, unable to utter a word.

"Xiuer is right, there's no way to salvage this situation if they don't get married now." Old Mrs. Gu came out from inside, leaning on her cane. "Let them get their marriage certificate quickly, so they can shut those people up!"

Old Mrs. Gu was furious and resentful. There was no better man for her granddaughter to choose from than Cheng Ran, and Yuan Zhong was the only option at the moment.

"Mom, you're confused too!" Jiang Xiu's mother stamped her foot anxiously, "This boy is unreliable!"

Yuan Zhong's eyes darted around, and his face seamlessly switched to a smile.

“Auntie, I know you’re worried that I won’t take good care of Xiu’er. I also want a chance to prove myself. How about this: Xiu’er and I will have a wedding first, but we won’t register our marriage. This way, we can explain our relationship to everyone and stop the rumors. Also, you can get your wedding gift money back. Do you think this is okay?”
