Chapter Twenty-Four: Forcing Back

She looked at him without a trace of deception, her eyes full of sincerity. Cheng Ran was momentarily stunned by her resolute gaze and looked away.

She didn't care, but he did!

"Go out first, let me have some peace and quiet!"

Jiang Wanqing sighed silently. She knew he needed to calm down. He was by no means a coward, and no matter how much she said, it would have little effect. Rather than bothering him, she chose to give him some space.

After leaving, Jiang Wanqing did not leave and ignore it, but went to Dr. Gu's office. She had vaguely sensed something was wrong when she was in the ward, but she did not ask too many questions because there were many people around.

She knocked and went in. Dr. Gu's face showed no sign of relief, and upon seeing her, he appeared even more guilty and ashamed...

"Wan... Comrade Wanqing, what brings you here? Shouldn't you be in the ward taking care of Battalion Commander Cheng?"

She looked at him and said, "The conclusion you drew about him has hit him hard. He wants to be alone for a while."

Upon hearing this, Dr. Gu gripped his pen tightly. He had something on the tip of his tongue, but thinking of the consequences it would have on him, he could only swallow it back.

"sorry."

"This is not your fault. I believe you have done your best, Dr. Gu. However, I am very curious about what you told me before. Why did you come to such a serious diagnosis today in front of so many expert doctors?"

"I……"

Dr. Gu couldn't sit still and tried to get up. He was very unnatural and felt like he was sitting on pins and needles, which Jiang Wanqing noticed.

She raised an eyebrow, realizing that things were indeed not simple. Instead of asking directly, she began to probe indirectly.

"Since you're not comfortable answering, then considering we're about to be discharged, and my husband might even ruin his career because of this, may I ask you a few questions?"

Jiang Wanqing's tone was devoid of resentment or other emotions; she sounded more like an understanding family member of an injured person.

Dr. Gu had seen too many families cause trouble because they couldn't accept the diagnosis. Seeing her so understanding, his guilt almost overwhelmed him.

"Sure, just ask, and I'll answer whatever I can."

"You and Dr. Qiao are more than just colleagues, aren't you? Or is there some other connection between you?"

His eyelids twitched. He hadn't expected Jiang Wanqing to hit the nail on the head. He hesitated and struggled. He looked up at her, then lowered his eyes again.

He thought about it and realized that he had only agreed to help Qiao Xuemei keep the secret about Cheng Ran's diagnosis results. He hadn't done anything else, and even if he did tell her, it wouldn't violate anything.

He swallowed hard and replied, "Her father is my teacher. My teacher has been a great help to me in getting to where I am today since I joined the military hospital. I have always regarded Xuemei as my younger sister, although... she can be a bit absurd at times."

His answer had confirmed something, and Jiang Wanqing thought she understood. She nodded to Dr. Gu.

"Thank you, I understand. I'll go back to the family hospital with Cheng Ran in a couple of days to recuperate. If I don't recover well, I think I can still support my family with my two hands!"

She raised her sleeve to wipe away the tears she had squeezed out. Dr. Gu reached out his hand, wanting to comfort her, but kept his distance. As she turned to leave, he couldn't help but say a word of advice before she left.

"Comrade Wanqing, you...you must not lose heart. Battalion Commander Cheng is no ordinary person. A miracle will definitely happen."

He said it was certain, not possible. Jiang Wanqing, with her back to him, slightly curled her lips. Lies can be told, but someone like Dr. Gu, who has principles, will always intentionally or unintentionally reveal something. She got the answer she wanted, and that was enough.

"Thank you, Dr. Gu. I'll be going now."

She didn't linger. He already had his own difficulties, and it was already quite an achievement that he had come to this point. She didn't want to cause him any more trouble.

She had only taken a few steps outside when Qiao Xuemei, as if she knew she would be looking for Dr. Gu, stood guard outside.

"Jiang Wanqing, why are you bothering Doctor Gu?"

"Dr. Qiao is really funny. I came to thank Dr. Gu for taking care of me during this time, but you called it harassment. Do you often harass others and have a lot of experience with this kind of thing?"

"You... Hmph! A country bumpkin like you, marrying our Battalion Commander Cheng with the ambition of marrying into a wealthy family. Now that he's about to become a cripple, you're probably trying to escape, aren't you? Stop pretending!"

Qiao Xuemei's eyes were filled with venom as she stared intently at Jiang Wanqing, eager to hear from her that she was unwilling to take care of Cheng Ran for the rest of her life.

However, things didn't go as she expected. Jiang Wanqing didn't even give her a second glance and walked right past her.

"I once read a sentence in a book that said people always like to impose their own ideas on others. Dr. Qiao has shown me that."

She clenched her teeth so hard that if glares could kill, she would have pierced through Jiang Wanqing's quilt.

"I'll see how long you can keep up this act!"

She stamped her foot and walked into Dr. Gu's office, her tone not respectful at all, and she didn't even address him by name.

"Did you say something you shouldn't have to Jiang Wanqing? Have you forgotten what I told you?"

"Xuemei, what do you mean by this? Since I promised you, I won't go back on my word. I'm only doing this for your sake, teacher. I won't do anything more for you!"

His expression changed drastically. Seeing his teacher's daughter doing such a thing, which violated medical ethics, he felt angry but unable to express it, and felt depressed.

“Brother Gu, you know that’s not what I meant. I just wanted to test Jiang Wanqing’s sincerity towards Battalion Commander Cheng. I’m not willing to lose to a country bumpkin who can’t do anything. Who in the whole military region doesn’t know that I like Battalion Commander Cheng? Now that he’s married to someone else, where do you expect me to put my face!”

Speaking of this, Qiao Xuemei sat down on the stool with a belly full of anger.

Her words not only failed to elicit sympathy from Dr. Gu, but also left her with the impression of being concerned with saving face and not caring about the lives of others.

He snorted, said nothing more, only saying, "You'd better watch yourself. I don't think Comrade Wanqing is what you say at all. Don't let it backfire. You should know that true feelings are revealed in times of adversity. What if Battalion Commander Cheng finds out it was you..."

"He won't know! As long as you don't tell."

Qiao Xuemei placed her hand on the table, pressing her palm firmly, and felt a tingling sensation for a moment.

"I don't know anything, and I've already helped you. Go do what you need to do. There are still many patients waiting for us to treat. Be less cunning and more virtuous. Don't ignore the words of great men, or you'll suffer later!"

"I understand, I'll go make my rounds now."

Qiao Xuemei rolled her eyes, still feeling that she was forced into it. If it weren't for Jiang Wanqing's appearance, she would always be a beloved doctor and would eventually marry Cheng Ran and become his wife...
