Chapter Twenty-One: Colluding with each other

Qiao Hongmei was followed by several of her sisters-in-law; it was unclear whether they were there to watch the spectacle or to cheer her on, but it didn't really matter.

During their first encounter, Jiang Wanqing didn't expect to get the help of a few women she had just met by saying a few nice words; she just wanted them to not cause any trouble.

Her gaze swept over Sister Wang behind Qiao Hongmei, and she blinked, looking extremely grateful.

"Sister-in-law Wang, your husband went to the hospital to see Cheng Ran the day before yesterday and brought a lot of things. I haven't had a chance to return the favor yet. I'm really sorry. I will definitely come to your door to express my gratitude when I have time another day."

Upon hearing this, Sister Wang wished she could lower her head to the ground, her face full of resentment. Her husband was concerned about his comrade-in-arms and went to the hospital to offer him comfort, while she was about to get involved in trouble again with Qiao Hongmei, that troublemaker. As a result, she lost her momentum before she even opened her mouth.

"No...no need."

"Thank you, Sister-in-law Wang. They say that behind every good man is a virtuous wife, and it seems that this is indeed true. You are so understanding."

Winning against others doesn't necessarily depend on verbal skills or who has fewer injuries. Sometimes, subtle tactics and flattery are the most deadly, especially for military dependents like them. Even if they have ulterior motives, they have to maintain a respectable appearance for the sake of their men's future. That's what Jiang Wanqing was betting on.

Similarly, she gestured to each of her other sisters-in-law.

“I’ve heard about all the concern you sisters have for Cheng Ran. It’s our blessing that you’re still thinking of him while he’s in the hospital.”

"Uh... that's to be expected..."

Jiang Wanqing always wore a smile, even when facing Qiao Hongmei, who clearly had ill intentions.

"Oh right, what did Comrade Hongmei say just now?" She tapped her forehead as if she had forgotten something. "Sorry, I haven't been resting well lately while taking care of Cheng Ran at the hospital, so my memory isn't very good. Could you say it again?"

"You're faking it again! I'll tear your mouth apart!"

“Hongmei… calm down, don’t be impulsive.” Sister-in-law Wang pulled her back.

"She's rotten to the core, why should I calm down! Sisters-in-law, say something! She's ruined the reputation of your military families, aren't you angry too? And... and it was all said by her own sister, how could it be false? What are you all afraid of her for!"

Sister? Jiang Wanqing probably already knows who Qiao Hongmei's sister is. She said that apart from that vicious woman Jiang Xiu, who else would have such malice towards her? It turns out that Qiao Xuemei is in cahoots with her.

Jiang Wanqing took two steps forward, leaned close to Qiao Hongmei's ear, and whispered something.

"Keep making a scene, don't stop. Idiots teaming up, I want to see what kind of splash they can make."

"you……"

You can't get entangled with this kind of person. Jiang Wanqing patted her shoulder, pretended nothing had happened, and calmly said goodbye.

"Goodbye, ladies. If you have any questions, you can ask me directly. I believe that people of your character would not believe or spread rumors."

She showed no sign of guilt or nervousness, as if the whole thing had nothing to do with her. As Sister-in-law Wang watched her leave, she had some doubts in her mind.

Such a woman is not only beautiful but also intelligent. Would she really be so foolish as to do the things that are rumored to be true?

She turned Qiao Hongmei's shoulders and said, "Tell me honestly, where did you hear about Comrade Wanqing's affair? We don't do things that deliberately ruin people's reputations!"

"Sister-in-law, do you believe her or me? I've already said that those things were said by her cousin herself. Even if they're false, how false could they be? My sister has already made an appointment with Jiang Wanqing's cousin. I believe they will definitely be able to expose this liar's true colors!"

Jiang Wanqing hadn't gone far, and since Qiao Hongmei's voice was quite loud, she overheard everything. What mischief were Qiao Xuemei and Jiang Xiu up to now? The rumors were just an appetizer; they were probably going to target her later. She had to be prepared.

Back inside, she packed Cheng Ran's change of clothes, sent a letter to Molly, and mailed it as soon as she left the house.

...

"Cheng Ran, the organization received a letter of complaint accusing your wife of indecent assault. What do you think about this..."

The superior made a special trip to Cheng Ran's ward, firstly to visit him, and secondly to discuss recent events. The moment he took out the letter, Cheng Ran immediately recognized whose handwriting it was.

"Sir, please take a look at this first."

He took out a medical record from the bedside drawer. It was handwritten by Qiao Xuemei when he was admitted to the hospital. Comparing the two sheets, although the handwriting had changed, the writing habits were exactly the same, even the addition of a dot after each sentence was unchanged.

"This is……"

"Dr. Qiao is using his position for personal revenge. Before things get serious, Wanqing and I don't want to ruin her career. Given my current state, we hope you can step in and resolve this, is that alright?"

"Hiss... So you and Comrade Wanqing have already discussed this?"

Cheng Ran nodded, giving the leader an affirmative answer.

"I heard that Qiao Xuemei had feelings for you, but I didn't expect her to do something like this out of love turned to hate. Don't worry, I will help you resolve this. I won't slander an innocent person and let a bad person go free. But let me tell you this first: they have produced witnesses. If you want to clear your name, you can't rely on force alone. You need to provide evidence."

"Thank you, sir. I understand."

"Take good rest. Once you've recovered, I, on behalf of the organization, welcome you back to lead your troops!"

"yes!"

The leader was busy with work and didn't stay long. He chatted for a while and then left. Just then, he ran into Jiang Wanqing, who had come to keep him company with some clothes.

The two had met once before at the hospital, and Jiang Wanqing greeted them politely.

"Greetings, Commander."

"Hello, Comrade Wanqing."

He was still holding the letter in his hand and hadn't had time to put it away. He was about to swap it with the letter in his pocket when he hurriedly stuffed it in, and it accidentally came out with him.

Jiang Wanqing kindly helped him pick it up: "You dropped something."

"It's alright, it's alright, give it to me."

She glanced at the letter and exclaimed in surprise, "This is a letter from your daughter! You two have such a good relationship!"

The other party paused for a second, then realized that thankfully it wasn't a complaint letter that fell out, but a letter from his daughter that he had just received and opened.

"Sigh, that girl learned a bit of English and even wrote me a letter in English, pretending I couldn't understand it. I wonder what she'll say about this old man in the letter, hahaha... I'm just about to take it to someone who understands English. If she doesn't learn properly, I'll have to teach her a lesson, hahaha..."

He laughed heartily, but there was no hint of blaming his daughter in his words, only love and pride, which Jiang Wanqing couldn't help but feel.

Since it's a letter that can be shown to others, it probably doesn't involve any secrets.

After hesitating, she suggested, "If you don't mind, I can help you take a look at what's written on it. After all, it's quite troublesome for you to take it back to the unit."
