Before long, it got dark in the mountains, and Huanren was a little worried about where to stay for the night.
Amei said, "My house can accommodate two men. I can talk to my relatives about the others and we can all squeeze in. Sister Wanqing can stay at my cousin's place."
"That's great, little sister. You've really helped us solve a lot of problems today. You're so smart, you're sure to have a bright future."
Huanren praised her so much that Amei became embarrassed, lowered her head, and smiled.
Jiang Wanqing was infected by her laughter and laughed along with her. Because they were government employees, the villagers were not very resistant, and the accommodation went smoothly.
Amei's cousin is also a simple girl. Knowing that Jiang Wanqing was going to stay overnight, she specially made the bed and brought new bedding.
Since she had caused trouble for others, Jiang Wanqing was glad that she had brought some food, so she shared it with her younger sister and cousin. The two girls were overjoyed and thanked her repeatedly.
"Sister, this thing called chocolate is so delicious and sweet. This is the first time I've ever eaten it in my life."
"If you like it, come find me in the county and I'll treat you to another meal."
"Great! I heard from my sister that you're going to set up a factory in the county. Can I work there?" My cousin asked, her eyes sparkling.
Jiang Wanqing replied, "Of course, you're most welcome."
Seeing that it was getting late, Amei patted her cousin on the shoulder.
"Please take care of Wanqing, I have to go back now."
"Okay, goodbye, sister."
After the two sisters said goodbye, the cousin pulled Jiang Wanqing to sit on the bed in the room and asked her many questions about the city, which she answered one by one.
They chatted until late at night, and when they ran out of things to talk about, Jiang Wanqing casually asked a question.
"I want to ask about A-mei's brother. What's wrong with him? She said he has a mental problem and needs help. Can the doctors in the county cure him?"
My cousin shook her head: "Sister Wanqing, you don't know, that's not actually my sister's biological brother. She and my uncle picked him up when they went up the mountain. He hit his head and damaged his brain, so he doesn't remember anything. Do you know why they didn't let you stay at her house, but instead sent two men there?"
Jiang Wanqing, of course, had no idea and looked completely bewildered.
"Why?"
"It's not that my sister doesn't want you to stay at her place, it's just that her brother is a weirdo with a strange habit."
"oh?"
Hearing this, Jiang Wanqing became interested and looked at her intently, hoping she would continue.
My cousin didn't disappoint her; she began to explain, with a touch of mystery in her tone.
"He doesn't allow any woman to get close to him. He'll go crazy and feel uncomfortable if she's within two meters. Even my cousin had to go through a lot of trouble to get close to him, and she couldn't even touch him, otherwise she would be thrown off."
"Is that so? Is he allergic to women?"
Jiang Wanqing had never heard of such a strange thing before, and that figure kept lingering in her mind.
"I don't know about that. Anyway, Wanqing, you should avoid him when you see him. I'm doing this for your own good."
"Okay, I understand, thanks for reminding me."
She agreed verbally, but her curiosity only grew stronger. What kind of person would have such a problem? Was he picked up from the mountain? What was his identity?
It seemed as if some magical force was driving Jiang Wanqing to understand. That night, she slept relatively well, but that figure would occasionally float into her mind...
The next day, after Jiang Wanqing and Huan Ren finished learning about the last few households, they were about to leave the mountain. Before leaving, she went to Amei's house.
No one was home; they must have gone out to work. She had no choice but to return empty-handed.
Looking up from the village, she didn't see the figure she was looking for, and she was somewhat disappointed.
"Wanqing? What's wrong?" Huanren waved his hand in front of her eyes.
She snapped out of her reverie, forced a smile, and said, "It's nothing, I just wanted to say goodbye to my sister."
"It's alright, I've already told her that her family went hunting in the mountains this morning, so you won't see her."
"Oh, that's a bit of a shame."
As the group walked towards the village entrance, Jiang Wanqing suddenly asked Huanren a question.
"You stayed at A-mei's house yesterday, did you see her brother?"
This question made Huanren suddenly stop in his tracks. His eyes flickered, he swallowed hard, and his hand unconsciously tightened, but he quickly returned to normal.
"Ah, I did see him, but I didn't get a good look at him. My sister said her brother has a strange habit of not being able to see strangers."
This was exactly what her cousin, Amei, had said, and she nodded.
"Oh, okay, I understand."
"Wanqing, what are you thinking about?"
"It's nothing, let's go."
Perhaps she really was obsessed. How could Cheng Ran be in this small mountain village? If it really was him, how could Huan Ren not recognize him? That doesn't make sense.
The group set off down the mountain. As the village was about to disappear from sight, Jiang Wanqing looked back. That figure was still in the same spot as yesterday, looking down from a high place...
But her vision was blurry, and she could no longer see that face clearly, so she missed it.
"Brother, you're here! Come quickly, Dad and I are waiting for you."
On the mountain, A-mei shouted to A-ye at the top of her lungs, and he followed her.
Who were the people who stayed at our house yesterday?
He and A-mei were about two steps apart.
“They’re government officials who came to the village to inspect things. They’ll be setting up a factory and need to hire people. I told Dad I’ll work there during the off-season to earn money for the family. Don’t worry, brother, I can support you and Dad.”
Amei looked at Aye with her bright eyes and tried to reach out to touch him, but he immediately dodged away and frowned.
She awkwardly withdrew her hand: "Brother, you still won't let me touch you?"
"I'm sorry, I don't like being touched."
Although he has amnesia, he is very resistant to physical contact with others, to the point that he will avoid even a mouse that walks by.
Amei sniffed: "When I earn money, I'll take you to the city to see a doctor, and they'll definitely be able to cure you."
Aye remained noncommittal. He didn't know if he was sick; he had his own judgment. Sometimes fragmented memories would flash through his mind, unclear, but he was certain he didn't belong here…
On the mountain, down the mountain, two different worlds. After taking a car back to the county, Jiang Wanqing immediately went back to the guesthouse and took a good shower.
I was thinking of taking a good rest for a day, but every time I closed my eyes, that figure was still there...
She couldn't take it anymore, so the next day she immediately and urgently discussed the factory site selection with Huanren. Only when she was busy did her mind become much clearer.
For some reason, Huanren hasn't dared to look her in the eye these past two days. It's not shyness or fear, but rather a kind of... inexplicable tension, or perhaps guilt.
It was strange that he was like this after coming down from the mountains. She couldn't get any explanation from him, so she could only let him be.
Besides that, a voice in Jiang Wanqing's head kept telling her to find some time to go to the mountains again, she absolutely had to go...
