Chapter Fifty-Four: Imprisonment

Jiang Wanqing believed that Qiao Xuemei's sudden repentance was not just a change of heart, but that she finally saw the problem clearly when someone stronger than her appeared.

She considered herself better than Jiang Wanqing, and Cheng Ran's rejection of her made her feel frustrated. However, Guo Xueyun's appearance told her that it wasn't like that. If you don't like someone, you don't like them. Continuing to make trouble wouldn't get you anything, and it would only affect your own vested interests, so she stopped.

As she left, Jiang Wanqing glanced back at her, but she turned away coldly and walked away.

When they arrived at the police station, Jiang Xiu was still trying to deny it. She claimed that there were no surveillance cameras in this era and that she couldn't find anyone on the street to testify. She insisted that she had not intentionally killed anyone.

"Why do you say I pushed her! What if she tried to push me but almost got hit herself?"

The police were stunned by her remarks, and it was not easy to convict her.

"Comrade Cheng, Comrade Jiang, look at this... why don't you look for more evidence? As long as someone saw her push you, we'll immediately start the process."

For the first time since her rebirth, Jiang Wanqing felt stifled. In the race of shamelessness, Jiang Xiu still had the upper hand!

Just as she was about to step forward, Cheng Ran grasped her hand and shook his head slightly.

"Wait a minute."

"Waiting for whom?"

Seeing their reactions, Jiang Xiu became even more confident, and even dared to cross her legs in a provocative manner when facing the police.

"Stop making things complicated. We're relatives after all. I'm leaving now, so let's not make things difficult for each other."

As she spoke, she stood up and started to walk out, as if she was certain that Jiang Wanqing couldn't do anything to her. But before she could take a step, the police immediately forced her to sit down.

"Where are you going? Who said you could leave!"

"you……"

Jiang Wanqing glanced at her. In her previous life, she didn't engage in internal strife; she only knew how to bully others. After being reborn, she was even more so, which was simply unbelievable.

"Battalion Commander, Sister-in-law, I've brought the person."

Hong Xing came running over, panting, with several people behind him, men and women. They were all furious when they saw Jiang Xiu and pointed at her.

"That's her! She's been stealing everywhere! We've caught her several times, and if she hadn't run away so fast, we would have handed her over to the police long ago!"

"Who are these people...?" Jiang Wanqing asked Hong Xing in confusion.

Cheng Ran nodded to him, and after receiving permission, he patiently explained to Jiang Wanqing.

"It's like this, sister-in-law. Jiang Xiu has been stealing vegetables from other people's fields lately. Someone noticed that she looks a lot like someone from the news and newspapers, so they contacted us."

Such a thing actually happened. No wonder Cheng Ran told her to wait. Although she might not be convicted of premeditated murder, the evidence of theft was conclusive, and she couldn't escape.

"Who are you? I don't know you at all!" Jiang Xiu, still trying to argue despite her unreasonable behavior, suppressed the guilt in her eyes and retorted, "Go find whoever stole your things, don't try to smear me. It must be you who conspired with them to harm me!"

She was quick-witted and immediately connected these people with Jiang Wanqing and Cheng Ran, turning the tables on them without hesitation.

"Officers, they've openly joined forces to slander me, aren't you going to do anything about it?!"

She pouted and tried to grab the arm of the nearest policeman, but he pulled away forcefully.

"Whether it's slander or not, we'll find out soon enough. Hmph, we won't let any criminal get away with it!"

The policeman's eyes carry an intimidating presence due to his profession, rendering Jiang Xiu's scheming useless here.

"Explain the situation clearly, and if you have any evidence, present it. I believe the police will give you justice."

Hung Hing turned around and said to the men he had brought with him.

With so many people talking, everyone chimed in with their own opinions. Some said Jiang Xiu stole their vegetables, others said their pots and pans were missing, and still others said she tricked their children out of their ornaments...

“I have evidence!” A middle-aged woman pushed past her companions and stood up.

"Tell me, what evidence?"

"My son has been in poor health since he was a child. We found a traditional Chinese medicine doctor who made a house and had small sachets made together with a peace charm. The scent is very special. It lingers for days after you hold it. You can smell it on her if you don't believe me!"

Upon hearing the sound, Jiang Xiu raised her arm and sniffed it before anyone else could get closer. Damn it, it really did smell like medicine!

Seeing her action, the police knew perfectly well that if she hadn't stolen it, her first reaction would never have been to smell it.

"Officer, we saw her stealing our vegetables with our own eyes, doesn't that count?"

The vegetables weren't worth much, but we couldn't let a thief like Jiang Xiu get away with it. Everyone quickly added, afraid that she wouldn't get her comeuppance.

"It all stands. We understand what you've said and will handle it according to the law. Jiang Xiu, is there anything else you want to say?" *Thud*, her hand went into her pocket. The police pulled her up, and a pendant fell out. The middle-aged woman immediately picked it up.

"Yes, this is it, it belongs to my son! See, I told you she stole it, thieves must go to jail!"

"That's right, he must go to jail!"

Jiang Xiu, who had previously been shouting that there was no evidence to prove her crime, now felt weak in the knees and never expected to be defeated in such a way.

Caught red-handed, it would be difficult for her to escape punishment. When the police were about to handcuff her, she knelt down before Jiang Wanqing with a thud.

"I know I was wrong, please save me, I beg you, I can't go to jail anymore..."

"You reap what you sow; go inside and reflect on your actions."

To put it nicely, this kind of person is flexible and adaptable; to put it bluntly, they have a thicker skin than a city wall. She doesn't know she was wrong; she regrets not being more discreet and giving others leverage over her.

"Jiang Wanqing! You'll regret it if you don't save me! Do you think I'm the one who doesn't want you to have a good time? There are plenty of people who don't want you to have a good time either. This is your fate, hahahaha..."

"Let's go."

Seeing Jiang Xiu's frantic state, Cheng Ran was afraid that Jiang Wanqing would be frightened, so he put his arm around her shoulder, turned her around, and led her outside.

He left Hung Hing behind to handle the remaining matters.

The speed at which the matter was handled exceeded Jiang Wanqing's expectations, and if nothing unexpected happens, Jiang Xiu will face a second prison sentence.

The two returned to the family compound and met Guo Xuefu, who had been waiting for them, at the entrance.

"You're back!" She rushed over, gripping her bag strap tightly. "I heard Comrade Wanqing almost had an accident. What happened?"

She looked Jiang Wanqing up and down, clearly not worried about her safety, but her eyes were full of regret that she had returned safely.

She gritted her teeth. Although she hadn't expected that idiot Jiang Xiu would come up with such a stupid idea, it would have been fine if it had succeeded. But the fact that it failed and Cheng Ran's leg was restored in order to save Jiang Wanqing was nothing short of a miracle!

"The culprit has been arrested by the police. If you want to know what happened, ask her. This shouldn't be the first time you've met."

Cheng Ran abandoned all pretense of politeness, speaking to her without any restraint, and protecting Jiang Wanqing with one hand, making the difference between estrangement and intimacy immediately apparent.
