Chapter 239 Conversation between Father and Son

Li Yuanjing breathed a sigh of relief.

It was late spring, the lanterns in the palace were lit up one by one, and the night was dim. After Li Yuanjing dealt with the last batch of memorials, he headed towards Yongning Palace in the night.

As the emperor's sedan passed through the imperial garden, Li Yuanjing saw Li Chengtai and the old nanny from the Cining Palace. The palace lanterns were bright, and Li Chengtai had a stern face, as if he was sulking.

"Your son greets the emperor." Li Chengtai greeted politely.

The sedan chair was put down.

Li Yuanjing walked up to his son and asked, "Where did you go when it got dark?"

Li Chengtai pursed his lips and said sullenly, "I just went to Yongning Palace to visit my mother."

There was dissatisfaction towards his father in his tone.

At night, bunches of crabapples bloomed luxuriantly in the imperial garden. Li Yuanjing raised the corners of his lips and said in a low voice: "Walk with father."

Li Chengtai nodded silently.

The palace maids followed far behind, keeping a distance from the emperor and his son. The wind was rustling in the night, and Li Chengtai followed his father with a small silk palace lantern in his hand.

Li Yuanjing stopped under a crabapple tree with lush flowers.

Li Chengtai, who was standing behind him, had his head down the whole time and didn't notice that his father had stopped. His little head bumped into his father with a bang and he almost dropped the lantern in his hand.

Li Chengtai covered his head with his hands, his eyes dim.

Li Yuanjing smiled and asked, "Are you angry with your father?"

Li Chengtai clenched the palace lantern in his hand, raised his little head, looked at the man who was taller than him, and mustered up the courage to speak:

"Father, if you didn't like Mother...you shouldn't have brought us back to the palace in the first place."
