First time on campus

First time on campus

The gate of A University was more imposing than I'd imagined. Beside the carved iron gate stood a stele bearing the school motto, the words "Diligence in Learning and Practice" gleaming brightly in the autumn rain. Chen Yu stood at the gate, dragging his suitcase, feeling a bit dazed. Just a few months ago, he'd been anxious about the college entrance exam, and now he was actually standing here.

"What are you daydreaming about?" Jiang Yizhou gave him a push and walked towards the campus as if he knew the way. "My dad asked someone and they found out that the registration office for new students is in the gymnasium."

Shen Yu followed him, his eyes swept across the sign on the roadside, and suddenly smiled: "You seem to know it better than me."

"That's right," Jiang Yizhou turned around and raised his chin at him, "I came here three days in advance to check the time. I even knew which window in the cafeteria had the best braised pork."

The registration area was crowded with people. Shen Yu was filling out a form when a familiar voice came to his ears: "Shen Yu?"

When I looked up, it was my high school friend Lin Xi. She was holding a pile of books, her eyes wide with surprise. "You're here too? What a coincidence!"

Jiang Yizhou immediately came over, put his arm on Shen Yu's shoulder, and asked half-jokingly, "Who is this?"

"My friend, Lin Xi." After Chen Yu introduced, he looked at Lin Xi and said, "This is Jiang Yizhou."

Lin Xi smiled and waved her hand: "I've heard of your name for a long time. Chen Yu always mentioned you when we were in high school."

Jiang Yizhou's eyes lit up, and he secretly nudged Chen Yu with his elbow. The smug look on his face made Chen Yu's ears burn.

After finishing the paperwork and walking towards the dormitory, someone called Jiang Yizhou's name as he passed the basketball court. Several boys in jerseys waved at him: "New here? Want to play a game?"

Jiang Yizhou's eyes lit up instantly, and he stuffed the suitcase into Chen Yu's hand: "Wait for me for ten minutes!" Then he took off his coat and ran to the court, dribbling, jumping, and shooting. His movements were neat and crisp, which attracted cheers from the sidelines.

Chen Yu stood in the shade of a tree, watching, when suddenly someone patted him on the back. Turning around, he saw a senior student wearing glasses, who handed him a campus newspaper. "Are you a freshman? Here's a guide to course selection and a list of clubs to recruit new members."

"Thank you, senior." Chen Yu took the newspaper and just opened it when he heard cheers from the stadium - Jiang Yizhou made a three-pointer and was making a victory sign to him. The sunlight fell on the ends of his sweaty hair, so dazzling that people couldn't take their eyes off it.

The senior followed his gaze and said with a smile, "Isn't that Jiang Yizhou from your department? I heard he was on the school team in high school. No wonder he's so good."

Chen Yu lowered his head to look at the newspaper, his lips curling up. In the newspaper's list of clubs, he circled "Astronomy Club"—Jiang Yizhou had said he wanted to watch the stars with him. And on Jiang Yizhou's course selection list, Chen Yu had already checked off several of his courses that overlapped with his own.

The autumn wind whirled fallen leaves past my feet, carrying the scent of the new campus. Chen Yu clenched the newspaper in his hand, and suddenly felt that the days ahead would be like the scene before him: bright and lively, with countless small joys hidden in them.

Jiang Yizhou ran back after playing basketball, his forehead covered in sweat, but his face was full of excitement: "Those guys just now are from the school team, and they asked me to go for a tryout!"

"I understand." Chen Yu took out a tissue to wipe his sweat, "Let's go to the dormitory and put your things down first."

"Hey wait," Jiang Yizhou grabbed his wrist and pointed at the bulletin board not far away. "Look! The Astronomy Club is having an observation activity tonight. Do you want to go?"

Chen Yu looked in the direction he pointed. A poster on the bulletin board depicted a brilliant starry sky. He nodded, "Go."

The two suitcases left parallel tracks on the ground, like two lines that would never fork, continuing to extend forward in the new campus.
